Personally I think:
—————
General:
-Most important one first- character personality consistency. Some cats from TPB are totally different in their prequels. Like obv they’re gonna be somewhat different when younger but let them grow into their og persona, have them feel like the same character at the least. Also come cats who act a certain way when they’re younger completely lose their distinctive personality traits when they grow old and become more bland or blend in. Also, cats who develop person traits just to cause drama....like a lot of xenophobic cats who didn’t really seem like the type before, or just overall acting ooc. Some personality traits seem like they’re there for some cats but aren’t pronounced or distinct enough to make them stand out more and feel like their own cat.
-Second most important, give more personality to background cats or not include them at all. The fact that some only exist in allegiances or barely speak any lines ( even if they’re in pov clan or related to important characters) is sad. Some cats really just don’t need to exist either because they serve no purpose and are rarely even mentioned. Maybe more BG characters should be killed off instead of ones that were just getting a personality (looking at you guys, Larksong, Rosepetal, Stemleaf, Strikestone, etc)
-Third most important....pay more attention to grammar, spelling, and family relations. Esp family relations so kin matters beyond immediate family, or literally even have immediate members act like kin at all bc sometimes they don’t. On a related note, make sure couples aren’t related and give the outsider (Daisy kin, Stormcloud) cats mates. Also, avoid plotholes or continuity errors.
-A little pettier but....some cats really deserve different names. Sparkpelt should’ve been Sparkfire for one.
-Also petty, stop giving apprentices to the same old cats. Give more spotlight to newer and less known characters. This is slowly getting better as seen with Cherryfall, Molewhisker, and Rosepetal. Some senior warriors never got apprentices or finished training the. Brightheart comes to mind.
-Cats who have a sudden shift in character (eg. Onestar, maybe Ashfur?) should be hinted at so their change makes sense instead of being random and out of the blue. Example for Onestar, show in either the first series or early in TNP that Onewhiskers nice exterior is just a facade, or show him slowly change from nice to bad, maybe have him think “out loud” so he understand his internal sense of thinking on the matter of him being leader, so it’s not so out of nowhere.
-StarClan as a whole needs to be reworked. How powerful are they? They keep going back and forth between very strong, and not being able to do anything. There needs to be a definitive limit to what they can and can’t do. They should also be kept more mysterious. They also shouldn’t be able to enter the physical realm. It makes no sense.
-Literally let Bramble and Squirrel have a good relationship. I understand the drama in TNP, after PoT and in BrS. But SqH? C’mon. Let them be chill for once, they solved their issues now haven’t they?
——
DotC:
-Don’t give Star Flower to Skystar. He doesn’t deserve it, esp since her being with his son before makes it so weird. Rather, have Thunder and Star Flower make up, give her some character redemption / development, instead of throwing in someone new (Violet) last minute.
-Gray Wing doesn’t need Slate. His story of being a good father despite his “kits” not being biological was really empowering, the facts that he just gets kits in the end anyway was..eh.
-Get rid of Slash and his plot since no one seems to like him
-Give Shadowstar’s Life a more cohesive plot instead of Quickwater suddenly being evil or smth
——
Prequel era:
-Yellowfang doesn’t need powers. Let her become a medcat due to actual empathy or care for others, not literally feeling their physical pain. YS could also just be so much better if she was more in character- she’s barely snarky or her usual cranky grandma self til the very end of the book.
-Retcon or rewrite Spottedleaf’s Heart or Redtail’s Debt entirely.
——
TPB/TNP midquels:
-Would be interesting and make more genetic sense if Hawk and Moth came from TigerLeopard, but. Sasha is fine too. But she only exists to be their mom, so it wouldn’t be that different (and possibly more dramatic) if it was Leopard.
-Literally I wanna see Firestar tell Spottedleaf off. I want him to stand up for his relationship with Sandstorm. Let her know that she’s being toxic and a creep, and that he got over her, she should too. It’s annoying how the authors thought that StarClan FireSpotted could’ve even been a thing. They barely knew each other in life, Sand is literally his wife who he had kids with.
——
TNP:
-Have POVs be more distributed among the journey cats. There were 6 journey cats plus Leafpool, maybe one POV of each journey cat per book (excluding Feathertail since she dies early), with Leafpool’s POV in most of the books except for maybe one or even a couple? Find a way to balance the subplots (BrambleHawk, LeafCrow, BrambleSquirrel) without pushing other main cats out of the picture. I like Crow for Starlight POV instead of Bramble so we see WC’s civil war and his feeling for Feather and Leaf from his POV. Maybe Tawnypelt can have Dawn instead of Squirrel or Leaf.
-Have Bramble be a little less dumb in TNP? Like cmon he should know better about his dad. I understand Hawk but not Bramble, the HawkBramble plot line should def still be there but written differently where Hawk’s villainy isn’t as obvious and Bramble figures out he’s training with Tiger somehow.
——
TNP/PoT midquels:
-I feel like SkyClan’s Destiny could have functioned without the twolegplace plot (Stick and Dodge)
——
PoT:
-Have Jayfeather’s visits to ancient times be dreams instead of time travel. Much less confusing / weird that way.
-Don’t reincarnate Cinderpelt. It ended up being totally pointless and just cheap drama.
-Outcast need not exist. It is filler. Same for Sign of the Moon. You could do totally different and more worthwhile things for both of those book placements.
——
OotS:
-Dove and Ivy need a major rework.
-Justice for Briarlight. She got her career ruined just to sit around in the medicine den until she died, I feel like her story would be more empowering if she had a special role (like Tree) or did something very important besides being an assistant. She’s a great cat and deserved better.
-Something has to change for DoveTiger. Not sure how but it needs to be less back and forth, cliche, and drawn out. Do something to make it interesting or either of the two characters likable during their romance, esp in OotS.
-Flametail’s POV is unnecessary.
-I didn’t mind Firestar being the fourth cat but Holly or Ivy still would’ve been better.
-Whats up with TLH? Again, ghost cats being physical makes no sense. Could there have been an explainer exception or reason as to why this time they could when otherwise are not able to? Even the moon being a certain phase would be a better explanation. Also the three were built up so much only to do nothing. I want their powers to have a payoff. Make them be important in the great battle more than other cars somehow because it’s literally what they were born for.
-Have the FireTiger battle last longer.
——
AVoS:
-Have Darktail’s plot last longer so the second half isn’t as forgettable as people seem to say.
-Don’t butcher Finleap’s character. Just let him and Twig be chill.
-Have Violetshine realize that Needletail was abusive, and have Needle apologize for her actions.
——
TBC:
-Don’t butcher Mistystar’s character! She’s literally such a good cat and her TBC self just.....isn’t her. If she’s having dementia make it more obvious. Have her exile Moth for her beliefs (they had beef over it before so it makes sense), not her heritage (very hypocritical)
