The mess that was his novella aside, how do you feel about him? Even after reading his past, I'm still not really sure how to feel about him.

What's there to feel? He has no character aside from being a corpse if you discount his novella.

Yea I didn't read Redtail's Dead because it heavily contradicted canon. He's literally just a plot device. Even when he popped up briefly in BP he was as generic as they come.

he doesn't have much of a personality to him. i wish his novella was better. bluestar had tigerclaw, lionheart, whitestorm, and other great warriors at her disposal, but redtail was her pick for deputy. i wish we could have learned why, and got a better view at how he interacted with his clanmates and the kind of personality he has. kinda wish that kate had written his novella, at least. we needed someone who'd been working on the series since the prophecies begin. i guess i'll use this thread to plug in this awesome webcomic starring redtail. it's a great au comic to read if you've ever wished for more detailing about redtail's life.

I immediately knew the comic you were referring to! And I completely agree with this. I was fully expecting for the novella to delve into why Bluestar chose him, but we didn't even get that. The two barely even interact. It's why in one BP AU, I have Redtail as not only Bluestar's half brother, but as her first apprentice as well. At least through this, they'd have a close bond either way.

We don't really learn about Redtail other than his terrible novella...so neutral?

Neutral I guess. He must have been a competent deputy if Bluestar chose him as her first deputy before, say, more experienced warriors like Whitestorm or Lionheart. I remember in what I think was the final chapter in Bluestar's Prophecy, he and Bluestar are talking and they're shown to be pretty friendly and Bluestar thinks to himself that she made a good choice.
I do wish his novella actually...showcased more about him? All his book was about was Tigerclaw being this obviously evil cat and the glaring mistake that everyone hates. I wanted to see why Bluestar chose him, and in-book confirmation that Sandstorm is his daughter.

Clearly I should've worded that better. That's my point, if you don't look at the novella then all you get is a fly-bitten carcass who had barely any dialogue and did nothing in the past beyond die to Tigerclaw. It's impossible to have any feelings on him because he never did anything or said anything. My feelings on him are thus the same feelings I have towards that one nameless rogue who Scourge kills, that is to say utter neutrality, and even that rogue I think actually has more lines of dialogue and characterization than Redtail sans novella does.

In the novella Bluestar calls him brave at his Warrior ceremony despite him cowering like a mouse to a hawk and showing no dash of real bravery. Yeah. The novella doesn't even focus on developing Redtail much as a character (Outside not being into battling that much as an apprentice which isn't the norm, which is nice I guess? But eh, not enough). He doesn't at all show to be prime deputy material there. It's instead focused on Tigerstar the obviously so evil cat that these clan cats must be mega dense to not notice something off about him compared to his ITW incarnation where he's more low-key in comparison. Note that his sister's novella has the same problem of focusing on another character they're involved with, the antagonist, rather than focusing on the FRICKING PROTAGONIST. (Focusing on the antag wouldn't be an issue itself, but it hinders these cats novellas specifically)
Also without the novella even then he as no real character. He appears in Starclan ONCE to tell Firestar "Thank you for exposing Tigerstar" and really that's it, that doesn't give him any character. It was a massive missed opportunity to have him be Firestar's Starclan guide instead of his stalker sister, so that we can see him outside of his dead corpse and the leader Ceremony. Even if it wouldn't do much, it'd be SOMETHING other than what we got. As it stands, he's nothing but a corpse for a moment in the first book and a massive plot device for the arc the rest of the others.

This is true, some of the books seem to be doing that a lot lately. Like Mistystar's Omen focusing more on Mothwing, Crowfeather's Trial kind of focusing more on Breezepelt, I know if focused a bit on Crowfeather, and him trying to tear down his walls, and reconcile with his kits, but it also had Breezepelt's "redemption", and you're right about Spottedleaf's novella. I didn't learn anything new about Redtail, Spottedleaf, or Mistystar reading their novellas.

I didn't learn anything new about Redtail, Spottedleaf, or Mistystar reading their novellas. Crow's SE focusing on Breeze felt fine given the entire plot point in the end was his family relationship being mended back together tbh. MO however I agree, and really it did nothing but make me dislike Mistystar even more, given how the way she reacted to Mothwing's atheism just hit way too close to home for me and left the most ashy sour taste in my mouth. Spottedleaf and Redtail's however, books where we're supposed to learn about their PASTS, were so flubbed up. Spottedleaf's novella was so mishandled it's blacklisted by the fandom majority (Not even just that, but misleading blurb for the novella as well I noticed??? She doesn't even switch if it means to "save her clan" as the blurb implies, but rather more like to save herself), and Redtail's was mishandled by the obvious error that I don't need to mention. You don't learn anything about the characters themselves, instead the novellas just add a whole bag of more contradictions to the pile. I don't even give a damn about Spottedleaf but even then I don't know how you can mess up a novella about her past when BP is RIGHT THERE gving you the jist of things. All you had to do from that point is write it from her PoV, that's it.

Mistystar's Omen made me dislike her a little as well, but for a different reason, I hate how she was willing to just let her own son die, because Mothwing didn't believe in StarClan. It's ridiculous how people react to the non-harmful beliefs of others, in the series and IRL. Agreed, like Spottedleaf's novella, could have just been a novella about Thistleclaw training in the Dark Forest, and him deciding to train there willingly, was the reason he got sent to the DF. Spottedleaf wasn't even needed for this storyline, I also hate how it made her yet another medicine cat who didn't want to be a medicine cat. As for Redtail's Debt, it just told us everything we already knew, and nothing at all about Redtail.

i headcannon him to be this really noble, charismatic leader-type based on the tiny bit of dialogue we see from him in the ITW prologue. not much to go off of. any fondness is based on what i would have liked to see him as rather than any true evidence.

Tbh I think that the Erins should have given Redtail a dark side just so that he could be a little more interesting. When I 1st read TPB, he was just the dead cat that the protagonist didn't know about at all, but by now you would expect to know all about him but no he is just the same
