Sootpaw The day was just beginning to warm up, the sun rising up over the wide oaks that surrounded the DuskClan camp. The morning was still quiet, only a few birds singing and most of the clan cats were sharing tongues and preparing for the day's patrols. A few fox-lengths from the thorny entrance, which was often times hard to navigate, a small dark shape was slowly making it's way closer to camp. Upon closer inspection, one would find that the shape was actually a feline, though it was hard to see beneath all the scarlet. One trembling paw flew out in front of the other, filthy claws digging deep into the soft earth and pulling the small body forward. The young molly left a trail of blood in her wake, mixing with the dew that still painted the grass. Her breaths sawed in and out of her chest, sending sharp shocks of pain from her throat to her flanks. A desperate light green eye, the other having been swollen shut, locked on the entrance like a life line. Slowly but surely, the wounded cat managed to claw her way into the entrance. This was the tricky part but there wasn't a chance that she was going to give up now. Not that she didn't want to just collapse. Her body and heart ached - terribly. Still, for her mother she had to keep going. The molly forced her legs under her shoving her way through the thorns. A few snagged in her pelt but she just ignored them, pushing onward. A warm shaft of sunlight greeted her as she staggered into camp, shaking like a leaf in the wind. Unaware if anyone had seen her enter, she screamed out, "Greystar is dead!" This was all she managed to get out before her thin legs gave out beneath her and she fell towards the ground. Robinwind Robinwind’s ears perked up as the harsh sound of a young cats screams filled the camp. Greystar? Dead? How could that be? When? She moved forward quickly, coming to the side of the young feline. Sootpaw was in horrible condition. “What happened, Sootpaw?” Robinwind questioned, remaining calm. Any other panic might make things worse. Already she could hear her clanmates shifting and stirring nervously. The older warrior sat next to the apprentice, intent on hopefully keeping her conscious until the medicine cat could aid her.

Sootpaw Her soft green eyes lifted to gaze at a familiar face, Robinwind. Sorrow radiated out of her very being, overpowering the pain. "We were.... a-ambushed. MistClan," she managed to rasp, fighting to keep the light from dimming around her eyes. This felt like a terrible dream. Just this morning she was joking and chasing her mother through the forest. Sootpaw's eyes drifted closed, picturing the feathery grey pelt of Greystar as she darted through the bracken, her laugh loud and clear. They had just reached their southern border when her mother had stopped dead in her tracks. Without so much as a rustle of leaves, a large brown furred cat had pounced from behind a fern. Two more cats had followed but Sootpaw hadn't been able to get a good look at them. As an experienced apprentice, the young feline charged in to aid her mother but they were quickly overrun. Greystar had fallen. After murdering her mother the other cats retreated, which she might have found odd if she'd been thinking straight. A strangled cry of fear and grief suddenly broke the quiet shock. A large dark gray tabby forced himself forward, amber eyes locked on Sootpaw. He crouched down next to Robinwind, pressing a deep pink nose into the matted wet fur of his sister's cheek. "...Night...paw..?" the beaten down apprentice whispered, forcing her eyelids back open. Dipping his head once, Nightpaw rose back to his paws. "I'll go find the medicine cat," he spoke, half to Robinwind and half to himself. He felt numb mostly, as though he was a spectator in his own body.
((hello! c: sorry for the delay, holidays are really busy for me!))

Robinwind
"Ambushed..." Robinwind echoed. She kept her voice low. The last thing she wanted to do was spook this poor feline. Despite the growing heat of anger underneath her pelt she managed to keep a calm front. She watched as Nightpaw approached and nodded at her apprentice when he left to fetch the medicine cat. Robinwind quickly turned her attention back to Sootpaw. "Stay with me, Sootpaw. The medicine cat is coming soon. Can you tell us where you were ambushed?" she asked. Part of her felt bad for pressing the apprentice in the state she was currently in, but... It was better to learn this information now than risk it being forgotten. With the state Sootpaw was in, Robinwind almost hoped she would soon forget the undoubtedly awful events.

Sootpaw She watches the blurry shape of her brother fade from view and her eyelids grow even heavier than they had been previously. Sootpaw could barely draw air into her lungs due to the intense pain. Still, she wasn't one to give up or give in. Robinwind told her to stay and so she tried her best. The molly refused to let her eyes close though her vision was darkening around the edges. "N-Near... Mos.. Mossy... Stream," she finally forced out, her throat feeling like she had just swallowed sand. Sootpaw had never felt so broken in her life and yet all she could picture was her mother's lifeless body. A persistent voice in the back of her mind reminded her of her father, Smoketuft, and how sure she was that he would blame her. He'd always been a supportive, loving father but now her mother was dead and it was her fault. She didn't keep Greystar safe. StarClan, she hadn't even known that her mother was on her last life!
Nightpaw His paws were moving towards the Medicine Den on their own accord, taking him to get help for his litter mate. His mind was rushing a million different directions. Greystar had never told them that she was on her last life. Why? What was the purpose of keeping them all in the dark like that. What had his mother been thinking? Nightpaw ducked into the cave-like den, letting his eyes adjust to the slight gloom. His burning amber gaze slid over the herbs and empty nests, feeling lost as a leaf on the breeze. "Help, please. Sootpaw's been hurt... bad," he called, his voice breaking as the mental image of his sister's limp body.
Owlflight & Foxtalon Owlflight had stopped mid bite into a plump mouse when Sootpaw had staggered into camp. His fur fluffed up in alarm, claws digging deep into the soil. His breakfast disregarded, the tom watched as Robinwind and Nightpaw leaped into action. Part of him wanted to try and offer to help as well but didn't really know how to function anymore. Greystar was dead and MistClan was behind it? DuskClan and MistClan had been rivals for a long time and there had been many feuds but never had there been such a dishonorable attack. Owlflight turned his head sharply when movement came from his right. Their deputy stood from where he'd been sharing tongues with a few warriors. Foxtalon turned his icy blue gaze on Robinwind and Sootpaw, his face set into a sorrowful expression. He padded towards the two she-cats, his heart racing in his chest. "Did you see or recognize the attackers, Sootpaw?" he asked, his tone calm and as gentle as it ever had been. He shared a glance with Robinwind, unable to keep his eyes on the wounded apprentice for two long.
(( you can definitely have the medicine cat spot! and yes, they're open for anyone to claim. i wanted greystar to have more family but that's a lot of cats to play by myself. cx also, greystar only told the medicine cat that she was on her final life, no one else in the clan knew. ))

//ah awesome!! I'll take Smoketuft and Dovefur if you'd like, do you have personalities in mind for them? Also, here's a med cat ^^ Snakefang - A large and bulky, brown, tabby tom with amber eyes. (Robinwind's brother)
Snakefang
The large tom spun around from counting herbs when he heard the sudden rush of pawsteps enter his den. Nightpaw seemed... Beyond distressed. And he soon found out why. "Understood." Snakefang responded. He marched out of the Medicine Den, past the apprentice, quickly approaching a gathering group of cats. It was a safe assumption that that might be where Sootpaw was laying.
"Ah, Sootpaw. I'm sorry to see you like this. We'll get you fixed up real soon." Snakefang said, turning to the gathering group of cats. "Alright you lot, save all your questions. Give her a bit to rest." He looked at Robinwind with a nod and, with the help of the she-cat, hoisted Sootpaw up onto his back and carried her away to the Medicine Den.
Robinwind
Robinwind watched Snakefang walk away with the broken apprentice. She was fairly certain that, despite the magnitude of Sootpaw's wounds, the apprentice was in good paws. She turned her attention to Foxtalon and Owlfight. "She said they were ambushed by MistClan." she started. "By the Mossy Stream, I'm sure you heard. Should we send out a party, Foxtalon? At least to... Collect the body?" She didn't want to acknowledge the fact the leader they all knew for so long wasn't with them anymore, but it was necessary.

(( great! aside from Smoketuft being a good father, the personality is up to you ^^ also, i was thinking of making more claimable cats, simply because it's only the two of us at the moment and we can use them as background characters until someone claims them? that way if it does remain just us, it's not such a small clan? ))
Nightpaw The apprentice actually felt soothed a bit by Snakefang's quick, calm replies. He admired the other tom for being able to remain focused and sure under such pressure... then again, the medicine cat had yet to hear of Greystar's death. Memories of his mother washed over him, of all the moments they'd shared. Greystar and Smoketuft were older felines (though not elderly) and had always wanted a large family. Nightpaw and his sister had been their miracle litter, seeing as all the pregnancies before them had ended up failing. He was so lost in his sudden thoughts that he missed Snakefang slipping out of the den. His sister could be dying and he was too numb to even move.
Sootpaw Sootpaw was out of sorts and didn't even hear the deputy's question, struggling valiantly to stay conscious. Her heavy eyes slid closed on a blink and she found that she couldn't force them back open again. The scent of her clan-mates teased her as it faded in and out over the scent of her own blood. The ringing in her ears drowned out Snakefang's words and she startled a bit when they lifted her onto his back. Her eyes remained closed and she couldn't find the strength to move, so she hang limp from the medicine cat's back. The familiar scent of multiple herbs soothed her into unconsciousness at last, sure that whatever StarClan willed, she was safe now.
Foxtalon & Owlflight Foxtalon also turned to watch as Snakefang carried Sootpaw away, sending up a quick prayer to StarClan for a full recovery. He quietly listened to Robinwind, absorbing the information. MistClan attacked them near the boarder between the two clans, Mossy Stream. Rage simmered low in his gut, burning for a way to escape but he tried to keep a solid lid on it. The clan needed him to be strong and rational at the moment and he would do his best to be that for them. He could grieve later. "Yes, you're right. We also need to make sure these attackers have left our territory. I'll lead the patrol, Robinwind would you accompany me?" he asked more than commanded, seeing as the whole clan was in a state of grieving. He knew that the she-cat was level headed enough at the moment to go on patrol but peered around at the others, trying to find others to bring along.

//yea, making a couple more characters, even if just for the background, is probably a good idea ^^ also did you have anything specific in mind for the plot of this rp? if you don't want to post it here feel free to pm me
Snakefang
Snakefang walked into the Medicine Den and slowly lowered Sootpaw onto a mossy nest. "Nightpaw, you're still here. Good. I could use some help." He didn't have his own apprentice yet, but that was fine. He had quite some time to go before he needed to pass on his knowledge to someone younger. Or, he hoped so at least. "Please collect some cobwebs. They should be in the corner over there." He pointed with his tail to the location of the supplies while he himself took some herbs from the storage and began to grind them into a poultice. They would need quite a bit for what they were dealing with.
Robinwind
Robinwind's posture straightened a bit as she was offered to come along on the patrol. As if she needed to be asked to help hunt down whoever hurt her clan so gravely. "Foxtalon, I would like nothing more." she said, voice full of purpose. She trotted to the entrance of camp, turning around to face him. "Ah, suppose I should let you lead the way, huh boss?"

Nightpaw The tom startled as Snakefang returned to the den, nearly jumping right out of his fur. His bright amber eyes instantly fell on his sister and he repressed the urge to cry out. She was limp and lifeless, aside from the faint rise and fall of her flanks. He nodded quickly and then padded towards the corner. Nightpaw carefully collected the cobwebs, sure to wrap them snugly around his paw. He turned and hobbled back to his sister's side and rested his nose briefly against her cheek. Today was worse than any nightmare he'd ever experienced.
Foxtalon The deputy felt a wave of relief that Robinwind was ready to put her own grieving on hold to assist him. He spotted Lionfoot and Mistysong pushing through the crowd and they stopped at his side. "Thanks all of you. Till our patrol returns no other cats are to leave camp in groups less than three," he commanded, raising his voice to be heard over the quiet commotion. Foxtalon let out a startled chuckle, forcing a smile at Robinwind. The muscular tom fell into step a bit ahead of his patrol, leading the charge out of camp. He'd find those MistClan cats if they were still in their territory.
(( sorry they're so short! i am still trying to wake up ~ i do have a plot, i'll pm you my ideas ^^ also, sooo many cats. xD ))

Snakefang“I know things look grim, Nightpaw.” Snakefang started, in between chewing of some poultices. “But do not fret. Sootpaw will get better in no time.” He applied some of the poultice to a few of Sootpaw’s many wounds, covering them shortly after with the cobweb that Nightpaw had retrieved. “I suppose I should ask now… Greystar went out with Sootpaw, yes? She hasn’t returned, has she?” His tone changed suddenly from warm and comforting to something a little darker. He was aware of Greystar being on her last life, but… For it to be taken so suddenly with such little warning? Who could have expected that? RobinwindThe larger she-cat fell in pace behind the deputy. A lot of her was hoping there were no remaining cats on DuskClan territory. If they were willing to ambush an apprentice and a leader, who knows what else they might be capable of? Robinwind kept head down as she stalked forward. Quickly, their patrol reached the site of the crime and the pungent smell of MistClan washed over her.
DovefurDovefur’s head reeled as she stood at the outskirts of the group, processing the sudden onslaught of news. Her mother is dead and her younger sister could very well be next. Of course she trusted the medicine cat, but sometimes you do everything you can and still wind up dead. She had heard faintly that they were not to leave the camp without a group larger than three. That's fine, she sighed, thinking to herself. She instead settled to pacing around the fresh-kill pile, perhaps hoping to somehow outrun these haunting thoughts.

Nightpaw The dark gray tabby bristled initially at the calm, logical tone that Snakefang took. How could the medicine cat be so level-headed when Nightpaw's whole world seemed to be crumbling? The sight of the older tom placing herbs on Sootpaw's wounds took the aggression right out of him. His head ducked in sudden embarrassment and mumbled a quick apology, "Sorry Snakefang. You're right, she's gonna be okay." He had to believe that too, or he'd just fall apart. Nightpaw winced and busied himself by washing the blood out of his twin sister's fur. "Greystar was murdered," his reply was quiet and choked but he forced himself not to tremble.
Foxtalon Foxtalon snarled at the heavy scent of MistClan on their side of the stream. His icy blue eyes blazed with his inner fury, especially when they landed on the limp grey form of their leader. He watched as Mistysong rushed forward, leaning over Greystar's body in grief. Though his paws itched to do the same, he stormed towards the Mossy Stream and opened his mouth to take in the scents better. Their rival clan's border patrol had yet to be through here so three specific scents stuck out. There was something.... off about this whole situation but Foxtalon couldn't really focus on his tiny suspicions. "I can't believe MistClan would do such a thing," he growled to no one in particular.
Owlflight After Foxtalon, Robinwind, and their patrol had taken off the clan broke apart into smaller groups. As he got to his paws, his hazel gaze fluttered over Dovefur. Owlflight's heart went out to her and the rest of her family. He couldn't imagine the sorrow and anxiety they all were feeling. Forcing himself to his paws, the clumsy tom stumbled over to her, wanting to offer some sort of support. "I'm sorry for your loss, Dovefur. And Snakefang is a wonderful medicine cat, I-I'm sure Sootpaw will be fine," he mumbled, hating the stutter that came out in his voice. He'd had the nasty little habit since he was a young kit and though Owlflight had mostly outgrown it, there were still times where he slipped.

(Hope it's cool if I claim Rainclaw, Lionfoot and Galepaw?)
Rainclaw stares down at the body of her mother and tries to process everything. She growls digging her claws into the ground. She had half a mind to go find her mother's attacks and avenge her death. "We ought to march into their camp and demand justice!" Feelings of grief and anger intermingled within clouding her judgement.
(Btw did Honeyfern die in the ambush to or was that before?)

(( that's totally fine, i'll add your claims now! ^^ oh and Honeyfern died from greencough last leaf-bare, so before this. ))
Foxtalon "No, we must take time to grieve and figure this out," Foxtalon ordered, his voice rough. There is nothing this tom wanted more than to storm across the border and find the MistClan fox-hearts who had done this but as deputy he had a duty to his clan first. He turned back to his clan, away from the stream, and cast a sad glance at Greystar's body. "Robinwind and Rainclaw, you two will help me carry her body back to camp. Mistysong and Lionfoot, scout out the area to make sure the intruders don't remain. This is a track and report mission only, if you find a MistClan cat on our side of the border you head directly back to camp, understood?" he commanded, taking charge in the way he'd been trained to do through the moons. He may be a young tom but he had a strong head on his shoulders.

Robinwind
Robinwind listened to her deputy’s commands. Search and report. Those orders were easy enough to understand. But, she was well aware of how guilt could make someone fly off the handle. She hoped that Rainclaw was stronger than that.
Silently Robinwind moved towards Greystar. What an awful thing, to be killed like this, out of the blue with seemingly no reason. If MistClan was looking for a fight, they were about to get one. The gears in the senior warrior’s head were turning as she helped lift her old leader’s body and begin carrying it back to camp. While MistClan was undeniably their rival, something felt a bit off. Unable to place her strange feeling, Robinwind shook it off, deciding it was better not the crowd the air with nonsensical thoughts.

Rainclaw helped Robinwind by standing beside her and carrying some of the weight. She takes a deep breathe and exhales knowing she needed to control her anger. Justice would come sooner or later. She hoped that Greystar was watching over them in Starclan.

Foxtalon The broad shouldered red tom relaxed when none of the warriors appeared inclined to disagree with him. This was going to be a hard time for all of DuskClan, especially Rainclaw and her siblings. Heaving a silent sigh, Foxtalon padded forward, aiding the two she-cats in lifting Greystar’s body. “Let’s get her home,” he murmured quietly, unable to catch the former leader’s familiar scent over the blood and stench of MistClan. Pain lanced through his heart, at the thought of his mentor, his friend never sharing tongues with him again. He was a younger warrior and for some reason Greystar had chosen him to replace Fernwish not nine moons ago. Some had criticized her for her choice, but she’d never regretted her decision. She’d want him to be strong now. He wouldn’t let her down.

Robinwind
As Robinwind helped carry their deceased leader back to camp she couldn't help but think about how things would go from here. She gave a small nod of empathy to Rainclaw before turning to Foxtalon. "So. You ready to become a leader?" She was unsure if this was an okay question to ask at this moment, but the silence was deafening. Robinwind was never the type for sitting in silence. And, after all, Foxtalon had only just recently been made deputy, which in its own is an important role.
Dovefur
Doverfur jumped, not expecting any sort of being addressed among the chatter of the clan. "Oh! Owlflight. Sorry for the start." she said, apologizing for reasons she didn't know. "Thank you for the condolences... I'm sure Sootpaw will be fine too." Of course Sootpaw would be fine. She had to be. Dovefur inched closer to Owlflight, not wanting to feel alone. Initial shock aside, she was glad someone was taking the time to speak with her.

Rainclaw briefly glanced over at Foxtalon before looking straight ahead. That's right Foxtalon would become leader now. However, who would he pick to become the next deputy? A particular thought crosses her mind but she shakes her head to dispel it. He's a good cat. This was all Mistclan's fault!

(( i'm really sorry everyone, my friend had a family emergency and i had to take care of their animals at a house with no internet connection!
it was short notice but i'm sorry! ))
Foxtalon The closer they grew to the camp, the more he felt like he was going to be ill. Foxtalon hadn't been ready for this, not today, not this moon. Though he knew that Greystar was an older leader, he hadn't actually considered the idea of becoming leader. Greystar had already been in command when he was a kitten, he knew no other leader. How would he live up to that? Foxtalon jumped a little when Robinwind addressed him, forcing a small smile. "I am so not ready," he admitted quietly, not sure if he should voice his own worries. He had to be strong for the clan now, right? Suddenly he regretted telling the truth. "We're almost home," he murmured to Rainclaw, trying to offer some sort of comfort in this rough time.
Owlflight As a tom who'd been socially awkward and quiet his whole life, Owlflight felt a little out of his depth comforting Dovefur. He had lost his parents when he was a newly made apprentice, both of them gone at once. Owlflight remembered the sense of deep loss and the desperate feeling of being entirely along in the world. Dovefur had her father, litter mates, and younger siblings but he wondered if she felt the same. He didn't move away when she moved closer, instead he let their flanks brush, letting her know he was there. "You aren't alone," he whispered, unsure if that's what she needed to hear but wanting to let her know.

Dovefur
Dovefur sighed. "You're right." she said. "Sorry, I must seem pretty insensitive right now." She had never dealt with much loss until right now. She could only imagine how Owlflight had felt when he lost everything. If only one loss felt this bad... Dovefur shook her head. She couldn't think about it. That would only make things worse. At least Sootpaw as still alive. And it's not like their clan was going to be in shambles. Foxtalon was a perfectly capable cat. He would undoubtedly become a fantastic leader in Greystar's place.
