I thought it was really good that Erin Hunter had Squirrelflight kill Ashfur! Why did she chicken out in Sunrise and say Hollyleaf did it instead?
I've started reading Leona Stella the books other than Leopardstar's Honor, and we're on Power of Three now! That's why I remembered this.

They didn't 'chicken out', Squirrelflight was just a red herring.

It’s not really in Squilf nature tbh. I don’t think she’s the type of cat to kill another outside of battle self defense. Plus, it adds to Hollyleaf’s downward spiral.

As already said so, they didn't "chicken out" of making Squirrelflight be Ashfur's killer. She was just used as a red herring in this instance in order to keep people (and cats) guessing/lead them on a false trail/to a false conclusion so the suspense was kept up before the true "culprit" (whodunit lol) finally got revealed to actually have been Hollyleaf all along.
And I mean, they also suspected Sol of having done it for quite some time in Sunrise as well (which is just so funny based on Sol's actual "fighting skills") and even went on a whole patrol (which the actual killer was on) to "drag" him back from where he had gone to next after the Eclipse business.

imo it's more interesting with Hollyleaf being the killer.
