~Run Free~
Runningwind is born with the roaring wind around his paws and his head in the clouds, opposite to him, his sister is born firmly stuck in the earth, with a silver tongue and a heart of gold.
He’s around three moons old when his playmates from the nursery disappear in the middle of the night, his mother tells him and his sister that a fox got them and forbids them from leaving the nursery without her,
“where do you think kits stay in StarClan if they die?” he asks his sister a day after the disappearance a half sad, half curious expression on his face
“I think they getta do whatever they want to do” she replies matter-of-factly “there wild”
“Wild…” he says to himself quietly, tasting the word on tongue, he likes the sound of that.
When finally reaches six moons of age, he’s given Bluefur as a mentor.
He remembers how before she had her kits she used to watch him and his sister so White-eye could get a break.
She was sweet and soft then and while she is still kind, the softness seems to have melted away into the fire of ambition that is Bluefur.
She’s a good mentor though and when he and his sister gain their warrior names, he can hear her voice chanting “Runningwind, Mousefur” proudly along the rest of the clan.
That night he and Mousefur are sitting the traditional vigil and when he can finally start to see the dawn start to break in the distance he nudges her frantically with a paw and motions for her to follow, he leads her to the highest rock in Sunningrocks and points at the water.
The light of the rising sun reflects off the water, setting it ablaze with shades of red, orange and yellow.
She smiles and twines her tail with his, and together they sit there, brother and sister watching the sun rise over the water together
He’s fifteen moons old when he first falls paw over tail for someone.
He had never meant to, but you can only be sent on so many border patrols with someone before you start to notice how the sun catches their fur and how they look so happy when they climb to the very top of a tree.
But he sees Redtail curling up with Brindleface one evening and at that moment he decides that love isn’t quite his style.
He’s twenty two moons old, when a kittypet with a pelt like fire joins the Clan, and sets everything afire.
“Kits and apprentices” he complains to Longtail one evening in the warriors den “have about as much sense as headless rabbits”
“You were an apprentice once” Longtail interjects, a smug look in his eyes “are you finally admitting you have no sense”
He gives the tabby a exaggerated sigh before pouncing on his back and pushing the young warrior to the ground.
It’s Greenleaf in the forest and the sun is radiating harshly down not a breeze in sight.
He, Mousefur and his sister’s apprentice Thornpaw are walking briskly along the border that connects ThunderClan and Shadowclan when out of nowhere a large shadows lashes out and buries its claws in his throat.
His sister watches horrified as Tigerclaw stands over the corpse of her brother before running away.
He was only twenty eight moons old.
Fireheart stands before him, his life a contrast against the starry landscape, he dips his head and gives him a life, he never had an apprentice but he figures this is what it feels like.
This is not the last time he will stand in front of the newly crowned Firestar.
It’s the final battle between light and dark and he’s dashing through the forest, the wind at his paws and the blood red sky above him “Runningwind! are you still you still fast on your paws?” Firestar asks him.
He grins “of course”
(this is a tribute to my favourite character and son, I love him and I wish he got more screen time)
