Why was Derek given one?
Romi was so fond of Derek and the others that it was obvious in every action she made towards them, but that thought had still crossed her mind as well. None of them were particularly magical, despite being part demon, and only Winter had any access to those abilities (if only selectively, since he had very little control). She didn’t know why a world renowned witch would be interested in inviting him—she didn’t even know why she was being invited, to be honest. It wasn’t like she had a reputation for being a brilliant or outstanding witch.
Examining the letter for anything she might have missed, she still found no sign of who it might be from. No name, only an address and a fancy little stamp in the corner. “I don’t really know. Actually, I don’t know why I’m being invited, either, but I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to be my guest,” she answered with a shrug of her shoulders. Romi would have to go shopping for something nice to wear and take Derek out as well—he would need a suit and she for a fact he didn’t have one. “I’ll ask Aries about it first, if we go. Should be safe. If the place is going to be filled with warlocks and witches, there shouldn’t be too much trouble. Well, there shouldn’t be any dangerous trouble.”

Derek stared at his letter, not sure what he was expecting to find. He as dumb to the world of witches and warlocks. If there was some hidden meaning on the page, he would be unable to decode it anyway. "Y-yeah, but, um..." he started to say, his words fading off as he felt himself starting to dissociate. "Um, w-what about m-my..." The boy's eyes stared off into space for a moment as the switch unfolded. He raised a hand to his face, rubbing his temple as one alter replaced another. Thirty seconds later, he was blinking rapidly a few times, taking a moment to take in his surroundings. And then he focused on Romi.
"We are not going anywhere near this," Winter stated plan and simple. "I don't know what this little invite is for, but whatever it is can be put on without our attendance. I'm not about to let you put us in danger by dragging us to."

Winter’s typical cold, unfriendly reaction no longer bothered Romi the way it once had. At some point, she had grown used to it, and knew that he was only being unkind to protect the others from harm. Didn’t mean she approved of the bad attitude, but it caused her very little irritation.
“We might not have much of a choice, Winter,” Romi pointed out without missing a beat, slowly growing accustomed to the drastic nature of their switches. Sometimes it happened with very little warning and she just needed to go with the flow. “A lot of older witches and warlocks are very easy to offend, so unless we want to cause a scene by rejecting the offer, we should consider it. And before you say that I can go without you, I’ll go ahead and tell you that I’m not leaving you alone. Besides, if Aries got an invite, he’s not going to let you get hurt. Neither am I, for that matter.”

”We have traditions, Winter. Breaking tradition and offending people means that they could very well curse us into another plane of existence and the council wouldn’t bat an eyelash,” Romi explained and crossed her arms, though she understood his cautious nature and hesitation. She didn’t know what to expect, either, but she didn’t think there would be any immediate dangers at a party. Other than there being a large crowd, of course, which could make Derek uncomfortable. “You should bother going because you were invited and they know you’re part demon. Do you know what the council usually does to rogue demons? Hunts them down to prevent accidents, that’s what.”
Truthfully, it was something she had been worrying about since day one of meeting the man. She knew the rules and laws of her people like the back of her hand, taught to follow and uphold them, even if she didn’t necessarily agree.
“You’re not my familiar and that’s the only time it’s acceptable to let a demon go free. If you were, then I would say we could just write an apology letter and skip it. Since you’re not and it’s too serious of a commitment to even consider right now, we should go,” she added, running a hand tiredly through her hair.

“I know they’re not your traditions, but I hate to say that most of my people aren’t all that understanding.” Romi knew that it wasn’t right to force such traditions on anyone who didn’t want to follow them, but there was very little she could do about it. The council controlled all magical aspects of the world, not just the actions of warlocks and witches. Every creature had to answer to their laws and regulations. They were at the top of the pyramid when it came to power. “Everyone follows the council’s rules. Demons, witches, fairies, you name it. They hold all the power in the world and it doesn’t matter if you want to be a part of it or not—you’ve got demon blood and that’s all they care about.”
Winter brought up a good point, something else that had trouble her for a while, though she couldn’t find an explanation.
“It’s possible he’s using some sort of magic to conceal himself so that he can hide. Or that he’s gotten help from someone in the underground,” she said with a shrug. “I think that whatever the reason is, it’s probably illegal and against the law. Which means he hasn’t drawn enough attention to himself to be a big enough problem for them to deal with.”

Winter scowled at what Romi told him. They didn't have a choice in the matter. It was do as they were told, or be punished for not even doing anything wrong. So about like normal. "I don't like this," he growled. "Things are getting to complicated. What happens if Sam were to see all of this? He doesn't need to be around you witches. None of us do."
"Of course, he hasn't. He's not an idiot," the boy muttered. Their father was a monster, yes, but he wasn't a careless one. Perhaps that was the only reason he was putting them through college: to put on the appearance as if he was nothing more than human. It was part of his efforts to conceal himself in plain sight, all the while he got away with whatever he wanted. He was careful in every aspect, even when it came to hiding the signs of his beatings.

It was a complicated, unfair system of law and rule. Those who were older held all the power, while those who were younger had no choice but to follow. Creatures outside of the witch and warlock community were treated as inferior, seen as barely human and easily replaceable. Romi didn’t agree with it, as many of her generation didn’t, but the consequences for speaking up were too high to risk.
“You think I don’t know how complicated it is? You think I don’t worry about Sam and Derek? That I don’t worry about you?” Romi said through a sigh and rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on and not knowing how to avoid all of the problems that were being laid out in front of her. “It’s better that you’re with me—I’m not letting your dad abuse you anymore—but I’m still trying to figure out how to fix all of these problems. The council doesn’t care what happens to you, but if you step out of line, they’ll take the opportunity to be cruel. I’ll try to see what I can do about the party, but I can’t make any promises.”

“Winter—I care about you, believe it or not,” Romi said, slightly exasperated, but her tone was mostly fond. He could be a grumpy pain in the side, but she was quickly growing used to his cold attitude and it was pretty expected for him to be this difficult. She didn’t dare approach him or try to make any physical contact, knowing that he was the only one who disliked it, and instead gave him a tiny smile. “All of you. I won’t let anyone hurt you, your dad or my people. I meant it when I said I would keep you safe and I don’t plan on ever going back on my word. Just...try to put a little trust in me? I know it’s hard for you and I don’t blame you, but I really want to be your friend, and I want you to know that I’m here for you.”

Ouch. If that didn’t sting a little, Romi would lying. Still, she brushed off his words more easily than she would have a week ago. He had every right to feel the way that he did and she couldn’t be judgmental of his opinions. That didn’t mean she would stand back and let him walk out of her life like he had never existed, but she was willing to let him say what he wanted to. She might never change his mindset and that was okay—as long as he knew that she would be there for him.
“You don’t have to stick with me,” she replied with a shrug, playing it off as calmly as she could. It was hard, when all she really wanted was to give him a hug. That wouldn’t go over very well, so she set about lying out candles and lighting them instead, to give herself a little better light to see by. “But I’m not just a means to an end. I’ll always be your friend, whether you stay with me or not. Do you want any hot chocolate? I think I could use a cup.”
Without waiting for his answer, she set about boiling a pot of milk and cream, placing two empty mugs on the counter.
“I’ve been meaning to talk to you about your dad, anyway. We have the right materials to get rid of him—plenty of salt, holy water and silver—but Aries said that having the supplies isn’t enough. We’re going to need a strong spell to banish him, since demons don’t really die the way other creatures do,” she said as she turned over her shoulder to look at him.

Part of Winter's bad mood was the fact of his restless nerves and the fact that the dorm was far too dark for his liking. He was wired up, anxious, and needing a way to get rid of it. The shadows were pressing in around him, and he felt the effort it was taking to breath. He wasn't panicking, at least not yet, but he wasn't having a fun time. There was nothing he could really do to help ease himself, so he was more or less lashing out at Romi because, well, he could.
He watched as she set about lighting candles. It irritated him how slow she was being about it. Something in him long to set the wicks blazing, creating flames that would light the entire dorm. He managed to keep himself from doing that, however. It would be bad if he burned the dorm down because of his fear of the dark. "And what spell would that happen to be?" he asked. No, he didn't like he needed to rely on her for help with his plans. Yes, he had been slightly swayed to continue the conversation at the mention of hot chocolate. "Will it be able to keep him from coming back?"

“A very difficult, very complicated and sort of, technically, off limits spell that requires a lot of preparation,” Romi answered as she fought down a smile, knowing that the mention of hot chocolate had enticed him just enough to keep up the conversation. Thank goodness he loved sweets so much. “I’m not officially allowed to use such high level magic. But yes, it will be able to keep him from coming back. It’s the most powerful vanishing spell that I can use—it’s usually reserved for the elite members of the council’s guard. They use it when they need to get rid of rogue demons.”
Pouring the hot mixture of milk and cream into the two mugs, she added her own special blend of cocoa, melted chocolate and cinnamon, before stirring them. To hers she placed one marshmallow on top, but went all out with Winter’s, giving his whipped cream, multiple marshmallows and a little cookie straw. As she picked her drink up, she slid Winter’s across the counter and over to him. “I mean, I’m capable of performing a spell like it, but I’m not authorized. I’m too young to have permission—I think you have to be at least a hundred and I’m only nineteen, so.”

Winter stood there with arms folded as he listened to her. He was glad that the spell would be able to keep their father from returning, but there was another concern that arose. "Does it only lock on to one demon?" he asked. "Or will it have an effect on anything close by?" It was a given that he would be near his father while this was happening. He knew that in order to make it work, he would have to be bait, so to speak, and trap their father. If the spell had no boundaries to it, there was a good chance he would be putting the entire system in more harm than he would ever dare to do.
There was a moment of hesitation before he reached out and took the mug. He would never admit it, but he actually really liked the hot chocolate she made. It was probably the only reason why he tolerated the woman at this point and keeping him sane. Since he wasn't able to leave, he couldn't go get his normal sweets from one of the smaller cafes on campus he liked to visit. Having Romi making him hot chocolate and other things was pacifying him enough to keep him from just making a break for it and taking his chances on the street. "Won't you bring unwanted attention to yourself if you cast it then?" he asked, taking a big sip of his drink. "Should Aries cast it?"

Romi stirred her drink and leaned back onto the counter with one elbow propped on its surface, thinking for a moment before she answered. “It’s a very specific spell. We’ll be using some part of your dad—hair or clothing, most likely—so the spell will be tied to him alone. It won’t affect you at all.” It was a legitimate worry for Winter to be concerned about being banished by accident along with his dad. “Which is part of the reason we haven’t started yet, since getting any is going to be difficult.”
The little details were the reason this whole ordeal was going to be so difficult to accomplish and probably the reason why the consequences might be bad, even if their actions were justified. “Possibly, but I’m willing to take that risk. There’s a chance they won’t notice and I don’t mind playing a guessing game with it if it means getting rid of your dad for good,” she sighed and took a sip. “I would say that Aries should cast it, but...he can’t. That’s why he’s telling you to do it yourself. Aries and the council haven’t ever seen eye to eye and… Well, I don’t know exactly what happened, but Aries isn’t allowed to use that kind of magic anymore.”

"How long does it take to prepare the spell?" Winter asked. If it took a while, then his idea was no good. However, if it took just a few minutes, then perhaps he might be able to acquire the needed materials. Sure, it would mean putting his system in harms way, but if he could banish the monster for good, then it would be worth it, right? He would maintain control of the body, maybe. He could convince Derek and Sam to stay hidden in their inner world until the whole ordeal was over. He was sure they would be happy to do so.
He wasn't entirely sure why she would be taking such a huge risk like this. If the penalties are as severe as she claimed, then why risk it? Why be shunned from the council and her whole livelihood just for the sake of one demon? The answer had already been stated many times by the woman, but it was an answer Winter just simply refused to believe. A part of him might have known that which could have been why he didn't ask her why she was going to do it. "Why would he be banned from using magic that banishes demons? Isn't that a good thing to do?"

“Well, if we wait a few days before we do it, it’ll probably only take a few minutes. The waning moon is in three days, so that’ll probably be the best time to do it. Banishing and protective spells are more powerful then.” The phases of the moon were important when it came to spell casting, but most importantly when it came to complicated spells that required time and preparation. “I only need enough time to get your dad to get close enough for me to recite the spell. I almost have it memorized—I’ve never had to use such a long spell before and I really don’t want to find out what might happen if I get part of it wrong.”
Winter might not believe her reasoning for putting her future as a witch and her life on the line, but she didn’t expect him to understand right away. Maybe he would never truly understand that she couldn’t just abandon him when he needed her help. That was okay. She didn’t need his thanks or gratitude—she just needed him to be safe and happy. To have a good home and a good future. Even if he wound up leaving her in the dust—it would hurt, of course it would—she would still be relieved to know he was okay.
“Technically, it is a good thing, but the council decided that he lost his privilege to use higher level magic. Like I said, I don’t really know what happened. They just… don’t trust him anymore, I guess,” she said with a small shrug, not knowing how else to explain it. Aries didn’t talk about what happened, refused to speak about the details, and shut down every attempt at questioning it. She thought that it might have something to do with Gil—just based on a hunch—but she couldn’t prove it. “It happened like a hundred years ago, so there’s no way I could ever find out. That was way before I was born.”

"Then is there a way you can disguise your presence?" Winter asked. He wasn't entirely sure when he started to pick up on it, but during the days spent in her dorm room, the protector had begun to sense the witch and where she was less by sight and sound, but more of a... he wasn't sure what it was called. Energy? Aura? Whatever the term, he could always tell if Romi was home or not, even if she was doing her best to stay quiet in times such as when the body was sleeping. It was the same kind of deal whenever he felt their father's presence. Romi's just not not cold and menacing. He didn't know how to describe it, but it was much different than what he was used to. He asked this because if he was starting to sense her then he had no doubt his father would be able to do the same.
To her retelling of information, Winter shrugged. It wasn't like it really concerned him one way or the other so he didn't bother following the topic any further. "And you want to repeat his mistake, why?" he asked, not really expected her to agree that she was repeating any mistakes at all.

The same way that Winter could sense Romi’s presence, no matter how quiet she tried to be, was the same way that she could sense his. She had noticed that, strangely, each alter had their own unique sort of aura. Instinctively, she started to compare them more to seasons than anything else. Sam’s was light and warm—it reminded her of sunlight or a warm summer day. Oppositely, Winter’s was colder and more crisp, like a rainy autumn day. Not quite welcoming, but still nice. Derek, of course, was more gentle; soft and timid, delicate like freshly bloomed flowers. Although she had always been able to sense the man’s presence, it was growing easier to distinguish between the three different ones, to the point where she wondered if she would one day be better able to predict their alter changes before they happened.
“I can disguise my presence if I focus hard enough. It’s called a glamour—all supernatural creatures can do it. Takes some practice, but it comes naturally after a while,” she answered as she drained the last of her hot chocolate and placed the cup into the sink. “I’ll make sure to stay on the sidelines so your dad doesn’t notice me there. All I need is time, really. I can’t be interrupted while I’m reciting the spell or it won’t work.”
Repeat his mistake.
The phrase hit her a little harder than she would have expected it to—she didn’t know why, but it made her skin go cold. “To help you,” was the first thing that came to mind and Romi knew she needed to be honest. “The council is too old fashioned and corrupt. There’s no justice in their laws. I’m willing to break tradition if it means helping you and the others.”

“If that’s what you want me to do, Winter, I’ll do it. It’s as good a plan as any and I’m willing to let you make the planning decisions. I’ll just be there to cast the spell and you know your dad best,” Romi said amiably, her smile slight and warm. He might not like her or trust her very much, but that wouldn’t stop her from being helpful or friendly. “Tell me where the best place to hide is and I’ll make sure your dad never knows I’m there.”
She didn’t notice how dark it really was until Winter pointed it out and she blinked, looking around. “Other than a flashlight and candles? I don’t think so.” However, as she said this, she waved one hand in the air in front of her. Focused on the space, the air above the palm of her hand. Slowly but surely, an orb of light flickered into existence, becoming as clear and bright as a lightbulb. “I didn’t do it earlier because I know you really don’t like magic.”
Almost like hitting a balloon, she tapped the orb and sent it slowly floating upwards, where it hovered just below the ceiling. The biggest issue with the power being off was that there was no more heating and she could feel the cold creeping into the room. From the couch, she snagged the blanket from before, and held it out to Winter. “It’s a little cold. You should cover up.”

There it was, Winter’s growing habit of acting like he needed to take care of himself and not accept help from others when he felt like he didn’t need it. No matter how kind the gesture was, she knew that he would prefer to keep to himself unless absolutely necessary. She wished she could get him to open up—but it would take a lot of time and effort, if only he would allow her to do so.
“It’s going to get really cold without the electricity on,” Romi Warner, but she didn’t move any closer, and simply placed the blanket back onto the couch. It was getting late and she was feeling tired, as she headed to her bed and flopped down onto it. “There are plenty of spare blankets if you need more. And you can keep the light on—it won’t bother me and it’ll stay in even while I’m asleep.”

"I'll be fine," Winter repeated. He had suffer through worse cold than what the room was currently at. If it did get to a point where he knew it would bother one of the others, then he would wrap up. For now, he was fine. As Romi settled onto her bed, he was reminded of the lingering exhaustion he shared. The nap Derek had taken helped some, but the switch had used a decent amount, as well as left him with a small headache. Sleep would be the best thing to have at the moment.
With a nod only, the boy sat back down on the couch, leaning back against the pillows. He didn't feel like following Romi's lead and heading to bed yet. He would just hang out on the couch, sort some things through while he could. Then he might head to bed. His eyes roamed up to the floating orb of light. Where had this thing been when he needed it before? If only there was a way he could do that. Perhaps there was, but he knew too little about his own abilities to really know for sure.

(( Hope this is okay! ))
Romi found it difficult to fall asleep, though she was certainly tired enough to. Her mind was too busy, thoughts swirling around her head and keeping her awake. After a while, she did manage to fall asleep, though it was a restless sleep. Her dreams were strange—flashes of images, bits of noise and color, nothing that made complete sense. She thought she saw the ocean, endless and blue and clear, but it might have been the sky. That’s how it was for the next few days approaching the waning moon, the day they were meant to banish the boy’s father. Romi was no prophetic witch—she didn’t have the power to predict the future or write down great prophecies. Very few held that kind of ability.
But dreams were important to all witches and warlocks. Sometimes they meant something. She just didn’t know what hers were trying to tell her, if anything.
It was late evening and still as rainy as the day before. The sun didn’t break through the thick clouds and somehow, the air felt even colder, despite her thick coat. Perhaps it was the anticipation of what was to come or perhaps she was just being paranoid, but for once in her life, she felt a little nervous about using her own magic. She knew the spell, had all the right materials, but her heart was beating so fast. Sitting in her car with the heat blaring and only the sound of the rain against the glass to break the silence. Thinking about they were about to do—what they needed to do—was stressful in a way nothing had ever been. Not that it would make her back down, but she did have to steady her nerves with a subtle, deep breath.
“So we have everything we need,” she broke the tense silence and looked over at Winter. “I know the spell and where to hide, so I won’t make a sound until you give me the signal.”
Another deep breath and she turned to Winter with a tiny smile, hit with the sudden urge to give him a good luck hug—which she didn’t, because she knew he wouldn’t be very welcoming of it. “Let’s teach your father a lesson.”

(It looks fine to me! Also, I kind of want the plan to kind of go haywire, because I really want to have the demon come out. XD That is, only if you're okay with it. I don't want to ruin anything you got planned.)
Winter ended up falling asleep on the couch. Under the glow of the magic light, he eventually pulled the blanket over him and stretched out, making himself as comfortable as he could. It was easier to fall asleep than he realized, and he wasn't complaining. The sleep would be much needed, especially for the day that they were to have in the morning.
He hadn't expected to make their move the next morning, however, he didn't complain. The sooner they got this done, the better. So he had spent the morning telling Romi all he could about their father's routines and the layout of their home. The best place for her to hide, which was actually the small pantry in the kitchen, would be the only place his father wouldn't go checking. Not when he saw that they were back. The signal they had prepared was simple enough. To signal that it was time to cast the spell, Winter would start asking his father questions, mainly about his heritage, hoping to buy enough time for Romi to enter whatever room they were in. If he was going to risk his life, might as well get some kind of information while he was at it. It was risky because the man never liked it when they started questioning him. He just hoped that he would be able to think of good questions to maybe get him to humor him. If he could just get a minute or two of pause before he did anything, maybe it would work out okay.
Now, they were sitting in her car, parked a block away from his house. He wouldn't let her park closer, otherwise their father might notice something was wrong. The heat was stifling, but he didn't tell her to turn it down. It was helping him to focus on something other than his growing anxiety for this whole ordeal. If things went well, he would finally have his system free of torment and pain. If things went bad, well, he could only hope death was fast and swift. When Romi spoke, he turned his eyes to her, no emotion written anywhere on his face.
"Things may go a lot differently than you expect," he told her, not even going to bother putting it in any round about ways. "I'm putting the system in serious danger, and I know that if this messes up, we're as good as dead. If that's the case, you get out of there. Take what you know to the Council or whatever if you want to get revenge, but don't go through with it on your own. I don't need your brother killing me twice for getting you hurt."

(( Lmao that’s exactly what I was thinking! Glad we’re on the same track. I was thinking that the spell would go wrong and maybe Romi would jump out to try to help, leading to a bunch of action and drama. ))
“Aries can be mad if he wants to be, Winter. He doesn’t get to decide what I do and he’ll get over it,” Romi said as she crossed her arms and turned to face Winter, her face stern and serious. “I’ve already said it once—if things go wrong, I am not going to abandon you to be killed or worse by your father. I’m here to help you and that means that when things go bad, I’ll figure out a way to fix it. You don’t trust me and that’s okay, but I keep my promises.” She wouldn’t run away and leave him behind, wouldn’t just flee like a cold hearted coward. None of these boys deserved that kind of betrayal.
Letting out a slow breath through her nose, she steadied her nerves and her worries. “I’m hoping it doesn’t go that way, but if it does, I’ll still have your back. We’re in this together until the problem gets solved. Derek, Sam and you—I’m here for you three.”
Winter wouldn’t believe her now, either, but she had to tell him the truth. As Romi stepped out of the car, she knew that this wouldn’t be easy. If things went well, it would still be difficult and if things went badly, they could both end up seriously injured. She could only hope they would get lucky.

(That will actually work well with what I had in mind. XD Perhaps the spell goes wrong, and by the time Winter realizes this, it's too late. He's being drug off to the basement. Now, to get the demon to come out, I was thinking of having liquid silver being injected into his body. Does that sound okay, or too much?)
In the end, there was nothing that Winter could do about her actions. If she chose to stay and get herself killed in attempts of fighting off his father alone, then that was her problem. It couldn't be said that he had made her do it. The boy had given her orders to leave, to get back up, to save herself. He wouldn't be at fault for anything that happened to her. A part of him did feel bad for putting Derek's friend in danger. Derek would be crushed if anything were to happen to her. That is, if they somehow survived this thing if it all went south.
He let her words die in the silence as they both got out of the car. I'm here for you. It was odd having someone there with him, walking to his house. Whenever he would return, the protector tried to become as isolated as possible, urging Derek and Sam as far into their inner world as they would get so they wouldn't accidentally catch sight of anything. Even on the days were Derek was co-conscious with him, he still knew that whatever he face, he faced alone. Derek wasn't much for fighting. The other boy was so beaten down at this point, he would simply obey any order in hopes of self-preservation. Now, here was Romi, willing and able and joining him into the lair of the beast where only he had known its true terrors. As much as he didn't trust her, he couldn't deny the fact that having her there made this a little easier.
