(This thread is just about normal Bramblestar, not the fake one running around rn.)
Bramblestar. Even though he's a major character, he really doesn't seem that popular in the fandom. I've always been neutral on him to be honest. I don't really like his relationship with Squirrelflight, but other than that he's never really bothered me. Then again, I didn't read his SE, AVOS or TBC yet. What are your thoughts on him?

I've never really liked him ever since the second half of TNP (PoT and TBC being exceptions). It was so stupid of him to actually trust Tigerstar at all even though he knew perfectly well what his father was capable of, and I just think his leadership has been fairly average so far. I will however never forgive him for agreeing to split Violetkit and Twigkit apart, and don't even get me started on how he behaves in SqH.
I'm also not a fan of his relationship with Squirrelflight, and the only time I really liked them together was in PoT.

I haven’t read SqH but generally I don’t mind him. During TNP, he was ok, but boring and stupidly oblivious to the fact his relatives were so obviously evil. He kept making excuses for himself so that he could keep seeing them too, whilst knowing what his father had done. He had no intention of listening to Squirrelflights advice anyways because he didn’t even consider it. That being said, (unpopular opinion) I prefer his chapters to Stormfur, who had less personality that Brambleclaw did. Brambleclaw was ambitious and bossy, Stormfur was.. crushing on Squirrelflight? He’s not a great leader and sometimes makes rash decisions, but overall I feel like it’s just because in comparison to the previous leader, Firestar, he’s not great. I like Squirrelflight but their relationship should’ve ended after Holly revealed the secret. Even BramblexJessy is better than the broken mess of a relationship they have left. In all honesty, I just want him to die so that we get Squirrelflight as leader.

I've never been a huge fan of Bramblestar because the way the books were trying to portray him didn't align with my own opinion of him
For example, I always thought it was weird that the books seemed to be saying that Brambleclaw would be a good deputy and that he was so loyal when he was training in the Dark Forest with his obviously evil relatives. This was especially true in Sunset when he was contemplating letting Firestar die in the trap and going through with Tigerstar's plan. 10 year old me thought he should have been demoted right there and thinking back on it, my mind hasn't changed much in that matter.
So overall, not a huge fan, not because of how he trained in the DF/treated Squirrelflight/acted as leader, but because of how the books tried to tell me how good/competent/loyal he was when the books didn't read that way to me.

While Squirrelflight has done wrong, she gets hate upon hate for her mistakes in canon and in the fandom. Bramblestar, however, gets a free pass for his behavior. It's quite infuriating to see the Erins force a so-called "troubled but good" character into our faces and down a path of glory when he has achieved very little. I'm glad the overall opinion of him now has waned but it took his quite questionable leadership decisions to do so. He wasn't that great and could have been written a lot better. The excuses for why he acted how he did are very.. gross in my opinion, as they're canon now but it isn't exactly out of character.

I personally think he gets too much hate, especially due to how he acted in Squirrelflight's Hope. How was he supposed to react when Squirrelflight went behind his back? Or when she lied to him about the Three being his kits?
However, there are some things I didn't like that the Erins made him do, such as separating Violetkit and Twigkit and seeing his father in the Dark Forest. It's like they forgot what he told Tigerstar as an apprentice. I feel a bit of pity for him because the Erins use his and Squirrelflight's relationship for drama that could be solved with communication.

Brambleclaw is an incompetent numpty who shouldn't ever have been near a position of power. The way the books treat Rowanstar as an inept leader, that's a far better description of Brambleclaw who is as toothless as a worm. And just as spineless at that. He always rolls over for others and lets them do whatever they please and in general I feel like he's responsible for the drastic fall in quality of the clans since Firestar's death.

bramblestar is a great example of the erins telling and not showing. they insist he's a natural born leader but everything he's done suggests otherwise. at least firestar had the right personality type to be a leader. firestar would have NEVER split twigkit and violetkit, or act the way bramblestar did in SQH

I love him, mostly because I started reading the series with TNP. He was the most interesting character to me at the time (young me thought Squirrelpaw was annoying, Crowpaw was mean, Stormfur was bland, Feathertail was a stereotype, and Tawnypelt was "a coward" for leaving her brother). His insecurities and ambitions made me like him instantly. I have a habit of latching onto a single character and obsessing over them, and Brambleclaw was the first time I noticed this happen. So, whenever I latch onto a character like that, I call them my "Brambleclaw" of the property.
I was excited when he became leader, but he didn't really do much. As a background character, his personality doesn't shine through as much anymore. Though, that seems pretty common with pre-Po3 protagonists to me. Most of what he did could have been handled better, or at least differently.
As unfortunate as it is, what I loved about him feels like fanfiction now (even if I still can't let him go).

Bramblestar really reads like a bad person in every situation he's in. If you take the books at face value, they tell you "Bramblestar Good, Squirrelflight annoying," but they don't put this into practice whatsoever. Then every interaction from that point on between them is negative, and almost always in a one-sided-from-Bramblestar sort of way.

Bramblepaw as a character peaked in The Darkest Hour. It was all downhill from there.

Bramblestar changes way too much as a character for me to like him. I'll start warming up, and then he's a different cat. His character in SqH was extremely different than say, Bramblestar's Storm.
