it's your girl star back with another post about her opinions on books bc she can't come up with original thread ideas. anyways we are going to be discussing the original arc, bc rereading is amazing. let's just dive in.
into the wild
an og classic. i liked it, just as much as i liked it before. it's a good starter to a series, though i do think fireheart and graystripe were made warriors relatively fast. as for the plot i think it's good. i liked seeing tigerclaw's plans unfold and fireheart trying to discover the truth. it does have a shroud of secrecy and what if, and i like that. i don't like tigerclaw showing his aggression though, because that's probably going to further cement guiltiness in fireheart's mind. though it was nice to see the perspective of an outsider, because that way the both of us learn about clan life, fresh and new.
fire and ice
ah, yes, fire and ice. it actually was not as boring as i remembered it to be, though it's still not my favorite. the breaking up of graystripe and fireheart's friendship was actually cool to explore, though it could get annoying at times how none of them were very willing to make it up, and suddenly fireheart is willing to let graystripe do whatever he wants. idk, it's weird. i do appreciate the fact that fireheart isn't so strict on his friend, but i think there needs to be a balance. he doesn't need to control graystripe, as graystripe will do what he wants, but he i think there's a responsibility to lead graystripe away from breaking the code. it was nice to see sandstorm finally warming up to fireheart though, and we're starting to see them progress from acquaintances to friends.
forest of secrets
one of my favorites! i used to be excited for what awaited me next after i read this book. the suspense was killing me, plus the revelation of bluestar's secret kits. though i'm not sure why fireheart was desperate to find this out. normally i would be against the villain being defeated so soon; however, they did not defeat nor kill him, they just exiled him. meaning he could still rise up (and he did). so that was nice. i also didn't expect brokenstar to play a role in tigerclaw's betrayal. on the reread i still enjoyed it, of course. it was interesting to see fireheart succeed on the first time, which is nice, because if he did succeed then that's boring. brokenstar being killed by his own mother was also interesting. overall i like this book.
rising storm
seeing bluestar's deterioration was actually very cool, because it paves the way for fireheart taking the leadership position, and creates conflict in the void tigerclaw left. it was frustrating seeing her not get better, but i guess that's a consequence of tigerclaw's betrayal. things won't be the same afterwards. dealing with cloudpaw was a bit yikes at first, and it was annoying. i suppose that's the point but i can still be annoyed by him. anyways, fireheart and sandstorm arguing was a bit of a "djsafl;asjf;" point for me, but that's just me. i think yellowfang's death was very impactful and done right. honestly her calling fireheart her son was just a sob moment for me. bringing tigerclaw back as tigerstar also set him up as a villain. i mean, he was one, but he's being brought back to the spotlight, instead of hanging around behind the scenes. littlecloud being influenced to become a medicine cat because of cinderpelt's kindness was also a cool touch.
a dangerous path
we are close to the end game y'all. this was cool because we saw bluestar deteriorate further, going so far as to declare war on starclan. her paranoia is incredibly apparent and yet she cannot be deposed of because she is their leader and she will see it as a sign that her clan is turning on her. it's interesting to note that she thinks all her clan members are traitors, barring fireheart and whitestorm. what has her clan done to warrant her ire at them? perhaps they let tigerclaw stay. perhaps for other reasons. nevertheless this impacts everyone else. she refuses to make swiftpaw, thornpaw, and brightpaw warriors, simply because she does not trust their mentors, nor anyone in the camp. (even though brightpaw's mentor is whitestorm, a cat she does seem to trust to an extent) it is fascinating to see how this leads to more destruction, causing bluestar to spiral further into her despair. a vicious cycle. i do not know why she convinces herself windclan has stolen prey, and why she is super convinced it is them, but it does show how far she's fallen. and the dogs. goddamn that was good. and bluestar coming to terms with her kits and with starclan was also pretty good.
the darkest hour
okay look my brain is deteriorating and i cannot for the life of me explain why i like anything lol but let's try. i liked the twist, though i think scourge was a bit too last minute. i also liked firestar questioning starclan, kind of as a parallel to bluestar, and bluestar being the one to rekindle his faith. by this point i can't tell if they've thought up skyclan, but the whole five clans in the forest is either really cool or just "wth." the way they set this up seemed like the final battle, but i am slightly disappointed more cats didn't die. then again, that would've meant thunderclan was a goner, so that probably was for the best. the leadership ceremony was cool to see, and gorsepaw's death was heartbreaking. overall this is my favorite book.
overview
so basically this is one of my favorite arcs. tldr they're all good, but the darkest hour is clearly the best.
