So I asked James if he knew why it wasn't brought up at all and here's what he said.

How on earth does the Eclipse battle not have relevance to Onestar’s emotional journey? The only way that works is if you assume his emotional journey is all about his stuff with Darktail and has nothing to do with his turning against Firestar and ThunderClan.

Not relevant??? Onestar started the bloody battle! Over nothing!! In my eyes that was the moment he changed from insecure to evil. It was a pivotal moment for Onestar's relationship with Firestar and for the Clans collectively. We still do not know what his motivations were, or how he got RiverClan to ally with him, or what he hoped to achieve by winning the battle. This wasn't an insignificant skirmish editors!!

This reads like a generic response they're probably told to write to respond to questions like these. The eclipse battle was important to the fall of Firestar and Onestar's friendship that the book drew attention to.

I agree with what's being said above. I don't know how the Eclipse battle isn't relevant to Onestar's story.

Maybe I'm missing something here but why was James asked this? He isn't a writer, he just draws the manga. So I don't really think he's the person to ask when it comes to something like this. Either way I do agree with what's being said above. I don't know how the Eclipse battle isn't relevant to Onestar's story. the James she emailed is James Noble, the managing editor from Working Partners

Thank you for the clarification. It really does make the answer even more ridiculous then.

I suspect this is what led to the persistent Redtail error. The books repeat the line he was killed by the rockslide multiple times before we finally learn the truth. And when we do learn the truth, it's a little one off scene that is never talked about again. If you're just skimming the series, especially when you're not familiar with it, I could see how someone could miss that bit of critical information.

*beats head into ground* They rehashed some scenes from CT word for word yet we can't get a rehash of this critically important event to Onestar's character? Aaarrrhhhgg.

Am I the only one who doesn't mind that they skipped it? In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really impact Onestar's 'relationships' with Smoke and Darktail which is what the book is supposed to be about.

But that's just the thing, they are giving short shrift to the most interesting parts of this character in what they choose to focus on. And it's a 500-ish page book, it would be completely possible to fit in two emotional conflicts at once without cutting the most dramatic points for one of them (the Darktail and Smoke stuff + the stuff about Firestar and his insecurity in leadership).

Regarding the whole "don't read older books" it'd at least be mitigated by having a series bible, which I don't think they have
not speaking for anyone else but to me its less about the battle in particular and more what it implies about behind the scenes.

To add onto this, the entirety of the Mudclaw conflict was covered in a single chapter, so there wasn't any reason for why they couldn't have the something similar with the battle. It wasn't just about Smoke and Darktail[/em]. Even just mentioning it would've been find by me personally. Because when you think about it, OC really is just one big flashback, framing device and everything. If we think about this from an in-universe perspective, Onestar had either blocked the event from his mind or he (like the Erin Team, apparently) just didn't consider it to be that significant enough to reflect on.
