Flames
Chapter One
Air... I need air.
The thought consumed his mind until it was the only thing he could think of.
“Jacob! Get out of there! The building is going to collapse!” He heard the voice as if it were a whisper on the breeze, blown away from the storm that was his mind, never reaching it. He swerved around a mass of burning planks, but tripped when one caught his pant leg.
“So this is how I go?” Jacob thought aloud, his voice barely a whisper, “In a stupid bakery that I didn’t want to go to?”
His consciousness started to drift away. The last bit of eyesight he had was gone and his hearing was muffled and ringing. As he did, an orange light traveled to him. It landed on his head, and when it did, he felt at peace. He knew that this was supposed to happen, and that when it did, he would be safe.
“His vitals are… I don’t know how he… His lungs seem fine…” he heard the muffled noise of conversation, managing to pick up some of the words they seemed to be announcing to two others.
Jacob felt okay, but he couldn’t find the strength inside of him to wake up, nevermind move. Little by little though, he felt his strength return. Oddly enough, he seemed to see it return; as orange specks that exploded into a flames. They got more and more vivid until Jacob felt like he was back at the bakery. The embers floating around while the smoke swallowed his ability to see, a storm of charred planks falling around him. In fact, it got so unberable that he summoned the little bit of strength he had and opened his eyes.
Jacob heard multiple gasps, and after a moment, multiple people in the same off-white swarmed around as if they were bees, and he was their queen.
After a moment, he heard what seemed to be, “You’re awake!” but multiple shushes erupted in the small and barren room.
He wanted to tell them that, “Shushing that like doesn’t really help if you’re trying to be quiet,” but as Jacob opened his mouth, something felt off. For a second he thought that maybe in the fire he forgot how to speak. That couldn’t be it, though, because he couldn’t make a sound!
“It’s okay honey,” One lady in a gown said in a voice that made him shiver for a reason he wasn’t sure of, “You just lost your voice in the fire.” She chuckled for a moment, “All that smoke wasn’t good for your voicebox I suppose.” She chuckled again Don’t worry, honey. It’ll come back before long.”
Jacob still felt like something was wrong. Something that was wrong with her. He could feel himself slip away again, and the only thing he could think about was the lady. Something was wrong with her, and he knew.
I’m posting this from my phone as I don’t have a computer by me atm. Sorry if there is any mistakes.
