My cat Ellie was minding her own business, when my other cat Barry stared her down, and chomped down on her neck, like without a warning growl or anything. I'm used to seeing Barry constantly hissing and growling at Tony, but she's never really showed any signs of aggression towards Ellie. I don't know, she could have just been playing, but I've never seen her play like that before, it was a bit shocking.

i don't have much experience with cats, so take this with a grain of salt, but usually predatory animals will give lots of signs (hiss, growls, false strikes, etc). People tend to get confused with dogs for that reason, because they'll take barking or growls as direct aggression when in reality the dog is anxious/feeling threatened. It's when they stare unblinkingly, go stiff straight with no movement, that you have to watch out for. So that might look the same in cats too.

Hmmm. How did Ellie react? I usually don't intervene if both my cats are quiet when they (play)fight, but once the hissing and spitting starts I separate them. Did Barry draw blood? If so that might be worrying, but if not then idk. I mean I've never seen mine do such a dramatic chomp before either lol. Maybe Barry was just experimenting?

Saint AmbrosefThat's how Barry was right before she sprang on Ellie and chomped her neck ~Absol~Wolf~Scribe~After Barry bit her, Ellie ran off, Barry chased her, and then Ellie laid down on her back with all her legs up. She didn't draw blood, I'm not TOO worried about it, because Ellie seems like she can hold her own, and Barry is smaller than her.

Someone correct me if im wrong but doesnt rolling to show belly a sign of submission in cats? I think so, but it could also be so she could grab her with all four legs, but since Ellie is so chill, I'd imagine she was just playing submissively

The body language to look out for with cats is if their ears are back, fur on their back standing up and tail fluffing up. growling or hissing as well AND tail lashing. Cat's lash their tails back and forth when agitated as opposed to dogs who do it to show they are happy.
From the sounds of it they were just playing.

Cats are crazy sometimes lol. Not to mention I think even though showing the belly can be a sign of submission, they can also do this more as a means of baiting each other into playfighting.
