Why do you think Onestar was chosen to be the father of Darktail? They already ruined him far before that, and having him be Darktail's father affected the plot NONE, since WindClan wasn't even the main target. There was just like one fight with The Kin and WindClan, and that's it.
Wouldn't Scourge or Sol have made more sense?

Neither Scourge or Sol, imo would have made sense. I know a lot of people said it should have been Blackstar though.
Scourge and Sol, from what I've read, weren't really interested in things like romance. And Blackstar was a rogue for some time so he could have had kits outside the clan possibly. But when it comes to Onestar, he did have a liking towards kittypets, and a cowardly streak, so it's really not that surprising.

That's true about Onestar, I just wish they would have made more of it, like have him target WindClan instead of ShadowClan the most, and what not. It just feels like their father/son relationship wasn't utilized

He already knew Needletail, he was able to sway the apprentices who weren't being kept in line much anyways, and the sickness made them an easier target. Especially the last point, because of Onestar with holding herbs and letting cats die, Darktail was easily able to take advantage of that eventually.

It's kind of sad, that ShadowClan are always so EASILY swayed and manipulated. Even in Yellowfang's Secret, they were easily manipulated

They wanted to make Darktail related to someone alive and somewhat important for the dramatic reveal. Of the plot-relevant cats, Onestar is the best choice because he was already established to be a selfish idiot and secretly fathering Darktail wouldn't seem out of character.

Honestly, it's because the authors/editors are so attached to any long-running character that when they want to kill off that character, they have to suddenly make them the center of everything even if it derails the plot lines of the new characters and the whole arc. Onestar was going to get killed off and he's been around since the first book, so they had to make everything about Onestar now, and if killing a new villain way too early is what's necessary to give proper attention to a long-running nostalgia character, even one that no one even likes, then so be it.
