like i know you don't mean to be creepy but when you say that, about any country not just Ireland, it is really creepy.
i remember drawing a whole bunch of characters and one guy was Korean, and someone said 'is the guy with spiky hair Asian? Because if he is, I love him!' ... like ... imagine someone saying that about you or your little sister or something... doesn't that make your cringe? Doesn't that sound a little predatory? I know these things are said with the best intentions but they hurt people, they are not compliments. If you're trying to be nice, don't say those things. They are not compliments. No one hears that and feels better. They feel marginalized, like they're different. It's not a compliment.
it makes people sound like objects 'Are those red shoes?? I love red shoes!!' and, for me, it automatically flags you, I then stay away from you, it makes me uncomfortable to no ends, I go out of my way to avoid you. It tells me certain things about your personality, about your beliefs and I'll probably never interact with you again lol.
there's a difference between appreciating a country, culture and its people and having a fetish over an entire race of people. Calling other people 'exotic', particularity people of colour, is dehumanizing and messed up. This isn't the Victorian ages. Grow up.
Odds are if you've ever said something like that to someone on here too, these forums, they're just a kid. Not something different, or exotic, a kid behind a computer screen, with homework, and acne, and everything else you have.
other people from other countries aren't aliens stop being so '''fascinated''' just because our countries have culture.
I'm into not into K-pop and I'm not into anime anymore, but it's rampant in those fandoms, particularly K-pop. Those people don't exist for you to make yourself feel better because you're obviously not a racist, you love Korean boys they're all so cute.
this isn't a call out post for anyone in particular and I'm not trying to attack K-pop or anime fans, most of you guys seem real nice. And if you have said stuff like this in the past and now you feel bad about yourself after reading this and all that, like, don't, you said some messed up things maybe but you probably didn't know any better, that's in the past now and there's nothing you can do about it. Just don't say that stuff again in the future, it's not that hard to not type something.
It just really riles me up, I'm sick of the 'Irish people are so cool lol Top o' the mornin' to ya!!11' I'm sick of seeing people put other people, other humans, on these disgusting pedestals like they're trophies I can't even relate to the worst of it because I'm White and Ireland is more turned into an annoying, but not the most harmful stereotype (how many drunk Irish people have you seen on TV???? Irish redheaded drunks???) whereas other countries have their culture appropriated and very harmful stereotypes that could seriously alter their lives.
I can't imagine how awful it must be to receive comments like that about your skin and my heart goes out to all the kids who do know what it's like. Because it's meant to be a compliment, it's meant to sound nice and if you speak up about it then "What's wrong with you??? Can't you take a compliment?? God, you're so sensitive and salty, just looking for something to complain about. I'm not being racist, I was being polite I love Asian people!"
I'm not saying you shouldn't enjoy other cultures and learn about things you're interested in, spreading culture and challenging old barriers is healthy and good for society as a whole. It makes us more tolerant and open minded.
Just, if you're ever going to say something to someone about their nationality, think, if it was said to you, would you find it creepy? And if in doubt, don't say it. There are more civil ways to show you appreciate a country's history.

idk i mostly agree but i also think ppl from other countries are Neat and i like hearing abt cultural differences n stuff (like america is WILD... ) and i dont mind when ppl are like 'omg youre from new zealand thats cool' (no its just trees and being far from the rest of the world) or like 'omg ur [insert ethnicity] thats so cool' bc.. ok honestly it is cool. my heritage is cool. i am cool....... basically the main thing is, as long as its not like, patronising or creepy or anything, im ok with it
also tbh for me i dont mind if its someone within like... The Group (like i am Constantly making jokes abt my own countries and other ppl from those respective countries making (good) jokes abt them too is like..... yes good) but when like....say, a white person says some kind of joke abt one of the islands im from im like.... okay?? wow?? its the elusive Blatant Racist... in the wild... what an interesting but absolutely gross creature... (though i only care when its the Person Of Colour tm side of me being mocked by outsiders like, im part irish too and i dont really care when non-irish ppl make irish jokes but tbh thats bc ive never lived there or anything probably. on another note, u guys have fantastic accents, of all the ones ive heard anyway)
BUT OVERALL....... fetishising or being otherwise creepy abt ppl just bc theyre ~exotic~ (dont say that) or different to u in any way is like...... not a good look tbh. and on a related note, assuming u have more knowledge abt a culture/ethnicity or something bc u saw a show/went on holiday there/lived there briefly/learnt the language/read a book once/whatever like.... also not a good look!! basically overall i agree except for some fine details that i wanted to add bc i love to talk or something
(and omg....... some kpop fans are The Worst like i adore exo but if ppl mention them irl ill be like... who??? i-dont-know-her.gif..... my heart goes out to all u koreans out there... i apologise on behalf of every ifan thats ever been creepy its so bad im so sorry)

k so I totally agree with you about what you said, but I also agree with Bronzewing that it's okay to think other countries cultures are cool/interesting as long as you don't dehumanize them
and I'm white as snow but if I met someone who was like "omg ur from Canada?? That's so cool!!" I wouldn't mind it, but if they were like "haha ur Canadian? enjoy riding ur moose to school and living in an igloo eh!!" I wouldn't like that, so I can relate
but yea I think more people need to realize that people of other cultures are, yknow, people, and not just "exotic" objects (and omd kpop fans can be so creepy, I feel sorry for all Koreans. weeaboos can be rlly creepy also)

Ohhh no I'm not saying you shouldn't want to learn about other cultures!! I think cultural education is v important, and it's p neat too. I'm just saying there's a certain way to show your appreciation for a culture that's respectful and welcomed, and a way of doing it that's creepy and gross

You have a very good point.
Honestly, this is so incredibly messed up. Like, as in the example above, you can have friends that are Irish and care about/love many Irish people. But that doesn't mean you automatically like EVERY Irish person you meet. Plus it groups them together unfairly when there are so many individuals in the collective group. Person A and Person B can be totally different so it's unfair to judge and sort them based on ONE quality.

This makes me feel like I should apologize x.o
I'm one of those people that is fascinated by other people, countries and cultures. I love learning about them because I don't really feel like I have a culture? But I'm just some basic white American so why would that even matter? haha. I feel like I fit pretty much everything you guys are saying right now, and I make insensitive jokes about other countries as well because I'm straight up a terribly rude human being. So I'm terribly sorry if I've ever said any of those things to you guys, I didn't mean to bother you guys.

If anyone in my family's ever shot someone. People make fun of me just because I say "y'all." That I'm uneducated because of my accent. I tell people I'm from Texas, and it's not unusual for them to laugh like it's a joke and then proceed to ask me stupid stereotype questions like if it's true we all wear cowboy hats outside. So when someone tells me that they do like that I'm Texan, that they find it a good thing, I love it, because it's not very often. I've been made fun of for my Irish ancestry, people asking me if my grandfather is a drunk. I've been made fun of for my German ancestry, being asked if I have Natzi blood. I know exactly how you feel.
Do not assume to know my struggles just because I said I was a fricking Texan. THAT'S cringey.

Two things; 1. Is saying "I love _______ accents" dehumanizing in your opinion, @sappho ? Cause I honestly do really like Australian and Irish accents.... 2. I live in the US, I'm originally from Connecticut, but moved to Texas for school, and Saint Ambrosef has a point. Sooooo many people dehumanize Texans because of stereotypes, and just because it is still just a different state, it honestly feels like a different country. So people from Texas do have to deal with that stuff too...

I'm really not trying to upset anyone here, I'm just saying that yes, even if people do ask you stupid questions, it can't compare to what, say, a Japanese person would be asked. I don't think you know how I feel about this, and your reaction is kind of only reinforcing that on me. This isn't a competition, and I'm sorry you're upset now.

I'm offended because I'm sick of people just ~assuming~ things about others they don't know at all. my point is that yes, i do know what it's like to face annoying stereotypes and fettishes, and it's irritating for someone over the internet tell me that it's not plausible because of where I'm from. again, i know others have it worse and i'm not trying to say they don't. i'm just trying to point out that doesn't mean i haven't had a taste of it before.

Stereotypes are a global thing and it doesn't matter where your from they hurt. "you don't have it as bad" - no. You're going to find some seriously nasty things said about anyone of any culture or nation. It'd be insensitive to assume otherwise.

You literally just said 'Who are you to declare that the stereotypes I experience aren't as bad as a Japanese person's?' You were the one to bring up invalidating feelings, not me, so I feel like you've got something going on in your life rn, otherwise, why bother? So I really don't want to fight about this, I'm trying to talk about something that bothers me and it's derailed horribly. Just the way you reacted so violently to me just trying to say that I don't think we're on the same wavelength here, that I don't think we're talking about the same kind of things, makes me believe that you don't understand, otherwise I think we might get along better. You said you had German blood, not that you were half German, which is p different. (Side note, I'm actually half German too, my dad and his family are from Cologne, lol what a coincidence) I'm sorry you get called that, I'm not happy this happens to anyone, and I'm not trying to invalidate what's happened to you, I'm saying that you were initially getting a little off topic by comparing what I was talking about to the teasing you get for being from Texas.

tbh i really do agree with you?? like im not big on social justice or anything but it can be really creepy like im into kpop and ive heard multiple times my friends saying "lmao i need me a korean bf" "koreans are so hot!!!1" and it always makes me feel hella uncomfortable, even though im white. ur right that the kpop 'fandom' is pre bad in that regard?? like imo it's fine if ur like 'o i rlly like black hair so i tend to be attracted to people from asia" (i kno that there are tons of other people that have black hair but u kno like black hair is common n stuff so but when ppl say they're attracted to asians it's also like "india, korea, malaysia, sri lanka, laos, thailand, taiwan, etc.) are all different countries and they're all diverse and have different culture" sorry im rambling n people probably wont agree with me but whatever
also im real sorry i tend to say bloody a lot

When I first saw this thread, many hours ago, I thought "Those are some interesting points, but lot's of people are going to have something to say about it." But when I look back on this thread, I was not expecting to see this. We can argue about things calmly without insulting people. Or, as in a lot of the posts here, we cannot. Take this as a warning that arguing like this won't achieve anything positive, nobody is going to go "Oh right, I can now see the fault in my views" after being insulted.

ok i dont want to be inflammatory or anything but are u equating ur experiences as an irish person with the experiences of People of Colour tm? i dont think u are (at least, i appreciate that u said ur experiences arent as bad) but then i also dont think shadowstalker is? i think theyre just saying that they have negative stereotypes abt them too like the english and irish ppl itt have said-- i dont see how its any different bc theyre american maybe i missed something tbh!! bc i dont know what ur getting at (ps i am Of Colour myself and im not american in the slightest) Oh no, definitely not, I can't understand what that's like, I know I can't, I'm trying to say there's a difference between 'do you ride a horse to school?' and being unable to see anyone from your country on tv when they're not portraying a stereotype they never said their issues were the same though? and i dont blame them for thinking that this was a white ppl inclusive thread bc the title is literally abt being irish? and being polynesian (with a visible, but not cultural, sprinkling of whiteness) i absolutely know what its like to see a total of 0 ppl like me in the mainstream media (ok with moana now i guess its like... a lil bit. and i will happily claim the rock despite the fact that we probably dont rly look alike thx my smallness) edit: didnt see ur post otherwise i wouldnt have replied but it has now been Seen 7:10am. and again; im personally not trying to argue or be mean im just confused tbh!!
