It'll be fun to watch everyone lose their mind over human AUs.

1. A little bit of a broad question considering the variety of fanfics out there, I tend to read fanfics for more content/a different spin on the source material. I tend to prefer fanfics that are either AUs that tell the story with a different spin, or are canon-compliant but focus on minor characters. It is interesting to see how different writers perceive different characters.
2. I usually don't like fics about OCs, but I might stay if it's well written. I also don't like it when a character is written extremely out of character.
3. Same cliches as any other fanfiction, really. One that annoys me is the love triangles where a character suddenly becomes evil to make the other romance option look good.
4. I prefer when there aren't any prophecies for the same reason I prefer there not to be prophecies in the main series. Cats tend to just to things because StarClan said so instead of making their own choices.
5. I don't tend to judge fanfiction that harshly. It is, after all, written by amateurs.

1. Sometimes the fics can be just as good as the actual stories. 2. Why are people out there writing about cats doing the do? What is up with that? What is going on with that?? Even as a Cats fan I donโt get it. Seriously whatโs up with that. 3. Canโt tell, I actually donโt read that much fan fiction in the Warriors fandom! 4. The prophecies in the actual books are super obvious and so I donโt expect prophecies to be any more subtle in fan fictions. 5. I really want someone to make an Avengers-level crossover with all other other cat books.

1. Sometimes they can be as good if not better than the actual book depending on the writer. I also really like fics that OC focused than with any canon characters. Allows for more original plot lines with a new cast and you can play around with how much history you'd like to have them remember, or just have it completely seperate from canon in a whole 'nother location period. There's originality there.
2. The abundance of Highschool/Human AUs to where it just doesn't feel like Warriors. I see them everywhere especially on ff.net. Idk, it feels more like its own thing than a Warriors AU, you know?
Another one I can think of is the multichapter ones that DO have potential tend to go unfinished. I remember finding a fanfic focusing on Litlecloud's life and was supposed to be like an SE with some fanon LittleCinder in it, but it hasn't been touched in eons which just saddens me because it was written pretty good and Littlecloud/LittleCinder focus is nonexistent in fics in the fandom. Sadly I'm guilty of this one myself, I have an OCs-only Warriors fic that I intended to focus on my Med. Cat protag (Who's named the same as my forum name here), but lost confidence in my writing by the second chapter and put it on indefinite hiatus. Idk when I'll stop feeling inadequate as a writer to get back to it tbh...
Fics that are linked to canon but make the canon characters SEVERELY OOC, especially in regards to shipping, the shipping ones are the worst offender in this for sure. As much as I love OC x Canon and not gonna complain, can a leas make it believable, you know? Don't pull another "The Better Choice".
(I'm not gonna put the lemons here because tbh I'm fine with them and frankly I haven't ran into many to begin with that appeal to me. I can enjoy them alongside the SFW too, and we sometimes just wanna see our faves do the hookey-pookey with eachother, it's just sooo many are badly written...)
3. Bad love triangles. It's a trope that can work yet it's so poorly done every time. Also this isn't a cliche/trope but where's my Med. Cat protags? Every fic I've seen under the sun has a kit protag that grows up to become a warrior and sometimes leader. Where's something that SUBVERTS that for once? I feel like had I continued my fic I'd be the only one because I literally don't know any others that do a Kit - to - Med. Cat progression than not.
4. I haven't read a fanfic with a prophecy in it yet to say anything on this. The only fic I know with anything predicting the future is mine, and I focus more on omens there than prophecies because prophecies are HARD to do right. But I feel like prophecies are a problem area for many due to the fact that it's too easy to make them obvious.
5. I like them, I just want more that interest me is all. Not even in the fanfic board I've found any that interest me. I'm probably pickier than others though...

1. What do you like about Warriors fanfics? As a writer, they're good to practice writing with low stakes and existing reading group already established. It improves writing, which makes original works better. It's also a medium open to anyone, of any skill level, to support a work they love for the enjoyment of others. As a reader, I enjoy seeing a framework of familiarity with original ideas, which stretch a writer's potential. For example, there's a published author who currently writes in the Warriors Fan Fiction board who writes fan fiction for her enjoyment. Her original twist was introducing an unusual cat breed into the Warriors world and how cats and the Clan situation would react to it. 2. What do you dislike? Generally, I like just about all fan fictions. They're all, on some level, very good. People put a lot of heart and soul into them - after all, they take the time to write them. Things I might tend to dislike about fan fictions is always a personal preference rather than a deal-breaker. I don't tend to like troll fics or ones specifically aimed at LOL-random. This of course has exceptions. The Lighthouse by Katanaheart in WFF starts out as a spoof fic and continues to have humorous elements, but the characters are distinct and the stakes real. As the story progresses each character faces a lot of hardship, but aspects of humor still remain. So as I said, exceptions to the rules are always there. 3. What are some tropes/cliches that you've noticed? Chosen One and Forbidden Romance are usually the big ones. Tropes and cliches aren't inherently wrong, of course. They can be very fun to play around with. These two are of course very common, so it depends on the writer how well it is carried out. Romance is handled very well in ยป ัะฝฮฑdฯฯ โ๏ธ 's Curse on the WFF, for example. I dare anyone not to like both of the romantic options and as a subplot it's enchanting. Curse has it's popularity for a reason. Usually forbidden romance can be handled much like the common YA trope, so to have such a good writer play with that trope - the Clans aren't forbidding the romance, but a curse is - makes the story stand out. I can't wait for Shadowface to get published with her humanized version. Similarly, the common 'chosen one' trope can be turned on its head, like ๐Searipple101๐ likes to do in their fics. Telling the story from a POV who isn't the chosen one, but instead someone very different. Other tropes are found family, which I adore. I tend to play in this trope a lot, heh. 4. What is your opinion on prophecies in Warriors fanfics? Depending on the author, they can be handled very well! Prophecies have a lot of options, and they don't have to stick to how the book carries them out. Fan fiction, after all. Sometimes fics aim to break a prophecy, or the writing carries it through. New Blood by phantomstar57 has a prophecy which is vague enough to be useful, but not affect the cats who work within it. Curse has a prophecy about a cat breaking a inherited curse, but there is always real and believable stakes that she wont. Similarly, prophecies make up a lot of Warrior lore, so it's always fun to see how the individual writer plays with their structure. Even then, there are some stories where it would be unusual to have a prophecy. Butterflies and Hurricanes by ~Sapphire~ carries out a beautiful story without any prophecy that I can find. It goes in, tells a concise and believable story about a PoT AU, and gets out. So really, it just depends on the story an author wants to tell. 5. Any other thoughts regarding Warriors fanfics? They're beautiful pieces of writing, with low stakes to the author and the reader. They succeed really easily because they have an existing fan base and anyone can write them, from the best of the best to a writer just starting out. I enjoy reading them to see beautiful stories and encourage writers. After all, that's where a lot of them start out. I wouldn't be where I am today without fan fiction and the encouragement I got through the WFF. And also that! I want to mention that! We have a beautiful Fan Fiction board, with all sorts of writers and a wonderful community. You should go check them out next time you want to read a really good Warriors fic.

Do Warriors fan comics fall into the fan fiction realm? If so, some of my favorite dictions have been those. I canโt remember the name of one of them because itโs been a while, but one involved a RiverClan taking in a bunch of kittypets and the other Clans antagonizing then for it. Thereโs a non-binary character whoโs in a prominent role in it.

I remember reading that chapter and it leaving me wondering whether that Erin had intentionally made the part where Oakheart got on Bluestar's back as an "mhm yeah we know biology" sorta thing... finally, my thoughts were validated! Yeah, they weren't really subtle with that one.

1. As a writer I like how building blocky it is. By that I mean, they give you a pre-established sandbox to play with, which is good for new fic writers. This also means you can play around with a whole lot. You can make up your own clans separate from the ones we follow and create your own world in a sense.
2. I mean...I'm not a huge fan of high school or human AUs. It can be fine but I feel that sometimes it could be better off as its own work of fiction.
3. The chosen one. It's cool, but it would be cool to have the main character not be involved with being the chosen one. Also not a fan of love triangles. At this point they're so overdone it's exhausting.
4. I love a good prophecy. Emphasis on "good". I don't like prophecies that when a character hears them are just going to try to stop or try to induce. I like when they just...are.
5. Nope. That's it really.

I don't really read Warriors fanfiction, so I can't speak for most of these questions, but I definitely dislike the Human!AU. There are just a lot of elements in the books that don't convert well into a human story. While other fandoms can pull the AU off, Warriors isn't one of them, at least for me. Still, if you want your bipedal kittiesโฆI believe Redwall would work very well.
On another note, I hate love triangles ([/Mostly because I've had terrible luck with the ship I wanted to happen *cough* Seriously, Moon had way more chemistry with Winter *cough*s]). I also dislike the character-hated-by-everyone-just-bc trope.

1. I haven't read Warriors fanfics in a long while, but I tend to prefer fanfics that are AUs of the canon (note: if they are written well) or those that have unique premises that are actually explored within the fanfic. Sometimes the fanfictions can be written better than the actual books are at times. 2. I'll put this in a spoiler because I've seen a lot of crap I dislike on FFN- I don't hate human Warriors AUs. In fact, one of my favourite AUs is a medieval human AU of the first arc on FFN, and it's very well written for something that is on that site (then again the author is already writes well written fics on there but I digress). I just despise high school AUs - most if not all of them focus on the same characters, focus on the same ships, copy the same personalities as other hs AU fics, etc. I'm tired of reading about how Dovewing is such an asshole and how everyone pities Ivypool (I have seen this one plot so much on FFN it isn't funny), I'm tired about reading prankster Foxleap, I'm tired of a rehashed DF vs. StarClan plot, etc. Please do something original for once, it isn't hard. If there must be another hs AU, why can't it be something like of TPB (only saw one of these and it had a few chapters), TNP, AVoS, or DotC?? I just don't get the obsession with that one arc and hs AUs
But another thing that I dislike is when people write canon characters incredibly out of character. Like, I understand that it can be harder to write canonical characters in character at times (I'm one of those people who avoid writing canon characters because of this). But I don't see why it wouldn't hurt not to at least get an idea of how the character acts? It's even worse when the author manages to this to their own OCs.
Also when people make ridiculous events happen for no good reason. I get you want high stakes in your fanfic, but please, a volcanic eruption in the old forest is just stupid and people will call you out on it. Also when people mistake years with moons - (saying this because I remember an Into the Wild AU where it skipped years an Firestar was still an apprentice, and then in the part that transitioned to Fire and Ice he was just turned into a warrior and suddenly had kits??)
Then there's fanfics where it's an AU of canon and all the other characters' personalities and actions center around the main character, especially if it's an OC.
Another thing would be when people try to write love triangles and fail. I don't mind them, I've even written my own fair share of love triangles in my own stories. The problem is when they're written poorly, especially if another character is ruined so the other ship(s) seem better or when none of the ships are likable, with or without romance. For me at least, it doesn't matter if it's with canon characters or OCs, I still dislike it if done poorly. I remember a fanfic that seemed to handle this well with a 'if Larchkit lived' fanfic, involving a love triangle involving Larchkit, Sootfur, and Rainwhisker. Though of course this could be due to the fact that I generally dislike love triangles, it doesn't help that the second arc of WoF contributed to this Qinter, Winterwatcher, or Moonsingle should've happened, Moonbli and Winterwatcher were terrible but at least Winterwatcher had some development
And while on the topic of romance, terribly written romances. It's usually poorly developed if I end up hating it, and I hate it when the romance feels shoehorned in or it's just...bad. The former especially pisses me off, though I've seen this in published books as well. Leaf x Ivy from WoF, anyone? 3. I mentioned love triangles in 2, I'll just say that it's overused but it can be written well. It's just hardly ever written well in Warriors fanfic, imo. There's also the chosen one and forbidden romance, but again they can be written well. I've never written either that much in Warriors fanfiction, but I've written both in other works and can say that it can also be written well. 4. I don't mind prophecies as long as they are handled correctly. I've only done one Warriors fanfic with a prophecy, and that was it. I feel like people need to be more careful if they are writing an AU that involves changing a prophecy from the books, because I've seen more mistakes with this one than most. Some stories with them would work better without prophecies, though. 5. Not really, but I notice that especially on FFN the people on there seem to hate criticism lol. I remember reading a decent canon AU about Moonflower x Sunstar and the moment the person received criticism they screamed at the critic in PMs and blocked them. I know about this situation because a friend shared it on a forum on FFN, and honestly, while I see that we should be encouraging towards fanfic writers, they still need criticism whether they want it or not lol. Clearly the people I've seen writing fanfiction have creative ideas but simply telling them what they're doing good isn't really going to help, they need to be told what they can improve on. Not sure if this really applies here, but that's my thoughts on it. Of course this applies to fanfictions of all kinds but I've noticed this a lot within the Warriors fanfiction community on FFN so- (I wouldn't know what it's like on AO3 I don't go on there to read Warriors fanfics, I only go on there for Dragon Quest and Miitopia fanfics)

I love human AUs but tend to hate high school AUs as well. To me, there's a large difference and I hate that everyone says they hate human AUs when all they've seen of them are shitty high school AU fics on FFN. As for why OotS is so overrepresented in the high school AU genre... you're right. All of the HS AUs I've seen were either with Po3 or OotS characters, and I'm pretty sure it's because the characters in those arcs are actually around high school age, or are at least written to be. (I've always seen apprentices as ages 12 to 18, with the warrior ceremony being like a graduation of sorts). Firestar was only that age in the first book, and was an adult the rest of the series. Bramblestar and most of the TNP crew were adults when TNP started, and Squirrelpaw and Crowpaw were both in the later part of their apprenticeship. In Po3, however, they don't reach the cat equivalent of their graduation until book 5. In OotS, it's book 4. Combine that with the fact that a lot of fanfiction writers are in early high school themselves, and that they'd want to write about their favorite characters going through the same things they go through as an emotional outlet (Kinda like journaling, but through the lens of their favorite character), and it doesn't surprise me that we have an overflow of shitty HS AU fics.

I haven't read much fanfiction, but generally speaking, I don't really mind them, though one of the few fanfics I can say I've immensely enjoyed would be the Echoes of the War series.
And not that I hate it, but one trope I feel like is really overdone in general is the Chosen One trope. Oh, and love triangles, too. I also don't really like it whenever a canon character's personality is just completely rewritten for the sake of developing someone else (usually regarding a ship).

Echoes of the War is definitely one of my favorite Warriors fanfiction as well. It's enjoyable from start to end, the OCs are done well, the canon characters are fairly canon-compliant, and it expands on Warriors lore and worldbuilding. You can tell that the author put a tremendous effort into it over the course of five years.

In fact, one of my favourite AUs is a medieval human AU of the first arc on FFN, and it's very well written for something that is on that site (then again the author is already writes well written fics on there but I digress). Do you remember the name of the fanfic? I feel like I read it the other day, I just read can't remember the name of it.

I looked at the author's profile to check since I forgot and it's called Into the Fire. I believe the she's working on publishing the sequel and working on the third part of the series now, I still need to finish reading the first part.
