I think Dovewing saw a deer in book one of Omen of the Stars? I think there could be deer, but not any in the same area of the forest where the clan territories are

There was a mention in OoTS I believe, but literally nothing more than that.

There are cats with the prefix of Deer (Deerfoot, Deerleap) so the Clans at least know they exist.

It would be kinda cool to see the Clans set up large patrols to hunt down deer. I don't know if they physically could but it would be neat nonetheless. The amount of cats who would die in that endeavor would be monstrous. Each female deer would weigh in the realm of ten times as much as a cat at minimum and more than likely far more, to say nothing of bucks who are larger still. A single kick from such an animal would smash very bone in a cat's body, it'd be akin to a human being kicked flush in the chest by something like a giraffe or something. Even discounting kicks, cats are part of the genus Felis, which is poorly built for big game hunting. Their jaws are small in proportion to their body and their arms are not as well developed as those of the pantherine big cats, so even if they manage to avoid being thrown off and climb onto the deer's back, killing it would be a tall task. The only cat on Earth to accomplish anything remotely similar is the Savuti pride hunting weakened and female elephants, but not only is a lion pound for pound built like a jacked body builder compared to a house cat but these elephants are also less powerful proportionately than a deer is and far less speedy. The elephant hunting works because the lions can easily keep up with the elephant as it flees and it can't jump or do any kind of acrobatics. On the other hand, a deer can easily do these things and it makes it far easier to shake the cats off or kill them. Of course, with a sick deer who can't move or a weak fawn anything is possible, but that wouldn't be hunting so much as eating a deer who cannot move alive. And of course, this is the same series where cat claws are inexplicably lightsabers at the demand of the plot and rats can swarm and kill an adult cat, so depending on the book's logic who knows.

I'm just imagining a scene where the cats are discussing their usual drama, and in the background is just a fawn bleating and twitching while they periodically take bites out of it because they can't really kill it quickly. It would fast take the crown for most disturbing scene in the series. At that point, lightsaber claws might actually be preferable.

The next series will have cats in wooden cat armor with stone and antler blades as his descendants, the Deerclan.
