Zuko watched Spook’s expression, relief flooding him once he realized his friend seemed to be calming down. That was a good thing… it meant that they would likely be able to see Wylan again without anyone getting hurt. Not that he thought Spook was dangerous, but… he had never seen Spook with such wildness in his eyes. He had never seen his friend scared to the point of desperate panic. He had seen Spook scared plenty of times before - there was a reason the other boy had earned that name - but never like that. That was… well, that was what Zuko thought he would be like if anything actually happened to Sal. It seemed they both cared deeply about their friends. Deeply enough that it could be dangerous if they were left to their own devices.
“You don’t need to apologize to me,” he said after a moment, then glanced towards Sal to make sure he had given an appropriate response. “I get it,” he added, careful not to let the silence hang for too long. “I mean… after what happened…” whatever else Zuko had been about to say was left by the wayside as he heard Sal’s voice, suddenly much louder than it had been.
“No,” he told Spook under his breath even as he stood to meet Hunter. “But we can figure it out as soon as we see Wylan.”
Hunter didn’t hear what Sherlock had to say to him as he left, and he wasn’t sure he cared. Sherlock could have his own ideas as much as he wanted, and Hunter was fairly certain he didn’t want to hear most of them. It wasn’t like Sherlock was the most pleasant person anyway. He may have saved Wylan’s life, but that didn’t absolve him of being an asshole sometimes. Or… most of the time.
It wasn’t necessary to think about Sherlock for much longer, as he found Sal and Zuko both in front of him suddenly.
“Wylan’s alive,” he said, wanting to make that clear for everyone before he continued. “I think he’s even steady right now. I mean… Sherlock had to take his arm, but he seemed pretty satisfied with his work. He doesn’t want any of us in there with Wylan, but I told him that was bull and that there would be no stopping us if we wanted to be there for our friend. So… he thinks we’re all idiots, but I’m not sure I care.”
“Hopefully,” Newt said, though there was a hint of doubt in his voice. “I don’t really know how any of that works. I mean… that’s probably the kind of stuff they teach in science classes, right?” He didn’t actually know. He had a feeling he would have enjoyed science classes if he could remember taking any of them. They seemed like they would work his brain in just the right way to make him think he could actually accomplish something. That was how science textbooks worked, at least, and he had a feeling it would have been even clearer and more enjoyable if there were someone there to actually teach him the material instead of him relying on only the words of someone who was probably long dead.
“A pizza party sounds nice,” he said, searching Sweets’ gaze. “I mean… I don’t really know how it’s different than another party, but I guess I’ve never been to a party at all, so…” he shrugged, red coloring his cheeks. He shook the thought away, affection in his gaze as he glanced back in the direction of their makeshift camp.
“I never imagined I’d actually have people who wanted me around. Who I wouldn’t be a burden to, at least.” He was very rarely that open and vulnerable, but the moment felt as though it deserved it.
Hinata wasn’t used to thinking things through ahead of time. He knew he needed to get better at it, but… there were a lot of things in the new world that needed to be reacted to without thinking about it. Right now, he was more concerned about finding his friends than he was about any consequences that might arise from setting off an explosive. Of course he knew it was dangerous - if it weren’t, Wylan would have taught him how to do it ages ago. He also knew that it was the only thing that would cause all of them to come back. Anxiety thrummed through him, causing him to be even more fidgety and restless than usual. He didn’t want Kenma to put himself at risk to light the fuse, but it was for the best. They would make sure all their friends came back. Surely some of the adults would be angry, but they could deal with that. Hinata had always found it was much easier to ask forgiveness than permission. And after knowing that all of his friends had died without him being able to do anything to help them… he wasn’t even sure he would need to ask forgiveness after this. Surely everyone would understand.
And then the fuse was lit and Hinata waited until Kenma was close to grab his hand and continue running the rest of the way. He wasn’t going to let Kenma get caught by the explosive. He ran faster and further than was strictly necessary, but even he knew that explosions weren’t anything to mess with, especially when they weren’t carefully constructed by an expert.
