𝓘𝓷𝓳𝓾𝓻𝓮𝓭❧
Ashenclaw found herself picking at the ground, her eyes not leaving the spot on the dirt she had chosen to be her scratching spot. The clans were already milling about around her, voices filling her ears and only growing louder by the minute. She was sure the gathering would come to a start soon enough, after all the moon wouldn't wait for any cat. Still, she willed the leaders to just adjourn it all together. She didn't want to hear the announcements from her clan. It would only solidify the ruling even more in her heart. A voice rang clearly in her ears, calling out her name. She lifted her head to see the all too familiar mixture of gray and black fur of her denmate, Splashleg.
"What are you doing, Ashenclaw? Don't you want to speak with the other cats? You're usually the center of attention." He teased, settling himself beside her. Their fur brushed ever so softly in the wind, causing her to freeze her tearing of the earth. The tom's eyes drifted downwards to see the destruction she had caused to the ground below her. He didn't say anything, only caught her gaze once more and gave her a look of pity. I don't need your pity, I'm fine. Despite these thoughts, she knew better. She wasn't fine, she hadn't been since the night before. She opened her mouth to say something, to reassure him, possibly herself too, but Sagestar called the meeting together. Giving one last look at Splashleg, the gray molly turned her focus on her clan leader.
Spiderstar no longer looked like the big heroic she-cat she once knew, no, now she appeared small and thin compared to the two other leaders sitting beside her. Her usually groomed black fur was now sticking up in random spots, dirt clinging itself to her as though it was also a pattern on her. Had she always looked like this and I was blind to the fact? Or is something going on beyond what already has?
"We are sad to say that Sparrowtail has passed away after a long battle against his illness." The leader began, letting the cats take a moment to mourn the deputy's passing. Ashenclaw had a sinking feeling in her gut as she awaited the next words to leave her mouth, knowing full well what was to come. "Despite this, clan life must move on. We have welcomed Tallshade as our new deputy." The cheers of Tallshade's name felt like jabs to her heart, each of her clanmates giving the tom looks of pride. Her eyes followed theirs to find the new deputy sitting below the rock, his green eyes shining brightly in the moonlight. As if it was a reflex, she let out a low huff of air. The gray molly wished she could join them in their joy yet jealousy burned deep within. With the announcement now out of way, the gathering could go on and perhaps she could actually enjoy it. Of course, this wasn't how it played out, instead she spent the rest of the night gazing longingly at the spot Tallshade sat.
It had only been two sunrises since the gathering and Ashenflame still didn't feel like her usual jolly self. She went through the motions of the day as though it was on repeat. Wake up. Patrol or hunt. Eat. Sleep. The sorrow only growing more and more in her heart. The one silver lining in all of this was Splashleg, he hadn't left her side since the announcement. The two were sat near the back of the clan at the moment, sharing a squirrel. Not feeling up to eating though, Ashenflame took up gazing out past the walls of the camp. Occasionally, her focus would shift to the leader's den, noting each time Tallshade would enter and leave.
"You know, I thought it'd be you who was chosen to be deputy. Your brother just seems so...hot headed. I remember when we used to play fight in the nursery, don't you? When he would begin to lose he would grow angry and use his claws." Only a grunt was given from his friend beside him, barely listening to him prattle on about something that happened seasons ago. "I'm guessing that doesn't help. Well hey, think of it this way, everyone in the clan knows you're the next in line to be deputy after him. You two are the strongest warriors in the clan!" His praise did little to lift the heaviness on her heart. She had been the one pushing herself past her limits to prove she was worthy of the position, not him. Even then, she couldn't bring herself to be angry at her brother. Splashleg was right, the two of them were the strongest warriors in Webclan. Without a word, Ashenclaw rose to her paws and left to the warrior's den. She didn't feel like eating anymore or even listening to Splashleg talk. As soon as she arrived into the den, she slunk into her nest, curling her tail over her nose and willing sleep to come quickly.
Sunlight filled her eyes as they slowly slid open. The den was empty, all the warriors had gone about their day hours ago. Had she really slept that long? It wasn't like the warrior to oversleep like this yet she had. A long stretch was given to ease the aching in her muscles before she stood up. No one came for me either, how strange. Even Splashleg appeared to have left awhile ago, his scent stale among the moss of his nest. After a few more heartbeats, she got up and made her way into the camp. It felt empty at this time of the day, all the cats out patrolling or tucked away into the corners of camp sharing tongues. Her gaze raked across the clearing, searching for her friend. He didn't appear to be anywhere, had he gone out without her? Another wave of sadness washed over her, even he seemed to be fed up with her self pity.
I can't help it, I'm trying my hardest to get over it. She made her way to the leader's den, searching for the gray specked deputy among the walls. It wasn't unusual for the deputy to leave on a patrol, but even Spiderstar appeared to be nowhere. Her stomach twisted uneasily, was something wrong? I sat in my own self-loathing while the clan may be in danger! No...if the clan was in danger cats wouldn't be resting right now. Then what happened?
As though answering her unspoken questions, Splashleg came bounding from the exit, heading straight towards the medicine cat's den. Maybe I can catch a bit of their conversation if I just...While lost in thought, her legs carried to the side of the medicine cat's den. Ears pricked against the bramble that layered the outside.
"What do you mean? Where are they?" Sootwhisper's voice was coated with concern and panic, making the fur on Ashenclaw's back stand up. "Take me to them right this moment, we don't have a second to spare." The warrior slunk back into the shadows, watching as Sootwhisper rushed out with a wrap full of herbs. Splashleg was quick behind, overtaking the smaller she-cat in two strides. Should I follow? What if they need backup? Without a second thought, Ashenclaw took off after them.
It felt like it had been forever until the two cats in front of her came to a stop in a clearing. Settling back in the darkness of the trees, Ashenclaw watched as Sootwhisper stood over a mess of fur. Gray fur. Is that...Tallshade? Is he okay?! It took everything in her not to come out of her hiding spot and rush to her littermate's side. The dull tortoiseshell she-cat's movement seemed so frantic, quickly grabbing one herb with her paws then reaching for another. She needs to move so I can see what's going! After a few more heartbeats, Sootwhisper did move to call out for Spiderstar. She hadn't even noticed the leader was there, standing off to the side with wide eyes. As though snapped out of her trance, she nudged the tom onto her back and began to race back to camp with the medicine cat in tow. Only one cat remained, Splashleg. He stood there for several moments before quickly jerking his head to look at Ashenclaw's hiding place.
"You can stop your hiding, it's only me." Slowly, she lifted herself up from her crouched position and caught eyes with black tom. His amber eyes seemed oddly calm as he gestured for her to come to him. Moving felt so foreign to her now but she managed to make her way over, stopping in front of him. He turned, bringing his head directly in front of her and resting it on top of hers. "I am sorry you had to see him like that. It must be quiet traumatic for you."
"I...What happened?" The words tumbled out before she had a chance to even think about them, did she want to know what happened?
"Terrible thing, Tallshade got a bit too close to a rabbit while hunting. Horrible mistake but a common one among those who don't know how to properly hunt them." As he explained, Ashenclaw found herself looking over to where he once laid, blood covering the grass where his head was. Do rabbits cause that much blood to come out? Surely not, right? Without a word, the tom beside her nudged her towards camp. The two had been out long enough, it was time to go home.
After a few days had passed, it was obvious Tallshade's condition wasn't improving. Feeling even more hollow than before, Ashenclaw sat in front of Spiderstar inside the leader's den. The black molly looked even more distressed than she had the day of the gathering, her fur clinging to her bones tightly.
"So you know nothing of what happened to your brother?" She asked once more, voice sounding strained as though she was holding something back.
"I told you, no. I know only as much as the rest of the clan." The younger she-cat's voice came out as a croak, grief still filling her.
"Well he's blind now. You know this, the clan knows this. Do you know why I chose him over you, Ashenclaw?" Shaking her head, she kept her eyes on the ground. Days ago, she would have been brimming with questions about why she wasn't chosen as deputy but now it was the furthest thing from her mind. "I chose him for the sole reason I believed you would be the one injured. The night of Sparrowtail's demise I had a vision of ash, it was filling my eyes and everything grew dark, I couldn't see anything. I took it as a sign as you becoming injured much like Tallshade is right now. It seems now I misinterpreted this dream. You can see how I don't believe you weren't involved in what happened but I still hold trust in your words. If it wasn't you, then I know the real culprit behind this. What I saw was warning me of what lies with the Ash." Confusion filled her head, what did she mean? Wasn't it a horrible accident? Surely Starclan would have sent a clearer sign if it wasn't.
"It was an accident, Spiderstar. That's what I was told." She repeated, having already said this at the beginning of their conversation.
"This was no accident, someone saw your grief and decided to take matters into his own paws. The claws in your brother's eyes resemble no rabbit I've ever seen before. They were the marks of a cat."
