A Nameless Fear is a semi-advanced small group roleplay, set in a fictional area in the Canadian wilderness and inspired by the video game The Long Dark. A deadly and highly contagious virus has wiped out the majority of the human population, taking its numbers down from billions to a mere few thousand spread across the world. Modern amenities such as electricity and running water are no longer available and supplies are hard to come by in this rural area. Nature rules the Earth yet again; the remaining survivors are at its mercy, depending on it for everything they need to live and yet also fighting against it. They still live in fear of the virus, which is always waiting for a chance to take another life, and surviving each day is a struggle against the elements.

Rules - - Failure to follow both these rules and the official WCRP forum rules may lead to you being removed from the roleplay and/or reported to the forum staff. Hopefully it will never come to that, but both sets of rules are here for a reason and everyone involved in this roleplay is expected to follow them.
Post Quality - - Keep in mind that this is a semi-advanced roleplay. This means posts should ideally range between 2-5 paragraphs with reasonable grammar and spelling. Longer posts are fine if you're up to writing them, but your partners shouldn't be expected to match that length if they can't or don't want to write that much. Short posts are allowed on occasion; everyone ends up busy or out of muse at some point or another and it's perfectly understandable. As long as the majority of your posts meet these expectations, it's not a big deal. Typos and errors are fine too, so long as you at least make an effort and your posts are understandable.
Chatting - - Talking to each other here is both allowed and encouraged. This is a very small group, so we may as well get to know each other. As long as you keep any out-of-character comments clearly separated from in-character text, it's no problem. Non-members are also welcome to stop by and chat or ask for someone to return to another thread, so long as they're not disruptive and follow the official rules.
Activity - - This is one of the most important rules. We all have other things to do, some of which should come before roleplaying. However, you should be writing at least two roleplay posts per week here. If you know you probably won't have much time, let us know and your absence will be excused. If you simply lose interest or want to leave the group for whatever reason, please be courteous and just tell us. It would be preferable if you could write another few posts to work your character out of the story smoothly, but if not that's fine. Basically, try to post twice a week in-character and don't disappear without saying anything.
Respect - - This is probably the strictest rule in this list. Do not be disrespectful or discriminating to anyone on this thread no matter what the situation is. If you can't avoid fighting, take it somewhere else. In addition, discrimination against a specific group of people - for example, racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia - are not tolerated on this thread. Some of us have been affected by these things personally, so while respecting others is important in any situation, this is taken especially seriously here. I will not hesitate to report hurtful posts and/or remove someone from the roleplay if this becomes an issue.
Realism - - Let's try to keep this relatively realistic. It's fiction, so of course it doesn't need to completely match reality and be 100% plausible. Still, don't go over the top and do not god mod or power play.
Joining - - I will read over your characters and roleplay sample and make a decision when you join. Please wait to be accepted before beginning to roleplay. In addition, there may only be a total of six people in this roleplay at a time, with up to two characters each.

Originally affecting only animals, this deadly virus was spread to humans and wiped out the majority of their population before it was even given a name. Its devastation left the remnants of society struggling to survive and forever fearing the sickness. [name] causes catastrophic internal hemorrhaging, leading to death, and may also be accompanied by inflammation of the brain. It can be transmitted through the air or bodily fluids such as blood, sweat or saliva.
The first signs of infection are innocent enough, beginning with a mild fever, tiredness and muscle aches around a week after exposure to the virus. Most of the first to catch the illness thought it was nothing more than a simple cold or minor flu, but as the condition advances it becomes far more serious. Within days of the first symptoms the infected person’s fever rises further and they begin to vomit and cough blood. [name] progresses rapidly, moving on to cause bleeding from the nose, roof of the mouth, eyes, and into the skin, which creates bruises. Fatigue and weakness are extreme by this point.
In some cases, the virus spreads to the brain or triggers an autoimmune response directing the body to attack its own cells, leading to inflammation of the brain. This causes various combinations of headaches, double vision, numbness or paralysis in the face or various parts of the body, struggling with speaking or hearing, hallucinations, agitation, confusion, losing consciousness and seizures.
Even when the infection does not affect the brain directly or through autoimmune issues, [name] usually causes brain damage due to major hemorrhaging which deprives the brain of proper blood flow. Even if someone survives and fights off the virus, they will likely suffer permanent damage.
In the final stages, the illness causes seizures, massive amounts of internal bleeding, and almost always ends in death within the first two weeks since the virus was contracted. No cure is known for this virus; medical treatment originally consisted of only trying to keep the patient alive while their body fought the illness and treating the symptoms, and now that the majority of the population is gone, there is little to no professional medical care to be given. Some survivors have begun the practice of killing infected people as humanely as possible, in an attempt to prevent the spread of the virus and end their suffering.

The graphics and BBCode used on this thread were created by me (⤞ r e a) and are for my use only unless I say otherwise. The graphics use a free stock image from stocksnap.io, and another from unsplash.com. The quotes used at the top of the other sections are not my own and have been credited when possible. The Long Dark is the creation of Hinterland Studio and any characters used in this roleplay belong to their respective roleplayers.
In addition, I'd like to thank my amazing friends ᴏᴡʟ and ⁻ ⁻ ☾ ᵇˡᵘᵉ ᵐᵒᵒᶰ for their support and for helping me get this roleplay off the ground. One of Owl's suggestions inspired its title, and their feedback and ideas were invaluable. Without them, A Nameless Fear would still be an unfinished mess left to collect dust.
