Puddleshine is probably the most underrated ShadowClan medicine cat, he first appeared in AVOS as the kit of Pinenose and Spikefur, along with his brothers, Birchbark, Slatefur, and his sister Lioneye.
Not only that, but he was also the foster brother of Violetshine.
Unlike most other cats in the series, except for a few, like Yellowfang, Goosefeather, Jayfeather, etc, Puddleshine did not get the choice on whether he wanted to be a warrior or a medicine cat, since Littlecloud died, ShadowClan was left without a medicine cat, and Puddleshine was chosen at random.
After being told that he was going to be a medicine cat, Puddleshine only had one moon of training, before receiving his medicine cat name at seven moons old.
This is when everything started to go downhill.
A new disease ravaged the ShadowClan camp called Yellowcough, and the only cure for it, lungwort, grew on WindClan territory!
Unfortunately for poor Puddleshine, the WindClan leader, Onestar, was refusing to give ShadowClan herbs, because he was upset, that rogues stormed into his camp, and killed Furzepelt.
Because of this, some ShadowClan cats died, including the ShadowClan deputy, Crowfrost.
Luckily, the WindClan medicine cat and deputy, Kestrelflight and Harestar, were compassionate enough, they went behind Onestar's back, and gave the herb to ShadowClan, saving any more cats from meeting the same fate as their fallen clanmates.
Unfortunately for poor Puddleshine, his troubles weren't over yet, he was then forced to join The Kin, because most of ShadowClan did, and as a medicine cat, his first duty is to the majority of the clan (I think? I don't really remember that part clearly)
Before joining The Kin, Puddleshine lost his mother, and after ShadowClan were finally able to leave, Puddleshine included, he had lost his father, and his littermates, Birchbark, and Lioneye as well, leaving him only with Slatefur, who, to this day, he has not had a single conversation with.
It's not all doom and gloom though, some moons after, Puddleshine was given Shadowpaw as an apprentice, and from what I can tell, he's been a great mentor so far, who cares deeply about his apprentice.
All in all, I think Puddleshine is a fantastic cat, and he seems to be fitting into his role of a medicine cat extremely well, despite that not being the path he probably would have chosen.
I really hope he gets a novella someday.
What do you think of Puddleshine?
