So, while I driving home, apparently some sh*squeak* went down over the LGBTQ+ community. First of all. Forums, we've been over this. I thought we were past the homophobia.
Second of all, I have a test for Sociology of Families on next Wednesday. One of the sections the course will go further into as the semester progresses is the role of gay marriages and how it has changed and evolved over the centuries.
So, I wish to give an analysis of gay marriage through a sociological perspective, and why many take an opposing stance on it.
First off, gay marriage is, of course, a fairly new basic right given to homosexual men and women. It is the bond on two same sex couples in a marriage that is based off of companionship and how they make each other feel. This in itself is also a fairly new idea, as traditionally, marriages started out as an economic investment. Arranged marriages could provide the daughter's family with benefits from the husband's family. However, over time, this practice has declined in first world countries, and now marriage is primarily based on personal choice. This does not apply to every culture, though.
Many major religions as well as religious sects have had a strong opposition to gay marriage. They state it is written in their sacred books and teachings that it is a sin, and that marriage is be a sacred bond between a man and woman only.
For example, there is the Bible. Many often forget that every passage on gay marriage as a sin was written in the Old Testament, which is an account of historical events, and old laws, some of which are now obsolete. One must also understand that back in what can be considered the Biblical Era, that lifespans were short. The average person lived up to 30 years of age before dying. Children were married off at the ages of 12 and even younger, and gave birth around these ages. This is because there were many health problems, that, humans are today do not have to deal with. These people were together out of necessity, not romance. Any romantic feelings came later. The idea that gay marriage is a sin stems from the fact that two male or female partners cannot procreate and carry on their DNA to a sire a new generation. Hundreds of years ago, this would be a liability, as they were needed to carry on the farms and families, as well as the fact they died so early.

So, why is that pointless now?
Our average lifespan is currently in 60s, and maybe higher. Most first world citizens have access to health care to cure ailments that would killed them had they been born in a earlier century. Marriage is no longer an arrangement, but an emotional choice to unify one's love for each other. And, children are now an economic liability due to all the expenses needed to care for them. In this day and age, we have the luxury to have these things and basic rights. Our population is stable and is predicted to stay that way for a while.
In the end, it is no different than heterogamy. Both heterogamy and homorogamy marry for love. So, there is no drawback for gay people to marry. People who oppose it oppose it due to what they have been taught, which has been indoctrinated into them.
