I just finished the last book and my cheeks are dry from the tears that have fallen from my eyes. This book had the best ending out of all of the series in my opinion, but it was so bittersweet. While the Power of Three ending was bleak, this one managed to crush my heart. I think this arc has become my favorite.
This series had the highest stakes. I liked all of the protagonists. While it took me longer to start liking Shadowsight, I found that I related to him most in the end. I remember when everybody thought he was going to be a Gary Stu, but oh, how wrong everyone was. Yes, he was special, but the thing that made him special turned out to be what almost tore the Clans apart. I liked how he can no longer contact StarClan and how he was a medicine cat with a connection to the Dark Forest instead. His destiny revolved around Ashfur. Their dynamic was one I loved reading about. I can relate to missing an abuser, however, I really liked his last scene in the book, where the medicine cats comfort him and he no longer feels like an outsider. He was my least favorite protagonist in the beginning of the series, but now? I think he's become my favorite.
Bristlefrost would've been a great leader. Her sacrifice made me teary-eyed. Only two other deaths made me tear up in the series: Bluestar and Gray Wing, but at least they got to end up in StarClan. It's a comfort to know Bristlefrost wasn't scared when she died and I think it's so powerful about how she only felt love. Ivypool and Fernsong raised her well.
I did not not like the lack of build up towards Bristlefrost's feelings about Rootspring, but in the end, I cared for their relationship. They were mature about it, and the fact that Rootspring would have left his Clan for her speaks volumes. I liked how Rootspring grew as a character.
The heavy focus on familial relationships was EVERYTHING in this arc. Tigerstar and Dovewing were good parents. Ivypool and Fernsong were good parents. Tree and Violetshine were good parents. I loved watching Rootspring's relationship with his father grow. I loved how Tigerstar supported his son so much. Also, I liked Tigerstar as a supporting character in this arc. Yes, he took the exiles in, but it's still clear he is not the kindest cat and was not afraid to voice his opinions. The sibling relationships were good as well and a nice read.
Mad that I didn't see Hollyleaf Happy, though, to see Firestar. It was like seeing an old friend again. His interactions with Graystripe were nice. I started tearing up and laughing when Graystripe said: "You always did talk like a soppy old kitty pet".
If the conversations about changing the code did not happen, I feel like this would have been a good conclusive arc for the entirety of Warriors.
Anyways, I am reading River currently. Cannot wait to let my thoughts out about that one.
