It seems like a lot of people don't like the idea of old cats in power positions, and it's fair, that they could die at any time, or they might live forever like Mistystar, however, I don't really see the issue with cats in leader positions being old.
Thornclaw has had experience living in the old territories and the new ones, he's been in countless battles, he's gone through three different leaders, and seen their leading styles, learning what works and what doesn't.
Whereas, a cat fresh out of the apprentice's den like Bristlefrost, doesn't have nearly the same amount of life experience as Thornclaw.
This could be said for any old cat/young cat though, not just those two.
I personally don't think Thornclaw would make a good deputy or leader, but I know older cats who would.
What are your thoughts on this?

As long as they're not offensively old like Mistystar, Graystripe, or to be honest, anyone born before the BloodClan battle, then I don't mind older cats being in charge and actually prefer it.

I don’t have problems with cats being old and becoming leader. But i think there’s a certain cut off age where it gets to the point where its like, is it really fair to the clan to appoint a leader who in a few seasons won’t be able to lead their clan into battle, can’t hardly climb the high tree anymore, memory starts going, etc. I think middle age is probably the best age. However, every cat ages/matures differently so its not a one size fits all scenario

Bluestar, Mistystar, Tallstar, maybe more?
