If anyone knows Ink Rose who used to make those headcanon stories of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, I'll be writing something similar: a headcanon story in the form of an Alternate Universe re-write.
Here is an Alternate Universe re-write of how I'd write Sol:
Sol is a descendant of Skyclan. His mother is a loner, his father is a kittypet. His mother is the one with Skyclan blood. Just to make this interesting for an unneeded reason for fun: how about his father be a relative of the kittypet Cody from The New Prophecy?
Anyways. Sol's mother, Cinder, maintains her family tradition of passing down stories of the clans. A lot of details have changed slightly over the years in Cinder's family line. By the time she tells the stories to her kits, the clans have become an evil force that destroyed the lives of their ancestors. Sol, who was originally named Scorch, became obsessed with the stories. His siblings, Perch and Tulip, were annoyed by his enthusiasm.
When they were old enough, the kits traveled with their mother as nomads, not living in one place too long. By the time Sol and his siblings were near apprentice age (around 6 moons), Firestar and Sandstorm have reinstated Skyclan in the gorge.
Cinder and her kits come across the gorge a few moons later (Sol is now around 8 or 9 moons old). Sol suggests they go hunting. Sol is determined to show off to his family, so he chases a mouse into Skyclan camp. The Skyclan cats in this AU are more aggressive since they are a new clan needing to protect and establish their territory. The Skyclan cats attack Cinder and her kits.
Cinder is outraged to find out that they were Skyclan, who have returned to the legendary gorge of their ancestors. Cinder and her kits fight back. In the end, Cinder dies of her injuries, while Sol, Perch, and Tulip barely escape with their lives. Perch and Tulip lash out at Sol after they burry their mother. They claimed if it weren't so Sol's insistence to track the mouse, they wouldn't have come across Skyclan's camp.
Sol in turn defends himself, saying that their mother was right: the clan cats were all horrible savages. Sol curses his ancestry and says he doesn't care if he does come from Skyclan ancestors, he will NOT stand as these groups go around killing cats who cross their borders. Perch and Tulip run away and leave Sol behind.
Sol becomes a nomad once again, now all on his own. He denounces the name his mother gave him and decides to be nameless and avoid everyone he comes across.
For moons, Sol grows bitter and lonely and a deep rooted idea of vengence grows: He hates the clan system that killed his mother and left him with scars.
One day, Sol gets tricked by Twolegs and he gets stuck in a cage. He gets taken in to a vet for a checkup. He gets adopted and becomes a kittypet. His owners name him Harry. Sol is desperate to escape, but the longer he stays a kittypet, the more calm he becomes.
Later, Sol meets his new neighbor, a gray cat who calls himself Graystripe. Graystripe asks Sol for help in returning to the forest, but Sol questions him. He picks his brain for a while and gets answers from him. Graystripe explains he's a Thunderclan cat and a warrior. Sol hides his emotions from him and tells him not to go back to the clans. Graystripe resists, but Sol uses his words to manipulate him into thinking being a kittypet was better. This causes Graystripe to have more doubt in leaving, but eventually he meets Millie and has his adventure anyways to find the clans.
After a long time of living as a kittypet, his owners abandon him. Sol is forced once again to go on the run. He pushes his collar off his neck, leaving another scar. He goes on the run until a big storm hits and he finds himself in the gorge once more.
Since Sol was clean and got neutered, no older Skyclan cat recognizes him. Sol is much older and has a different attitude as well. Sol manages to save Leafstar's kits in the storm, causing Skyclan to let him in. They shelter Sol during the storm, and afterward, Sol weasels his way in to becoming a warrior apprentice. Leafstar says he's a bit old to be an apprentice, but she can still name him Harrypaw. Sol begins his official training. The whole time he's there, he acts niave. He questions everyone who teaches him anything, especially when it came to the warrior code. Sol tries very hard convincing the others that maybe the code wasn't as secure as they thought and that maybe their way of life wasn't the best.
Sol slowly grows his tactics. He begins faking laziness, but still ends up succeeding in any task, trying to trick the younger clan cats that his way was better.
Over time, Leafstar and the others grow suspicious once apprentices start spewing the same doubtful nonsense that Sol was saying all the time. Leafstar tells Sol that he can earn his warrior name, but he has to tell her right then and there that he's accepted the warrior code and he's loyal to it and their way of life. Sol gets smug and begins working his wordplay on her now. Leafstar gradually gets defensive and ends up lashing out at him and accusing him of insulting their ways. Sol gets pushed outof her den. Now in the open, the other Skyclan cats watch as Leafstar accusses Sol of many things, including leading a bad example to their young, disobeying orders, questioning their moral standards when it came to the code, not feeding elders and queens and kits first, etc. Other older Skyclan cats speak up and find the courage to agree with Leafstar outloud.
Sol loses his temper for the first time in moons. He lashes out at the entire clan and insults them openly to their faces. He reminds them of his mother and how she died: he blames them for his life being ruined. He blames the entire clan system, especially the code, since he learned about the code that says warriors defend their borders.
Leafstar holds her own and doesn't give in. She tells him they are not at fault for his mother's death. They were simply protecting their border because they were provoked. Sol gets angry and tries attacking Leafstar, but Billystorm and Sharpclaw step in to protect her. This causes Leafstar to banish Sol from Skyclan and if anyone found a sign of him near, her warriors have permission to attack on sight.
Sol willingly leaves, but smugly says he'll be back to ruin their lives like they ruined his.
Later, Sol sneaks into camp and lures the young kits and apprentices out of camp. He leads them very far from the gorge then leaves them near a fox den. He goes up to the den and claws at it, trying to wake up the fox. After the fox comes out, Sol sneaks back to the gorge to throw a rock into their camp. This makes some cats wake up, only to realize the apprentices den is empty and some kits are missing as well. Skyclan is thrown into panic. Sol runs beside them as they venture out to find the missing cats. He stays hidden. He manages to make it back to where he left the ktis. He makes noises toward the fox to lead them to the kits.
Sol jumps up a tree, a skill he learned as a Skyclan apprentice, and watches as Skyclan cats get torn up by a fox. Once he sees they are busy, he runs back to the camp. Most of the cats were out looking nearby for the kits, so he sneaks into the medicine den and scatters their herbs. He then goes back up the gorge to watch. Skyclan cats come back with wounds, they bring back the apprentices and kits.
Sol watches as the medicine cats struggle to get their herbs back in working condition. Sol watches in glee as a few cats almost die from their wounds. He wishes in his mind for one of them to die like his mother had. One of the Skyclan cats do end up dying. It's Billystorm, Leafstar's mate. Leafstar is devestated. Sol finally leaves, satisfied with his revenge.
Sol once again goes as a nameless loner until he walks toward the beach. There, he comes across Midnight the Badger. Midnight begins talking in order to save herself. Midnight questions if he's a warrior. Sol perks up at this and asks how a badger can speak cat and know what warriors are. Midnight explains herself even more. Sol calms down and let's her go, but he begins manipulating her by acting naive once more in order to gain her trust. He begins his sob story and plays up how Skyclan banished him. Midnight speaks about what she knows willingly over time. Sol lives with Midnight for a while.
Sol ends up learning a lot of knowledge about the clans, their code, their history, and their spiritual ancestors, Starclan. He didn't learn much when he was living in Skyclan, so he is satisfied to learn this much. After a while, Midnight sees a vision of the eclipse and how it'll lead to a big battle at the lake. Sol learns the clan's new location because of this. He then acts Midnight what an eclipse is, and she mentions it's a solar eclipse, where the moon covers the sun. Sol thanks her profusely for his new name, and he says he'll take the name Sol in remeberance of the information she gave him. Midnight encourages Sol to join the clans to finally have a family. Sol says he will.
With all his new information, Sol leaves with a plan: He'll use his information to his advantage and kill the clans from the inside once and for all.
The rest happens as is, with Sol taking over Shadowclan and discrediting everything they know, especially when it comes to Starclan and the warrior code. Sol's focus is to make the clans suffer from the inside. He uses his manipulation to further extend the clan's rivalries with one another.
However, in my version, Sol dies by Blackstar's claws. With his strong will power, Sol becomes a ghost on the physical plane.
And since I'm a believer in the Mastermind Sol theory, Sol watches the clans for years and learns about certain cats until it was his time to rise again with the perfect plan. Sol uses Ashfur to take over Bramblestar. Sol then has the Imposter!Bramblestar wage war on Skyclan. This causes the other clans to get involved. Squirrelflight still figures out it's Ashfur who is possessing Bramblestar, but Shadowsight doesn't know who the mastermind is (the voice he hears sometimes).
Edit:
Leafstar will be the one to find out who the mastermind is thanks to Shadowsight. That's what I forgot to add. If we're to have Skyclan focus, have Leafstar be actively involved in the plot. She and Sol would have a personal grudge just like how Ashfur, the imposter, has a personal grudge with Squirrelflight.
