so. i just finished alim.
and actually, it was pretty good! compared to other ending books, such as the last hope or the raging storm, i'd say it's a fairly decent end to the whole broken code saga. would i have liked to see more? yes. but do i hate the book? no. right now i'd say it sits around the top, below the silent thaw and place of no stars (i still need to think about my ranking lol)
what i liked:
- ngl seeing the df cats was pretty damn cool. also liked the little background exposition of silverhaw explaining how he got into the df. dk if that was necessary but it was nice. i also liked how bristlefrost was able to convince them to side with her and the clans by appealing to their selfishness, and also the little bit of tension when ashfur appeared. i wished we got to know more about sparrowfeather and maggottail and the like, but the book isn't about them so i understand.
- i have my issues with firestar appearing but watching him beat the crap out of darkstripe and then killing him was amazing. also how darkstripe was just. scared upon seeing that it was FIRESTAR. love it.
- OKAY BUT GRAYSTRIPE'S DEATH THOUGH he lived a good long life and i'm glad he got a great sendoff. bittersweet ending.
- personally i wish squirrelflight got to kill ashfur but i'm not mad with having bristlefrost kill him. if it wasn't gonna be squirrel it was gonna be one of our three protagonists.
- i'm so glad they thought about revising the warrior code AND THE ONE ABT THE LEADER'S WORD BEING LAW. they got it! they got that a leader can manipulate the warrior code to fit their goals and do bad things under the guise of doing it for starclan or the clans or w/e, and how ashfur literally proved that. so glad leafpool (i think) brought up that the warrior code should be a living document of sorts, because the clans change, and they can't stick to something made years and years and years ago. also yes stop fighting over borders thank you.
- i love how every single cat is just calling ashfur out on his bs because he deserves it. like graystripe delivering that speech from squirrelflight. flawless. also love how the cats are calling starclan out for letting ashfur in at all. thank you <3
what i didn't like:
- hmm i'm not sure how to feel about bristlefrost permanently dying. right now it's actually more of a neutral for me but i still haven't come to terms with it. i think it's just a shock bc we've never really had a cat we cared about die permanently except for spottedleaf maybe.
- firestar is probably one of the only starclan cats that could have confronted darkstripe like that but did we really have to bring him back? love him but . . . let him rest.
- i get they're wary of the df but. hm that scene where the clans were debating over whether to help save the df and starclan was kinda something.
- maybe it was bc i kinda sped through the battle section but it seemed short? don't get me wrong i don't think it should have taken up more than a chapter or two but hm. then again please take this criticism with a grain of salt bc i was kinda speeding through.
- i'm really not sure why shadowsight is blocked from communicating with starclan forever? like ik they explained that it was bc he could only see shadows and idm cats not being able to share but the reasoning seems very. hm. again take this with a grain of salt bc i'm just confused with this one.
overall:
this book was nice! it was a decent end, like i said, and i quite enjoyed it. while i can't exactly place it on a ranking, i wouldn't say it's the worse. i have some gripes but they don't outweigh what i see as positives. it's not exactly the first battle, the darkest hour, or hawkwing's journey, but it's still pretty good! as for the whole arc, it's an improvement over avos, and i like it.
i hope you enjoyed this review lol.
