(She just constantly gives him sweets. Nothing else, lol.)
Derek nodded. The answer made sense. If they could lie forever, than they must have a lot of things they do to pass that kind of time. It seems like playing tricks on humans was just the most popular one that was common knowledge. He finished the pastry in a couple of bites and was just about to take a sip of his drink when Romi told him to look at something. There, in her hand, was the smallest humanoid figure he had ever seen. He smiled as he heard to bell-like sound of its voice. "He sounds like Tinker Bell!" he commented, perhaps influenced by the oncoming six-year old the pixie was bringing forward. So much for staying in the background like they had promised. Cautiously, he held up his hand, palm up, and brought it leveled with Romi's. He had no idea if the pixie would bother moving to his hand. He probably wouldn't. However, the urge to hold the little creature was incredibly strong and he had to try.

[[ She just bakes an endless amounts of sweets to win him over ]]
Regardless of what Derek thought might happen, the pixie was more than willing to switch one hand for another and stepped his way across their fingers. Perched himself in the space between Derek’s thumb and index finger, as though he had every right to be there. Which, in the minds of many fae, they did. His grin was minuscule but joyful—immensely pleased with the attention he was receiving. Hands on his hips, looking incredibly and hilariously proud of himself. As he stood there, it drew in quite the crowd. A tiny cloud of like-minded pixies, some female and some male. One girl with curly red hair and dragonfly wings, another boy with short blond hair and fuzzy, white-spotted wings.
They landed lightly on Derek’s outstretched palm, milled about curiously. Watched the man with tiny but intelligent eyes. After a few moments, though, they lost interest. With such short attention spans and vain personalities, it was to be expected. One by one, they zipped off into the air, to find themselves something better to do.
All but one. The blond boy with the fuzzy wings remained. He sat himself upon Derek’s hand and showed no signs of moving, nestled where the sleeve of his suit met his wrist.
“Aw,” Romi cooed, half teasing but all sweet. “I think he’s taken a liking to you. What’s your name?”
The pixie, as it would stand, turned his nose up Romi in favor of Derek. She could practically see the little devil’s moon-bright eyes as he gazed up at Derek like a man struck by pure beauty.

[[ Omg that is too funny. He just starts calling her by every fiction witch’s name. Like the Wicked Witch of the West and whatnot. ]]
The wiry pixie grinned at the sound of Derek’s voice and, of course, answered him. His voice was very quiet, but not necessarily timid. Just soft, considering his size, and Romi had to lean forward to hear him. “You may call me Oleander,” he tittered, all blushing smiles. With the introduction on his end out of the way, Oleander launched immediately into poetry-levels of compliments about Derek. “You have a face more beautiful than a thousand suns, it radiates with such immense light that it outshines even the brightest stars. Dear beauty, you are my sun, my stars and my moon, from henceforth and forevermore.”
Oh lord.
Romi didn’t want to be rude—that would only make the pixie angry—but she had to force herself not to laugh. While it was sweet that Oleander was smitten with Derek and really, who wouldn’t be, she couldn’t see his feelings being reciprocated.

[[ I’m laughing way too hard at the mental image of Winter just baseball pitching this poor pixie into oblivion. xD ]]
Romi nearly lost her composure at the sight of Derek’s lost, pleading glance for help. She had to take a deep breath to keep herself from laughing, gave Oleander the kindest smile she could. “He’s flattered by your compliments, Oleander. Truly,” she insisted, as politely as she could. It was the only way to reject the advances of a member of the fairy court without stirring up trouble. “But he’s not here to socialize, I’m afraid. We were just about to leave. I’m positive there are plenty of other beautiful guests for you to get to know.”
The rejection drained every ounce of cheer out of the pixie’s stance. His fluffy wings drooped and he looked forlornly up at Derek’s face with big, sad blue eyes. Oleander sighed, melodramatic as many of the fair folk were doomed to be. They lived and breathed for the theatrical moments in life. Clearly, this two-inch tall man was no exception. With a graceful bow and a slight sniffle, he bid Derek farewell, though not before shooting Romi a burning glare.
“Well, I’ve made an enemy,” she snickered, far too entertained to be upset about it. “I mean, he wasn’t wrong. You are very handsome, Derek.”

(XD Begone foul creature! XD
Or, more accurately the internal dialogue of the system:
Derek: Can we...
Winter: No.
Derek: Please?
Winter: We are not keeping the pixie.
Derek: But look at it! It's so cute!
Winter: That's what Sam's for. Now get rid of it before he sees it.
Sam: Fluffy wings!!! It has fluffy wings!!!
Winter: Goddammit.)
Immediately, Derek felt horrible at the look of utter disappointment on the pixie's face. He was about to give in and tell Oleander he could stay, but he had already bowed and taken his leave. "Now I feel bad,"he muttered, watching him fly off. Then looked to Romi. "I-I don't think that's true." Maybe he was physically pleasing to look at, but his self image was distorted to the point where, even if he identified most with the body, he had trouble thinking positive things about it in that light. Besides, he was more accustomed to seeing his face covered in bruises more than anything.

[[ Poor Winter is outnumbered lmao ]]
Romi did feel a little bad, but she had an inkling that Oleander would make a reappearance one way or another. Pixies were more forgiving than most, but very determined, and extremely self-centered. If this one deemed Derek interesting enough, he would likely be back to try to woo him once more. “Don’t feel bad, sugar. He only did that so I would feel guilty. That’s one of the many tricks they use all the time,” she promised and knew that it was the truth. Likely, Oleander was perfectly fine and just playing it up.
The way Derek put himself down, however, was not a trick or a joke. She pursed her lips and lifted her hand to place her palm against his cheek. “Sugar, you are handsome. You’re handsome and sweet and wonderful. Don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise.”

[[ The pixie has joined the adventuring party. ]]
Derek’s flinch didn’t hurt her feelings, but rather reminded her that they weren’t quite to that point yet. They had made progress—tremendous progress—but it was slow going and, as she often told herself, these things took time. Derek had spent all his life with a man that didn’t think twice about striking him. No matter how genuine Romi’s words and actions were, she couldn’t erase years of trauma. Not to say that she wouldn’t give it her best shot to treat him the way he deserved, but rather that she needed to be more aware of his limits and boundaries.
“Sorry, sugar,” she apologized with a smile and brushed a hand through his hair instead. Each and every time she overstepped a boundary these days, she would apologize, as it was only polite. She didn’t do it very often, but she always felt a little sick when she did, and did everything she could to remember not to do it again. “Let’s find the others, okay?”
The path she took through the garden was one that she hoped would lead her towards her brother and his familiar. Those she asked of his whereabouts—he was a hard man not to notice, given his height—said he had gone in this particular direction. Yet when she and Derek came to a stop, Aries and Gil were nowhere in sight, and she placed her hands on her hips.
On every side, they were boxed in by large, neatly trimmed hedges spotted with little white flowers. A fountain sat in the middle of the clearing, jets of water pushed into the air and plummeting their way back down into the pool. The glittering lights above turned each spray of water a different color. Red, gold, orange—warm hues of autumn. With a huff, she took a seat at the fountain’s edge, and rested her elbow on her knee. “You’d think it would be easy to find him, but no, he always chooses the strangest places to hide out.”

(That pixie is going to have such a rough time. XD)
Her apology, while not needed for she didn't do anything wrong, did go towards helping his recovery process. Every little kind word and amended action demonstrated how most regular people were supposed to act towards each other. Healthy interactions, not the one sided, pain filled ones that made up his childhood. He nodded in response to the suggestion of finding Aries and Gil, ready to go home, back to the safety of the dorm. The boy followed her on their quest, taking the directions given by other party goers. Eventually, they left the noise and crowds behind as they entered the gardens. Here, walled in by bushes and flowers, the rest of the world faded away. A peaceful silence could be found here, interrupted only by the sound of the water falling from the fountain. "C-can you not call him?" Derek asked. Surely he had his cell phone on him, didn't he?

[[ lol he really is ]]
“I’m not getting any cell reception out here,” Romi answered with a sigh, though she went ahead and checked her phone once more. No internet access, no cell bars. No way to contact Aries. Fantastic. Not that she expected anything different. Cordelia, as an older witch, likely didn’t have any use for phones or the internet. Unfortunately for them, at any rate. She leaned back on her hands and studied the dark sky. The stars were hard to see, but it must have been getting late, and she was already beginning to feel tired. These days, she was often tired pretty earlier on. Maybe it was her injuries, maybe it was just after being so stressed. Either way, she could use a nap.
She would have been content to wait there until the party ended, they somehow found her brother or they decided to leave on their own. Really, anything would have been preferable to what happened next.
The fountain at her back began to bubble. Softly at first, nothing out of the ordinary, then louder. Like the water was boiling. Romi turned her head to look at it. Mistake number one. The water drew her in with the gravitational force of a black hole. Instinctively, her hand shot out to ground herself, and latched onto the closest thing nearby: Derek. Mistake number two.
When they hit the water, she expected to be unpleasantly soaked and irritated, not to go straight through the water and continue downward. The world turned black around them, but not dark, because she could still see Derek right next to her. They couldn’t be underwater, either, because she could still breathe, though she couldn’t speak. It was like floating, endlessly downward. Not too terrifying.
Until she hit solid ground. Head first, roughly enough to put way too much pressure on her injured cheek, and she cried out in pain before she even thought to look around.

Well, there goes his suggestions. Derek didn't know how they were going to find Aries and Gil without the use of phones. Of course, they could always start calling out their names in hope they were around to hear them. He was just about to suggest it when something else caught hi is eye. Looking behind Romi, he noticed that the water was starting to bubble weirdly. "Um, R-Romi," he started, but that was as much as he got out before things went bad.
He could only watch helplessly as the water seemed to pull the woman backwards. Her hand found his arm, and sure enough, he was then falling with her. If he had the capability to cry out, he would have. However, shock kept any sounds from forming. That is, until they hit the ground. Like Romi, he mostly fell of his face and shoulder, causing a grunt of pain to escape his throat.

Romi let out a soft groan of pain and lifted her head away from the ground, which was rather soft, for all extents and purposes. Better than landing on solid stone, she supposed glumly. As she took in their surroundings, she was baffled by the predicament they seemed to have found themselves in. The trees rose high above their heads, the canopy so thick that it blocked the night sky from view. Tall, wild undergrowth curled around the trunks of the trees. Untouched and unbothered by humans, far from society. No buildings in sight, though it was rather dark, and she couldn’t see too far in front of herself. Her first instinct was to go to Derek, though, and she did just that. Pushed herself up and hurried over to his side, waving her hand to conjure up a floating orb of light, which flooded the clearing with soft, warm light.
“Derek? Are you okay, sugar?” Poor man couldn’t get a break and she sincerely hoped that he hadn’t been hurt in the fall, but she decided to check him over anyway. Helped up to his feet. Checked for cuts, bruises, anything—didn’t matter how small. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t know that was going to happen.”

Good question.
“I...don’t know,” Romi answered and shifted her gaze to the area around them. Nothing but trees and foliage in sight. No houses, no people. The soft sounds of nighttime critters filled her ears, the buzzing of insects and the chittering of nocturnal birds. It wasn’t chilly like she expected it to be, but rather mildly warm and perhaps a bit muggy. Once she was certain that Derek was relatively okay and didn’t need healing, she looped her arm through his and rested her hand on his elbow. Well, at least she knew for sure that they were outside, but that was as far as her knowledge of the current situation went. “We fell through a portal, that’s for sure. Why there was one in the fountain, I have no clue. Seems a bit odd to me.”

“They could have. Yeah, we should look for them. If they’re here we can just go straight home,” Romi said as she began to walk, no clear path in sight. It was too hard to walk through the soft earth in heels, though, so she stopped to take them off with a huff. Held Derek’s arm with one hand and her heels in the other. Somehow, she doubted that her brother was here, but she didn’t want to worry Derek by saying so. As they walked, with her small orb of light guiding the way, she began to seriously doubt that anyone else was here.
Actually, she was beginning to doubt they were anywhere near the party.
The forest seemed endless. Too dense to see through, no hints of civilization. It only took ten minutes of walking for her to stop, bite her lip in worry, and turn back to Derek. “I’m going to try to make a portal to take us back home,” she decided, uncomfortable with the idea of staying out here for long. As she dropped her heels onto the ground and approached the closest flat surface—a rather wide tree trunk—and realized within minutes that their situation was a bit worse than she first expected.
She couldn’t make a portal. Though she tried, knew that she did everything right, it didn’t work. The tree remained nothing more than that—a tree. It wasn’t her magic that was the issue, because if that were the case, she wouldn’t have been able to make a light in the first place. Something was preventing them from leaving.
“I think we might be stuck here,” she sighed, worried and confused, but unwilling to give in to fear. “We probably need to walk back. Guess a magic shortcut isn’t an option.”

Putting aside the fact that they were possible lost, the forest was really pretty. Perhaps it was because he hadn't had a chance to see many places before now, but Derek found himself drawn into the details of the woods around them as they walked. The light Romi made illuminated enough for him to get a general idea of the layout of the ground, the spacing between the trees, and what was rocks and hat was dense underbrush too thick for anything to walk through. Of course, he would have preferred to see it in the daylight, but he wasn't sharing the same sinking feeling Romi did as they walked. That was, of course, until she found out that she couldn't make a portal home herself.
"W-walk back? To where? T-the spot we landed?" Derek asked. They had been walking for so long that he wasn't even sure if he knew where that spot was. He could have sworn they had been walking in a straight line the whole time, but now, with the prospect of being lost actually voiced, he was having doubts.

[[ Feel free to have Derek touch the pretty flowers! It’ll probably be a not very nice experience, but I have a feeling Sam might like shiny flowers no matter what Romi says lol. ]]
Now that Derek said it out loud, Romi wasn’t sure if walking back to the original spot they’d landed was a good idea. The portal they’d fallen through had been one-way—she would have seen or felt it, if it was otherwise. At this point, she wasn’t even sure if they could retrace their steps. While Derek was certainly right about the forest being lush and beautiful, most of it looked quite the same, and she was afraid to admit that they might be more lost than she had first anticipated. “No, walk back to the party. At least, I thought we would be able to. Now, I’m not so sure. I don’t think we’re anywhere close to it,” she admitted softly and trudged forward, hand on his arm. The place was so quiet, so untouched and undiscovered.
She would have continued to blindly push onward if it hadn’t been for the light trickling from up ahead. Soft and pink, leaking through the cracks in the leaves and vines. Slowly, she put her own light out, bathing them in half-darkness, so that it was easier to follow the trail of light. There, in the clearing up ahead, was a patch of softly glowing flowers. Rosey pink in color, with petals shaped like half-crescents.
Romi had no clue what they were, had never seen them before, but she could feel it—the magic, pouring off of them in waves. A tidal wave, a hurricane, of warmth that flooded her chest. Much as her instincts wanted her to close the space, to pluck one from the ground, her brain told her, no, that’s a bad idea. Her arm curled itself in front of Derek’s torso, to stop him from getting any closer, just in case he might also have an urge to do so.
“Don’t touch them,” Romi whispered, warily. In the magical world, pretty things were often the most deadly. Lured in unexpecting victims with beauty and warmth, only to end their life prematurely.

(Oh, poor Sam won't be able to resist the flowers. XD)
The look on his face turned slightly panicked. Romi was admitting they were lost. If she didn't know how to get back to the party, then what would they do? Sure, there had been those whom they asked about Aries and Gil's location at the party, but there was a good chance that by the time anyone knew they were missing, those guest could already be gone. No one would know where they had gone.
He was about to ask about what they were going to do when the light vanished. He whimpered involuntary as the light faded, stepping back a bit and glancing about around them. The boy could still make out where Romi was, but that didn't mean he was completely okay with it. When she started walking, he hesitated, unsure. Things had already gotten strange, and Winter was having a fit on the inside, trying tell him to stay put until they could Switch. However, he didn't want to be left alone. So, he quickly followed after Romi, noticing for the first time the glow of pink light.
It was safe to say that the small clearing of glowing blossoms hadn't been what he was expecting to find. Pretty as it was, it made him disassociate very badly, only not with Winter. Bright, shiny, or cute things tended to trigger a Switch with Sam more than anything. On top of that, the pull of the magic hit him about the same time. Suddenly, that patch of flowers seemed like the safest place on Earth. Warm and soft, Derek felt himself longing to just stretch out among the petals and forget the rest of the world existed. He blinked a couple of time, Sam ever closer. It took a moment's pause before he could ask, "Why?"

[[ poor sweet baby, he just likes cute and shiny things. i feel bad that he’s gonna get a scare of a lifetime ]]
Please don’t let Sam front, Romi prayed as she knelt down to examine the flowers from a somewhat safe distance. Hands on her knees, kept them placed firmly away, just in case she might find herself straying. Not that she didn’t love Sam or want to speak to him—because of course she did, he was wonderful and sweet—but he was naive. Young-minded and easily impressed by things that were both pretty and shiny, a category which these flowers clearly fell into. It was the ultimate trap for someone as sweet and impressionable as him. Worst of all, she doubted he wouldn’t even stop to think about the consequences.
“They might be dangerous. I’ve never seen anything like this,” she answered, as honestly as she could. Better to be blunt and upfront about the potential threat they might pose. The potion-making side of her brain wanted to take a few and study them more intensely, to find out what made them tick. What gave them their magic? It was so rare for plants to display this level of magical intensity and those that did were hard to find in nature, destroyed by human civilization to the point of near extinction, and located in remote areas of the world. Mostly, they were grown in greenhouses by talented garden witches or warlocks. “They’re fascinating. Probably dangerous, though.”
She was so preoccupied with taking out her cellphone and snapping a couple pictures—for later research, she desperately wanted to know the name of this odd species—that she took her eyes off Derek. Only for a second, but that was really all it took for a situation to go badly wrong.

Her answer to his question went unheard. While she stooped down to study the plants, their mind had already begun the process of a Switch. It was more of a normal one this time, lasting thirty seconds or so as the brain re-calibrated itself. There was a moment of pause, eyes blinking and roaming around to take in the space around them. When everything had settled, all Sam knew was that there were glowing flowers before him.
"Miss Romi, look!" Sam cried, a grin splitting his face as he darted forward. Running in the body was always weird. The arms and legs were just too long, so he felt like he was floundering around more than he was. One good thing about having long legs, though, was that he was much faster. He reached the edge of the flowers and quickly bent down to pick up a handful. "They're glowing!" he cried, turning towards the witch and holding out his newly acquired bouquet to her while. "I've never seen a glowing flower before."

Romi had just tucked her phone away when she heard it: the distinctive, sweet-toned voice of Sam calling her name. Her heart sank immediately and, though she turned to grab his arm, he was already far beyond her reach. Bent down, with a handful of flowers in his grasp, holding them out to her. It was the sweetest gift in the world, and if it hadn’t been for the worry and horror that overtook her chest, she would have been flattered. Slowly, she murmured, “Sam, sugar, I need you to put those—”
The words were ripped right out of the air, as the ground started to tremble beneath their feet. Blades of grass split apart, mud and rock thrashed about like a living creature—the flowers, where they had grown in one particular patch, were beginning to rise up from the ground. A hill was forming from the earth, knocking the two of them back with the force of its quaking.
She couldn’t keep her balance, fell and hit the ground hard. Tried to find Derek, grasped his arm, clutched it, and let out a startled gasp. The hill crashed over them like a wave of dirt, sent rocks and clumps of dirt raining above her head. “Sam—” Her cry was lost in the noise, but it didn’t matter—she pulled him tight against herself, tried to shield him from the flying debris. Curled her body over his, despite being the smaller of the two.

Sam's smile faltered a little as he saw her expression. She wasn't happy with the flowers? Why? They were pretty. Maybe she just hadn't seen them properly! Figuring that was it, the boy straightened up and was about to take the bunch of flowers for Romi to look at closely. However, he did not get far when the ground began to tremble. From beneath them, the ground pitched and moved, creating a hill where there was once flat ground. He felt Romi grab him, and the next moment, he was pinned to the ground, Romi doing her best to shield him, and debris falling everywhere. The sounds were terrible. The shaking of the ground terrified him. "Romi!" he cried, arms wrapped tightly around his head. All thoughts of the flowers were replaced by the need of the scary situation to be over.

“It’s okay, sh, I know it’s scary. We’ll be okay.”
Romi’s words were lost in the cacophony of shifting earth, of roots ripping from dirt, but she didn’t stop. For as long as the quaking lasted, she continued to murmur soft words of comfort. Held him close, brushed her hand along his shoulder blades and back. Waited until the chaos faded into an eerie calm to turn her head toward the once peaceful field of flowers.
A creature unlike any she had ever seen loomed tall above their heads. Covered in clumps of earth, the glowing flowers lined its spine line like a poor imitation of fur or spikes. It had a face that was partially indistinguishable, hidden behind layers of old dirt. Buried beneath the earth for ages, perhaps centuries, without being bothered by the likes of mortals. The creature stood on four legs, with massive paws bigger than her body by a long shot.
Pink, glowing eyes gazed down at her, a mouth filled with large, flat teeth opened as it spoke in a voice that was a far cry from a human’s. Unimaginably deep, that made her picture and image of boulders rolling down a mountain.
“Who tramples upon my resting ground and awakes me from my slumber?”

Her words made little impact as the world was seeming to destroy itself. With his eyes shut tightly, even his hands covering his ears couldn't block out the sounds of trees pulling out of the ground, of rocks crashing to the forest floor beside them. Every now and then, he felt something his his legs or sides, wherever Romi couldn't protect with her own body. Each time, he whimpered and tried to curl himself into a tighter ball.
For what lasted like an eternity, peace restored itself. Sam dared to open his eyes. At least they were alive. That was something. Warily, he glanced at the world, or what he could see from his position. There was something standing over them, but he could only make out the legs of the creature. It's voice rumbled to the point where he felt it tremble through his body. "I'm sorry," the boy said, not sure if he was speaking to Rom in or to the beast they had awakened.

“We didn’t come here intentionally. We’re really sorry, we didn’t mean to wake you up,” Romi spoke up, and defended both Sam and herself at once. They hadn’t come here with the express purpose of waking up this ancient creature nor had they any plans to be here in the first place. Sam pulled those flowers up willingly, but he never would have known that this would happen. She didn’t even know what would happen and she grew up in a world of magic. “We got lost in the forest.”
The creature’s rumble sounded suspiciously like a laugh. It shook the ground with its force, chattered her teeth. “Lost? This is not a place where one often finds themselves lost,” it said, frustratingly vague. “The spirits here whisper your names in reverence.”
Sam was shaking so badly, the poor thing, and Romi rubbed his back as she hugged him tightly to her chest. As curious as she was about what the creature spoke of—and how everyone seemed to know more about them than they knew about themselves—her first concern was always going to be Sam and the others. She sat down on the ground, heedless of the dirt that stained her nice dress, and pulled him into a comforting embrace. “It’s okay, sugar. Sh, it’s okay. We’re safe, I promise.

(I'm looking at it on Mobil view right now, and it's not too hard to read. I don't know about desktop, bit I'm sure it'll be fine. ^^ )
Sam stayed where he was, curled up on the ground and fighting back tears. Winter was trying to take back control, but it was a slow process. They had already had one immediate shift. That had taken a toll on them. The amount of energy for that was more than one would think. It also seemed that when someone was purposefully trying to switch, the harder it was. Sam might be scared, but so far harm hadn't befallen him. So the need for Winter to front wasn't so great. He just tucked himself into Romi's embrace and stared up at the beast towering over them. It looked like something out of a fairy tale. Covered in grass, dirt, and flowers. It looked more earthly than any other creature they'd ever seen.

(( Alrighty, thanks! Sometimes I just like to get a second opinion. ))
The creature was vastly different than anything Romi had ever encountered. She couldn’t have even guessed what species it belonged to and wouldn’t have thought that it would be sentient, either. Yet here it was, speaking to them in a voice that could only be described as playful and wise. Even so, the fact that it was gigantic was certainly a source of distress for poor Sam.
“Sam,” the creature rumbled and slowly dipped its head, to look at the man almost eye to eye. “Be not afraid, young man. The witch speaks the truth. I would not dream of harming you.”
