The following posts have been moved from a 3 year old thread. Since the discussion has picked up, I created a new topic. - Staff Edit, Sand - I'm pretty sure this thread is super old, but um i want explain a bit more. There are three types of synesthesia, grapheme color (Ideasthesia) mirror touch, and sensory synethstesia. I have mirror touch, and grapheme color. Basically when i see someone in pain, i immediatley feel it too, in the same spot, just probably less gruesome. I also see all numbers and letters in color, as well as when i hear music i see colors. the term synethstesia alone means that senses are connected.

Hi, sunchips ! Welcome to the forums! Just want you to know that it's against the rules to post on a thread that's more than a month old, but you're more than welcome to create a new thread with this topic!

I think that there was so much more they could've done with Yellowfang's power. I feel like they should've made the power more prominent and more of a hindrance to her life, which would've made her becoming a medicine cat because of it make much more sense. For example, Yellowfang may have had a small battle during her apprentice days when she couldn't control her powers that well and all the pain she sees from all the cats around her makes her collapse on the ground due to all that pain. Things like that that would drive her insane.

Also the scenario you described literally already happens in the book iirc. Also this is a necro'd thread.

I just don't remember yellowfangs power being that much of a problem.

It made no sense and added nothing to the story. Just another excuse to force a cat into the medicine role. :/

i accidentally clicked on “it’s great” but i meant to click “ehhhh”. i don’t like the ideas of powers tbh. i think they’re unnecessary.

I know the introduction of her power was just a quick reason to make her need to be a medicine cat for continuity sake. But why, can't we have more important medicine cat that chooses to become one out of choice? Because the way these so-called "powers" thwart the wishes and desires of these cats, the Clan system just looks so oppressive to these types of cats. Instead of finding out ways to help these cats manage these abilities they were born with in creative, unique ways to help their clanmates, they are instead forced into the medicine cat role because of some vague reasoning of "destiny" or because of their supposed better connection to StarClan, without even considering how it harms the cats, particularly young ones (look at Goosefeather), being forced into these narratives.

Oh, alright, since discussion seems to have started back up, I'll throw my two cents in.
I loved it. I love seeing cats with powers, they're all unique and I like seeing them either use them in clever ways or the story they have to tell.
And I actually think it was good in the story too. It's not immediately thrown at you, but it also doesn't keep it a mystery. I feel like it was a good factor in the plot as well.
I'm in the minority here, I'm aware.

I think the powers weren't pointless at all, in fact, they're pretty much the whole point of the SE. If Yellowfang didn't have powers, then she would have NEVER had become a medicine cat. If she had never become a medicine cat, then she and Raggedstar wouldn't have had to keep Brokenkit's parentage a secret, and A LOT of stuff that happened afterwards may not have ever happened. So, while it was cruel to give her a power like that, I don't think it's pointless at all.

I don't mind Yellowfang being an empath, I just don't think it was used well, which is why it came off as mostly unnecessary for me. Yellowfang could've easily become disillusioned with fighting after witnessing the death of a loved one or genuinely liked working with Sagewhisker and had to wait to become her apprentice for whatever reason and hardly anything would've changed in terms of the overall story.
