The thing is, with his shadows, they felt like a part of him. Granted, that could be expected since he could phase into them, but it meant he saw more as a shadow beneath the man's hand than as a human across the room. There was a reason Kai didn't leave his house much, why he wasn't noticed unless he made himself noticed. And he didn't mind that. He didn't like people noticing him unless it was on his own terms. Kai raised an eyebrow, the wolf puppet disappearing into a normal silhouette. Interesting. The man approached him, and inside his pulse spiked, his own fight or flight response said unhappy male approaching you, again, you need to leave, but he was powerful now and sat back, relaxed. Sipped more of his coffee. He hated how ingrained this was, how he needed to force it down, but once you learn something you never truly forget.
Instead of answering the comment, Kai looked up and said, "You're nervous. You're not good at covering it up." It was blunt and maybe not necessary, but he didn't hide anymore. Saying what he thought was brave and intimidating. He knew his ability to read others had that effect, though unfortunately it was pure skill, not magic.
"I'm curious." And he was. It would be interesting, and he wanted to find out what all this was for his own knowledge and to possibly put up for sale in the future.

Elwyn watched the briefcase as it was handed to Emilien. It was ordinary and leather, just like any briefcase a businessman would probably have. She patiently observed the man open the case, and nodded when she saw the cash. It made sense and was a smart move. Some money now, some earned on the job, and the rest delivered after she was done. She kept quiet as EmilienΒ spoke, listening to his reasoning. Elwyn smiled and nodded. Anyone could have been chosen, but she was chosen because she was one of the best, if not the best. Despite her...dislike for the factions, she couldn't help but feel a little pride that a leader of one would know her work. She hated them, but was happy to be known as a skilled enough thief for bigger jobs.
"Half now and half later. That's fair." Elwyn carefully grabbed the money and distributed it into her jacket pockets. The green jacket had plenty, but it was diffcult to keep it from bulging awkwardly. Whenever she left, she'd had to be careful not to draw too much attention. In fact having that much money on her was foolish. However, she could manage. She always did. The thief watched as the man reached for a necklace with a blue stone. It was actually kind of pretty, but the woman didn't trust it. She listened to her employer explain what the thing was and bobbed her head.
"Ah, so it's a bit of a tracking device then?" Now she really didn't trust the thing. She would have to go to one of her more barren apartments, one she was going to use for her current job. Assuming they hadn't been following her already, which they probably had, the best she could do was bring the necklace to a place she didn't care about much. The Fouriner brother seemed to have thought about everything. The rest, which infiltration, a disguise, and an entirely new alias, was up to her. Hair and eye color could be changed with dye and contacts. She knew how to change her gait, mannerisms, and voice. It would be just like any other job, but longer. She could do it, she always could.

"Well, yes and no," he said, closing the case. "Only when you press on it. It'll be soft when you do, and that is when it becomes like a GPS. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to find you." Sometimes he felt a little void of emotion, always knowing what to expect and how to react. Made life a little dull in the moment, though he did get the surprises beforehand--granted, that ruined the whole idea of a surprise. It was fine, it was life.
"Assuming you are alright were you currently reside, it would be best to keep you housed there. If not, we can arrange something, but they will see that you moved recently and that might tip them off." It was reasonable--Ver Tahesh was paranoid, like any cult. They were also the most violent, ruled with fear and loyalty. Spades kept loyalty in their ranks, but not out of worship of a leader; instead, out of gratefulness for each other. Out of protection. Ver Tahesh... is a different kind of family, and one with an iron fist. It made them very good at what they did.
Γmilien wanted their drug trade.

Samar had wiled away the time during Ezra's absence mostly by zoning out on the couch, fading away from reality as she had when previously in the lounge, losing track of time as her mind wandered somewhere else, but she would be unable to tell anyone exactly where it had gone if someone was to ask. That was how it always was when she got herself into this state, simply existing and unable to exactly pinpoint what she was thinking about as she jumped from one train of thought to another. Over the course of his absence Samar's headache began to wane, the throbbing not so intense and some of the pain pulled back from behind her eyes, settling mostly into her forehead. It made everything that much more bearable and some of the sharpness came back into her thoughts.
As some lucidity returned to where she could function without extreme effort got up to investigate her surroundings. Veiwing the apartment with more of a clear head, her initial assessment of the place remained the same. While didn't doubt Ezra's abilties, the apartment didn't feel threatening in anyway. Or not enough to be a concern, at least. She nosed through the rest of the apartment, peeking into the rooms and bathroom, taking in everything in. She was safe here, she decided, to the extent that one could be safe in a stranger's home.
Once she'd finished snooping, satisfied with what she'd seen, Samar made her way back to the front room. Settling back to how she had been originally on the couch as she heard the door unlock. She watched him as he came in, eye following his movements as he went about making coffee. She would have noted more of his change in attitude had she been in a more receptive state earlier, but as it was, she didn't quite pick up on the change. "How was it?" she asked.

( collided do you want to do something Jeanne and Preyderi?) (Sure. Any ideas there? Sheβd be opposed to meeting Fourniers except as bodyguard/protector, but she might not know him. Probably wouldnβt know him. But since her power is sort of infamous, he might recognize her in a painting. If only because most people donβt stay standing with her kind of injuries, or something about her just clicks, or she ends up in a scene heβs already seen. In which case, if she didnβt know who he was, sheβd probably just be fascinated by his so much less gruesome ability. Painting? Vague ideas of the future? Seemingly harmless accountant? The alarm bells probably wouldnβt go off as quickly. I could also work on a Fournier character if only because tbh itβs always fun to have characters that foil each other. If Iβm remembering that term right. Basically theyβd probably be a terrifying menace, but they also expects to be paid regularly, maybe by accountant? Just fiddling around with what exactly. OC Vincent is a sort of obvious one, because heβs literally venomous and the Fourniers would love that. Poor Preydrei might be less happy to ever see them but thatβs sort of fun too. Also possible: Both?)

So in the case of Jeanne, he could be just doing some activity like I just mentioned and they meet that way. Alternatively he could just start a conversation with her. Now whether or not he knows her is something else. I think he's probably heard of her(and maybe has painted something about her, I'll have to think about it)due to the nature of her powers and what they're generally used for. Yes, I believe the term would be a foil character in this case. When it comes to Vincent, it could be really fun to have a kinder character interacting with a more mean-spirited one. I do enjoy those kind of interactions, because they can be fun(as stated before)to see. Personally, I like the potential ideas that can come from both ideas. Elwyn nodded. Even if it wasn't a proper tracker, she didn't exactly trust the necklace. Besides that, why take the risk? She wasn't brainless enough to do just that. Pausing briefly, she glanced out the window continuing to keep track of where they were. Though she had let herself relax some, she still wanted to keep track of where they were. Though it was clear Γmilien only wanted to talk to her about the job and seemed to have no ulterior motives, she didn't want to chance it. A caught thief was one who didn't pay attention. And a caught thief was usually a dead one. After quick glance out the window, she let let herself keep focus on the Fouriner.
"I already have a place," the woman answered quickly. "It's around Ashburn Park, which you know they own. I've had it for at least a few months, so I shouldn't raise suspicion." But you probably already knew that, she thought as she eyed the man. When the job was done she'd abandon it and get a new place, away from that area for her safety. She'd be sure to try and keep it hidden, though who knows who the Fouriners had in their pockets. Meeting with one of the Fouriners had made her more aware and after the meeting, she would be even more suspicious of others. She shook her head and pushed the thought aside. Now wasn't the time.
"I'll need help creating a new identity. A license, identification card, and the like." Elwyn had a guy who usually helped her with that kind of thing. However it would be too risky to go to him. Instead, as much as it pained her, she would have to use the Fouriners' resources. They had the means and could probably make the new identity almost perfect. Better than what she could get in the underground trades.

and collided if you wanted to own ver tahesh, go ham, u rp good and youre active enough, you dont even need to be this active ]] (Thank you. Also good to know about murder mystery aspects and so on in other posts. As for activity level...honestly my mind has been really foggy until recently and I'd been struggling to write. Now that I can again, I'm sort of biting at the bit to write as much in roleplay, fanficton, original work, etc. just to make up for lost time. Hope it isn't, like, annoying or something lol. As is, I have a few questions about how you'd like VT to be like. Feel free to PM or describe in greater detail here. I was thinking that, because of how they are about loyalty and betrayal, the murder of their Shah might result in atypical power transfer. Instead of the Mir as in natural death or old age, there would be loyalty tests. Basically magical trials one has to go through and whoever succeeds best is then put in charge, then next best is Mir, and so on. I'm considering Harlow still, but there's also a possible other character I keep considering having him mention or to be involved in this. Wouldn't have to be played by me. Character basics are older woman with a dart art power she has hidden. She is thought to be just a healer connected to the VT, but she's actually a "heart-render". Her ability is, supposedly, the ability to be able to wake people from comas, episodes, fugue states, etc. and help people with mental illnesses or disabilities. Good wholesome power. How she does it, however, is she is a dream-walker/mind-walker ("innerworld") and she can enter other people's "innerworld's" to help them, but also to coerce or manipulate. I imagine she discovered this accidentally while young, accidentally making someone sleep walk out a window because they were able to fly in the dream. So she was drawn to VT because she was scared of the reality getting out. She wanted protection to keep a secret so she could be a healer, her dream, and sometimes she helped them in return by harming Bad People who she felt deserved it. So while she didn't have a super deep connection and is aware, like Harlow, it's a cult and doesn't deny it...she's scared for herself and angry at whoever took away her protection and people she cared for. Maybe she even could have had a romantic thing for Riven? If he was straight/bi, or maybe otherwise unrequited. Or one of the others that died recently. So she passed the tests and her power is strong enough others feel she's best suited, compared to an enchanter who is now Mir, and they work acceptably well together due to both being self-aware and not completely out of it on Angel Ash. Otherwise I'm wondering if Isaac can freak out a bit more after having a more reasonable "I'm a person, hello person" conversation with Kai, due to the fact the little terrier dog or whatever starts getting sick from eating a person's thumb/licking up blood. So poison. Could he end up wandering off, maybe weirdly enough Kai follows, to find two people killed by poison, sickly dog, and the people's kid hiding somewhere? B/c the idea of him being judgement eventually requires he gets angry enough to use his ability in a way that is, uh, probably vigilante-like? Maybe? Not sure. Could be something else that tips him over and he could instead just want to use what information he can gather through canines or pretending to be one to hurt people who would hurt a family. Kai might recognize he'd make a good mole, like the wall spider shifters I think he was concerned about in another post.)

He saw her and heard the question, immediately smiling to hopefully brush his discontent under the rug. Luckily, she didn't seem to notice. "No one in serious danger, though I did find a casualty," Ezra said, not lying about what he had found. It was okay. He drank what could only be called a swig of his burning hot coffee, seemingly unaffected by it. "How are you doing?" he asked, not necessarily trying to change the subject since he was sincerely curious, hoping the migraine at least faded. "I hope you were able to rest." He was glad he brought her here since at the club Samar was obviously not paying attention to threats. And if she had been, she wouldn't have been relaxing. The headache would have likely gotten worse. "You can stay here longer, if you need, but I understand it is awkward remaining in a stranger's home. And unsafe, considering your job." For her, at least, she would think it unsafe and impractical since she didn't truly know Ezra and she was giving him a form of trust.

He watched her glance out the window; she was on edge, but they had been driving around the same area they picked her up, and away from her apartment. A Fournier car going near there was suspicious. "Actually, you won't. Another identity leaves room for slip up, and I'm afraid this is too big a mission to risk that." She wasn't professional enough to remember all that info for such a long streak--even good, working cops messed up. Spying was not Elwyn's main job, theft was. "It will be more genuine with yourself. Please--I'm not trying to land you in more danger here, it's just that setting you up with all new information for something like this had many downsides," he said, frowning, eyebrows crinkled upwards. "They are suspicious people, and any discrepancies they find, they will not let go. Say, if you don't immediately respond to your fake name. The other option is that we make an identity extremely close to yours, but there's still the thing about fake information matching up with who you are. You have... a very unique first name, one that others will not share. If someone happens to know you as Elwyn, but you've been given a different last name, that's a red flag." And it was. She lived in Ashburn, for God's sake, no doubt some coffee shop cashier was a member, or a bank teller, who knows? "What we do need is a good story, a reason you went to Ver Tahesh. You don't have dark art magicks and won't be the first member not to, but you need a good backstory. That is up to you to make, since again, it will be more genuine based off of your past experiences and emotions towards certain things. Try not to stray too far from your real like, though."

The woman raised her eyebrow towards Γmilien. She didn't say anything as he spoke, only nodding when the time called for it. Then he said her name. Elwyn's blood froze. How the hell did he know her real name? She never gave it to anyone, she didn't like the risk. However something could've easily slipped through the cracks, she wasn't always so careful. When she just started out, she did use her real first name. Perhaps if they knew where to look, the Fouriners' could've found it out. But if they knew, that means others might. Protection from the Fouriners' didn't sound so bad then, especially because she didn't want to end up like her parents.
"I never used my real name on the lease and have only rented it for a few months now. My neighbors know me as Eleanor McAlister, which is also the name on my lease. I don't have my real name on anything really. Besides that, I don't go to my place in Ashburn often." Elwyn felt quite insulted. Did this man really assume she would be careless enough to use her real name? She had five various locations she used, each with a different name. Despite her ever growing annoyance towards the man, she couldn't help but acknowledge that he had a point. What if she was too slow on her response time? What if the Eleanor McAlister idenity wasn't as air-tight as she thought? Could someone recognize her? Not, perhaps, if she changed her look entierly. But would thay cause suspicion with those more observant? Questions swirled in her head, now she was questioning if she was fit for the job. Focus, she scolded herself. She drew in a deep breath and relaxed. Getting worked up like that helped no one, especially herself.
Elwyn turned her attention back to Γmilien and nodded in agreement. "Of course. A good story can certainly sell the bit." She already had one prepared, already prepared from when she moved in. She also always had a simple idea of a background in case she needed it. She could handle the job. She could do it. It would be the most diffcult one she got yet, but she would succeed. She had to succeed, or be placed into more danger than she was about to get herself into.
(No worries, that what it seemed like. As for her name, thought I'd give some clarification just in case. She's a very paranoid person and rarely uses it for anything. As mentioned during their conversation, she has a fake name for all her apartments/places she's renting. She also rotates which one she lives in quite often.)

Isaac Garcia: Animal Magic: Bowery: Mentions Kai Niccolier
Isaac heard the shadow manβs heart rate increase as he walked over, but he hadnβt fully recognized what it was until heβd already sat down and started eating. Then he felt guilty. The man acted as if he was calm, but even with the coffee--unless it was tachycardia--there was something else. There was a fear smell too, under all of it. Isaac remembered again that he was indeed someone who might come across as frightening. He recalled that one night, a woman had crossed the road to avoid him. It had finally hit him then he was an adult man and despite the fact he still felt young, like someone would even kidnap him, he looked like a predator now. The other man didnβt come across that way to him. The shadow trick had felt threatening, especially it being a wolf, but the man besides the powers? They might be about the same height, the other guy a bit shorter maybe, but the other guy also seemed effeminate. He knew something like that wasnβt ideal by far for surviving high school unharmed, much less the rest of life. The manβs snake tattoo reminded him again of some bar, blurred memory where someone had gotten him drinking even though it was never good for him. He wasnβt a mean drunk, of course, but his bodyβs shifting often made certain things worse for him. As is, he couldnβt remember the manβs name and he doubted he remembered some random customer. As is, he also didnβt want to scare people. It didnβt feel right. So he felt like he had to make up for something heβd done, even if he wasnβt sure if heβd done anything wrong besides being panicked.
The man made up for any fear with bluntness. It was familiar, common in his family. He thought of his abuela and how she always seemed so tactless, but she was shrewd. This man seemed to fall into that category too, but usually he couldnβt tell. The familiarity was all he had, but he doubted in other ways the shadow man was like an old grandmother.
βUh, well, Iβm having a bit of a bad day,β he said. He wasnβt sure how to explain. βI guess I got some bad news.β
He almost heard his abuela saying something akin to, βYou may as well say nothing, boy.β It was true, it was too vague. Not helpful. Not enough to make up for scaring him. A nothing answer was safer, but he also still wanted distraction. The other man hadnβt been shy about his magic. Maybe it was only fair to return in kind.
βMy magic is giving me a bit of trouble,β Isaac said. βBecause I am upset. I donβt feel great.β
He paused, unsure of what to say or how to say it. People often said he didnβt act right, or speak right. Use the right tone. Something. The dogs always seemed to understand him.
βYours is more interesting, the shadows,β he added. βI just end up looking like some Hollywood werewolf, you know, bad special effects and all.β It was only mostly a joke. βWhen I saw the wolf, I thought you knew me somehow. Iβm sorry if I bothered you. Just trying to snap out of being upset, yeah? Donβt want to look like Iβm ready for Halloween months early. Usually it isnβt so bad. Uh, and I wouldnβt hurt anyone, you know? Itβs just the shape, not...my mind.β
This was somewhat true. Except when he was a dog, he felt different because he saw the world differently. The change in viewpoint couldnβt be helped. That being said, he hadnβt hurt anyone. It didnβt make him aggressive. Just different.
βDoes that help the curiosity? Iβm Isaac by the way.β

βIβm fine,β Samar responded. Her smile was wan, thick with exhaustion. It was the quiet moments that got to her, when the adrenaline had truly faded and there was nothing left to fight or run from. That was when everything caught up to her, and Samar could no longer sustain the resources that had kept her going through the night. βA little better, honestly. It just takes time, is all. It doesnβt really function like normal headaches where you can go to sleep with one and still wake up with it the next day. Thereβs a time limit to this, that much I know. Itβs slowly ticking down. Iβve just been here the whole time, waiting for that timer to hit zero.β
All Samar was saying was true, if not an oversimplification. But that was fine, he didnβt need to know the ins and outs of her abilities, just as she didnβt need to know his.
βI wouldnβt be half as good at my job if I didnβt know how to protect myself in an unfamiliar building,β she told him absently. βAnd surely you arenβt just a unsafe, bringing in an unpredictable career criminal into your home. You do this often or are you only that stupid on certain days?β Samar raised a brow at him. Her line of questioning wasnβt meant to be critical or offensive, she was just curious. He clearly had compassion for other, having found her when wandering the streets looking for stragglers and bodies, but that was something that could easily be taken advantage of.
βI can go if you need me to,β she amended.
