~~
in a city where magic runs amok through its streets, an art thief begins plucking cursed instruments from the walls of museums and galleries. concerned about the no-doubt nefarious plans of this unknown criminal, a private investigation organization sends its two finest musically-oriented detectives.
unfortunately, said detectives are often at each other's throats, and cannot stand each other. yet, slowly but surely, fate demands that they begin to see eye to eye, and allow themselves to explore new emotions regarding each other. friendship? or, perhaps, even love?

ari viola master || he/him Ari is one thin and boney lad, on the short side, with dark brown skin and black curls that hover just past his ears. His eyes are deep-set and a deep brown, nearly black. He has a couple of tattoos of an elder tree spiraling up his arm and likes to wear one (1) dangly earring. His left arm stops below the elbow, and Ari wears a body-powered prosthetic split hook in his hand's place. If he's at work, he'll wear the 'official' attire of some dark-colored button-up and a tie horribly tied; if he's not, oversized sweatshirts for days.
Ari is a chaotic, nigh unpredictable human being, with a flair for the dramatic. He tends to be grumpy and snappish, and is easily irritable; he's working on his anger issues, but his bark is far worse than his bite. He highly values his independence and strongly dislikes being told what to do, which naturally has worked against him in many a job. Another thing he values is intelligence, prizing his own and intolerant of idiots and the ignorant. While Ari struggles to make meaningful connections with others and navigate a social situation properly, he is honest to a fault and dedicated to his work. If he connects to another being (usually a cat, more often a plant), he'll show his affection with little gifts and soft smiles.
Ari is a trans man who grew up with a mother who tried to push him into an image to her liking, attempting to turn him into a ballet and violin prodigy. Chafing under the pressure and the control, Ari became incredibly rebellious and attention-seeking, all up to the day he lost his arm in a car crash. His mother grew resentful towards him for ruining her own dreams of seeing her child grow up into a classical darling, and Ari grew resentful towards his mother for her conditional love. Ari struggled with anxiety and depression following his trauma and coped by self-medicating, until he finally received help after leaving high school. After becoming somewhat stable, Ari got accidentally recruited by the private investigation agency when they dialed the wrong number, but after showing off his deductive reasoning the PI agency shrugged their shoulders and decided to let him stay on, despite his rather unorthodox ways.
A lone wolf, Ari has worked many freelance jobs as a hacker and mechanic after dropping out of med school. He works well with machines and gears, not people. He still maintains some medical knowledge. He abandoned the violin and took up viola instead, teaching himself and actively rebelling against his mother and childhood learning by fully embracing the avant-garde and digital of the modern music world.

I'm so excited for this lmao
Simon Cello master- he/him
Simon is a rather long legged fellow thanks to his last growth spurt in high school. He's tall and lanky, with pale skin and black curly hair. His face is lightly freckled and he has blue eyes that often hide behind classes. Now that he's older, he has two full tattoo sleeves that are an assortment of his previous and current nerdy interests. Plenty of music and musical related tattoos, smattered with Star Wars, Harry Potter (although we do not Stan the author), warriors, assassins creed, pokemon and even Zelda. He fully plans on getting more, but any tattoos he has are often hidden with the suits he wears to work.
They are a bit recognizable, after all.
At work, he's often in a suit and tie, going to great lengths to make sure it's absolute perfection before he leaves the house. On days off, he does prefer more relaxed clothing, often opting for some jeans and a t shirt, not that anyone at the office would actually know this. He really tries his best to keep work and private life completely separate, despite his colleagues attempts to change that.
Not to say he isn't friendly towards his coworkers, of course he is! He just doesn't give out much with his personal life. It's like pulling teeth with him, but his coworkers finally found out that he is currently single and has two cats... thats about it. His two are the only thing he'll openly talk about, he loves them and will show you a powerpoint presentation of just photos if you give him the chance.
He only talks with his uncles, who got custody of him his sophomore year of high school, and his younger sister, whom he absolutely adores. Before then, he doesn't talk much about it. This is around the same time he lost his left leg (knee down) from cancer so overall that year isn't exactly one he talks about outside of ~therapy~.
He prefers playing the cello, it's what his focus was when he went to music school, but he can technically play most stringed instruments, percussion (marching band in high school), and kind of can play the flute but has bad lungs so he can't play it well. Honestly there's probably more to add but I suck at these so woohoo we'll learn more about Simon as the role-play goes on.

((good grief i was off the boards for longer than i thought, sorry! here’s a quick starter!))
-- ♬ -- Soft music played through the speakers in the small office where a small handful of detectives and consultants hammered away on their keyboards, incessantly scanning for license plates or uploading spicy pictures to send to their paranoid clients. The head of the PI agency allowed for people to plug their phones in and play their own playlists to work from, and today it was Ari’s turn. Perhaps to some “music” would be a strange word to use to describe the sounds emanating from the ceiling. A few seconds of silence before a twang entered the air, then a few more seconds before another contemplative pluck of a guitar string, reverberating though the air for another few seconds before thump.
Music to my ears, Ari thought with a wry smile. Part of him did sincerely enjoy the strangeness of the eclectic music he tendered to gather, but another part of him just enjoyed the chaos that tended to ensue. Besides, he had just finished wrapping up a case and was absolutely and utterly bored.
He peeked over at his desk mate, Simon. “Hey, hey Simon,” Ari said, a mischievous light in his eye. “How do you like no. 9?”

(You're good! I kind of died today anyways)
Ari's music days were quite possibly the worst and Simon was going to personally gouge both his and his desk partners eardrums out if he had to hear another 'piece' from him. He was ready to bash his head into the desk, because he was trying to focus, but to no avail. Unfortunately, their boss didn't allow for personal headphones, something about professionality and how everyone had to be listening no matter what.
Which meant he had to deal with these stupid twangs until the end of work.
The young man immediately scowled at the sight of Ari, who peeked over to his desk, not at all appreciating the question. "You play something like this again and I'll personally lock you out of your own phone," He warned, even if the threat had absolutely no teeth behind it, because they both knew it would be Simons as.s on the line if he started anything with Ari and his questionable music choices. He grimaced when the twanging started again, hating how random the notes were as he gestured towards the ceiling, "Do you actually consider this music?" He complained, ignoring the snickers from nearby. This was a common occurrence, the two of them fighting, and at this point it was a source of amsuement to literally anyone else here.

-- ♬ -- “Hah! You could try!” Ari still hovered a protective hand over his phone. “What, you don’t consider this music?” He said, hiding the tinge of hurt hovering behind his tongue. He gestured at the sound of a twang. “Speaking in your terms, it’s created from an instrument, and you could arguably write sheet music for it. It’d just have a lot of musical rests.”
Another satisfying twang. "So many rests."
“Besides,” Ari said with a dismissive wave, “what kind of dreary record player of classics would you dredge up from your grandparent’s basement to play in here?”
There came the slapping of smart shoes against a tiled floor, and Ari hurriedly clicked out of the window of the game he was secretly playing beside his actual work as the head of the office walked up.
“Ari, you’ve finished with your most recent case, haven’t you?” she said, hair bundled up neatly and thick glasses between her fingers. “You as well, Simon?” she said, turning to Ari’s desk mate.
“Sure…?” Ari said.
“Good,” she said. “I have a new case for the two of you.” With that, a folder was unceremoniously slapped onto the desktop. “Silver Strings, or as they are known to us at the present moment,” she said. “Classic art thief, targeting highly cursed objects from museums and the like. The police are already tracking them down for crime reasons, but we’re most concerned -“ she tapped the manilla folder with a long fingernail, “- with the more paranormal implications of hoarding such instruments of power.”
“Sorry,” Ari said, gesturing between him and Simon with a skeptical look on his face. “The two of us?”
“That’s right.” An alarm went off from her watch, and when she checked it her eyebrows rose up. “The details are in the folder. I expect you’ll do fine.” And with that, she walked right off.
Ari looked over at Simon with a bewildered look. “I’m sorry. Us? Full offense, but I think I'd work better with an undead rhino that wants to eat my guts.”

(hahah sorry my motivation took a ~nose dive~ last week. I should be on more this week, though!)
Simons expression only soured more when Ari argued that this was technically music, shaking his head at the next twang. "Because its districting and a random assortment of notes. There's no reasoning behind it," He shoots back immediately, fingers drumming against the desk impatiently, glowering at his desk partner. He'd already put in a request twice to move desks, he could not work with Ari, but for some reason his requests were always denied.
So he was stuck here, with someone insulting his own music taste... this someone who was putting this so-called music on repeat for their entire shift. The young man gave him an irritated glare when his own music tastes were mocked. "Classical music is literally made for focus. It's not distracting. It's science." Not to mention he'd also played music from more of his... emo high school days before, too. On the few days that Ari wasn't there, since he doubted that his high school music tastes weren't something his desk mate wouldn't mock.
So, classical music it was. It helped that it clearly bugged his desk partner, too. A bit of revenge for playing "guitar notes" over the speaker whenever he got the chance.
Simon opened his mouth, ready to defend himself more, when their boss came walking down the hall with her tell-tale slap of her shoes. Simon absently clicked to another page of his report, not particularly worried about getting caught doing something he wasn't supposed to do, looking up at the question. "Yeah, I"m just revising my report," He told her, blanching at the announcement that he'd be working with Ari.
"Me and Ari." Simon confirmed, lips thinning just a little, not at all happy at the arrangement. He turned to Ari when their boss left, not giving either of them the chance to argue much, wrinkling his nose.
'I’m sorry. Us? Full offense, but I think I'd work better with an undead rhino that wants to eat my guts,' Simon's face flushed immediately at that, his displeased expression turning into more irritation now at that as he straightened his back and tie, a sign of his own discomfort before focusing on the mission at hand.
"No, no. The sentiment is shared." He grumbled, reaching over and taking the file from Ari with a frown. "It's not like we can pass this off to anyone else, either... lets just get this one done as quickly as possible. " He muttered, honestly mostly to himself as he started to look through the folder. "But, really. Cursed objects? Who'd want those in their- oh. Look at that." He was distracted mid sentence, staring at a rather gorgeous violin that he'd seen before at museums.
This just got a lot more interesting.

((all good!!))
Ari peeked over Simon’s shoulder. “Well, would you look at that,” he said, clearly just as transfixed by the image of the violin. He very nearly stroked the paper in awe, as if wishing his fingers could brush against the wood itself. “Let me guess. It’s the fiddle that summons the devil or something. No, wait, that’s a song.”
Ari twirled back around in his seat and began popping up new tabs on his computer, squishing the twenty or so tabs he already had up. “Okay, this guy has stolen the Piano of Unsung Dead, and the Cello of Cries. The piano dates back to the 1800’s, made by the Steinway family - dang, that’s a high quality piano. It hasn’t been seen by the public until the original owner’s mansion burned down and it got locked behind glass at a museum.”
Another click, and Ari was scrolling through the comments of a Utube documentary. “Apparently it can raise the dead. Or sing the songs of the dead. The cello’s something similar, all about death and reincarnation.”
Ari was then looking through a reddit forum. “This particular violin was made in Italy, she’s like a bajillion years old. Was cursed by one of the last remaining members of the original family who owned it. What else has this guy stolen?”
He turned back to Simon. “So, like, old, cursed, expensive instruments that have to do with the dead. What does HQ want us to do about it?”
What Ari didn't know was that what lied under Simon’s fingertips was the true objective of their mission: find Silver Strings, and buy back the stolen violin - under the alias of a fabulously wealthy couple.

Simon was transfixed with it, before shaking his head at the guess, "No, no. Couldn't be that. " Even before Ari corrected himself, partially enamored by the woodwork and the effort put into making an instrument this gorgeous. He continued reading through the information, tilting his head towards Ari when he started explaining what was going on with this instrument... and the thief. Apparently, they were stealing plenty more than just this one instrument. A piano and a Cello, too. Both related to death, so this violin had to be similar too, right?
He hummed absently, scanning through the information before paling a little, and swearing under his breathe at the sight of the objective: act as a famously wealthy couple who want this violin.
"You have got to be kidding me- Dorothy-Anne, what the hell do you mean we're going to be a couple?" He called out, looking immersiably annoyed at this little part of the mission, glaring at the door where their boss had escaped to. He then turned to Ari and shoved the paper in his direction. "She wants us to be some famous power-couple from the music industry. Apparently it's a necessary part of this plan," He had to cover up the whine that was starting to come out of his voice, incredibly annoyed at that little part.
It wasn't like he hadn't been assigned some weird parts before- but a couple, really? And a couple with Ari? There was absolutely no chemistry there to begin with, how did anyone think this would work? Of course, he was painfully unaware of the giggles and gossip about the two of them in the office, or else he'd be a lot more annoyed at this attempt to get the two together.
"I don't see why we couldn't be business associates- or, hel.l, what about siblings or cousins?"
