Through unfortunate events I was spoiled pretty heavily regarding SkyClan's current status and why they had fled the gorge in the first place. Ah well.
So I present the question to you. In your opinion, what would have happened to SkyClan should they had not returned back to the lake and instead traversed back to the gorge?
My personal take: They would have lost more members before making it back, certainly. Morale would remain at its lowest point for countless moons. The gorge, while a place they could live, would no longer have been their home - it would have been nothing more than a graveyard looming above their heads and below their paws. Even if Leafstar had made necessary changes - heavily restricting bringing in outsiders, if not outlawing the practice completely, increasing battle training and perhaps an attempt to develop more skills, and keep the Clan more hidden, like the ghosts that they metaphorically are, I could not see SkyClan surviving more than a couple years, perhaps even less than half a year. Like leaves dropping from a tree in leaf-fall, the last remaining original SkyClan cats would have disbanded one by one, not by their leader's order but through their own personal choice. Perhaps Leafstar and a few others closest to her would have been the final cats to stay behind, but in seasons passing, the gorge would have once again become a hollow, empty place.

So, like history sort of repeating itself (in terms of SkyClan disbanding once again)?
I personally don't like this sentiment because it would have undone all of the work and hope Firestar, Sandstorm and the modern SkyClan cats put into reviving this Clan. Not to mention the pain it would've caused their ancestors (poor Cloudstar would most likely loose his mate Birdflight all over again regarding StarClan access to SkyClan's eternal hunting grounds).
Perhaps if they had returned at a later time after being treated unfairly by the other Clans (or rather a specific one with a specific leader which I'm trying not to spoil for you, OP, but can't promise the same for other posters on this thread), they would have been just fine. Their daylight warriors could return, new cats could potentially be recruited and so on. But then again, this happening would mean that an entire arc would have to be rewritten (TBC) or rather a new protagonist from a different Clan would have to be found to take that cat's place.

SkyClan would likely have thrived and continued their solitary traditions at the gorge where they belong. They may have lost a few cats on the way back but having Alderheart or someone to guide them swiftly to their old territory would be good. (Especially since the journey in TAQ was very fast when I expected that journey to take several books but nope.) SkyClan would have its Daylight warriors again and would likely be distrustful of large groups of loners and rogues that they were not already acquainted with. (Stick’s group.)
It’s possible they could also get Parsleyseed and Curlypaw back as well as they’d be returning to a home they recognized, so that would also be a plus.
Despite StarClan’s opinion, SkyClan did/does well at the gorge, they have a unique connection to StarClan with the silver moss which their Ancestors lacked, and they’d have a mediator role they picked up from the Lake, which would be helpful in any disputes between Daylight and regular warriors. SkyClan does not need the other Clans and with them gone, the lake territory map can make sense again.
