i'm writing this at 12 am, if anything seems poorly worded i'll fix it as soon as i wake up. thread will contain spoilers for the book sky. two days ago, a user obtained sky and was generous enough to share summaries of the chapters with the forum. as i was reading, a line in one of the early chapters caught my attention. it states the following: "Nightheart thinks that all Jayfeather can do is mix herbs." post link for full contextseveral users voiced their dislike for nightheart afterwards; some even pointed out his comment was ableist. i agreed with these opinions at first. however, warriors youtuber hawkzz, posted this tweetto clear up the misinformation about nightheart being ableist. whether unintentional or not adding your biases towards characters and providing minimal context during interactions is going to give someone a wildly different idea of what really happens in the book; i would argue that in a way, this spreads misinformation. your opinions should always come after you summarize the book for those who plan on making spoiler threads for future books, please keep this in mind. i have seen biased spoilers countless times in these forums, and i'd like it to improve

I completely agree. OP of the thread said “Nightheart snarls that all Jayfeather can do is mix herbs considering he can’t see.” And after seeing the extract for myself that just straight up doesn’t happen? It gave me the completely wrong idea about that scene and Nightheart. And for people who aren’t going to read the book based on those summaries that is pretty damaging since that’s the impression of the scene they’re going to have. Makes me wonder what else doesn’t quite take place as summarised. Adding onto this, I remember in the River summary Squirrelflight was made out to be so much worse than she was in the book as well.

Spoiler threads used to be just the person posting bullet lists of important things that happened in the book and I do miss that. I'm grateful to OP for putting so much effort into their posts and I know a lot of people like the long detailed posts but for me I don't have the attention span time or patience to read it all.
The long detailed posts do offer room for bias and misinterpretation of a scene, not to mention it feels almost like a rewrite to the point that I personally don't feel it's worth reading the book after, because I basically already read it in abridged form but now I have a skewed perception of the characters based on things that didn't actually happen or happened in a different way than described. But also I'm not going to tell anyone what to do or how to do things.
I think my biggest gripe is why are bookstores putting books on the shelf almost a month before its supposed to release.... it's actually really annoying.

there will always be bias when recounting events. thats just how it is. thats why people dont like it when i say i rely on wiki pages for things. but i rely on spoiler threads and wiki summaries bc if i dont like what is happening, i wont read the book myself. and i've been fine doing this for a while now.

I mean, reviews or recounting events usually carry the bias of the person who is writing about it. Most Warriors readers are not professional critics after all (except for the ones who are and get featured as such when the book is introduced/promoted to fans or to reach an audience). Actual reviews are often supposed to be from a neutral viewpoint and free of biases in regards to characters and the like but these spoiler threads on here are from fans for fans, after all. Well see how this situation is resolved since the OP of the Sky spoiler thread has not had the chance to respond yet and was also already asked to do so on the thread in question. Sky Spoilers: As for Nightheart himself, a lot of people in the fandom already dislike him and anything he says and does so I'm glad to know he did not actually say anything ableist to Jayfeather (Hawkkz would not lie about it so Hollyfall might have read it wrong or whatnot, we'll see). I still like Nightheart, even though I'm not in agreement with his behaviour at the moment, because I've got an understanding of his angry outbursts on a personal level (was a teenager who felt misunderstood/had anger issues and lashed out sometimes unfairly as well). He is probably an unpopular cat to like right now in the overall fandom but I am convinced he'll grow out of it and change his attitude eventually. Edit: I just saw that Hollyfall has made a comment about it on the spoiler thread (page 14 somewhere near the bottom). Turns out they misread that part and Nightheart can once again be considered many things but is neither ableist nor misogynistic.

Bias has and always will exist. We can only hope that people are more mindful when they post spoilers and people might interpret things in ways that always differ.

hollyfall already clarified in their own thread that they were actually the ones to clear up the mistake and they were the ones who told Hawkzz directly about it (and provided the picture of the scene).
they apologized and explained they skimmed some scenes more than others because they found the book a slog. it’s just an accident.

While I agree, sometimes it is hard to not be biased. If Bramblestar was a POV and I was summarizing, I would have a hard time not judging him for mistakes. It happens. Instead of asking the person spoiling to be strictly neutral, as they're being kind to give spoilers, we should go into the thread with the mindset of "this could be biased."
Even in debate, people will point out things that make their favorites look good or hated look bad until confronted with opposing events of the story.
As Saint said, Hollyfall apologized and clarified. Nightheart can be a bit of a hard read for some people so I get why it would be easier to skim.

Like others have said, bias exists.
This is why it's best if people read the book themselves and take spoiler threads with a grain of salt.

I couldn't agree more. Summaries are supposed to.. well, summarize the material without bias, straight how it is. Even if there is bias, you should at the very least state that what you just wrote is your own opinion and specify it didn't happen in the original material
