SaltClan is a Clan which makes its home on the coast, in the dunes, shore, and spare forest next to the sea. It is warm here year-round- even in the deepest, hardest winter it barely gets cold enough at night for the dew to freeze, and the cats don't even have a word for "snow." Of course, the heat brings its own challenges, as does their environment. Heat exhaustion, mighty storms, and sickness plague the cats in nearly every season, and hordes of twolegs make their lives more difficult throughout the summer. There are more predators lurking in the waters of the swamps and marshes and sea- gators, sharks, stingrays, and even dolphins present unique dangers to the Clan.
Of course, there are benefits to living here as well. Cats rarely, if ever, freeze to death, and prey is plentiful year-round. Dense foliage in the forest makes it easy for cats to hide from both prey and predator, and makes good shelter against the continuing storms, as well as insulated dens against the heat, humidity, and insects.
SaltClan is made up of relatively small cats, at least compared to the often larger kittypets that live comfortable, well-fed lives in the surrounding twolegplaces. After all, with such vicious predators as gators and sharks, size matters less than speed and cleverness. Even so, the sturdy cats of SaltClan pack a lot of muscle into their smallish bodies, and are still not to be trifled with.
Cats of this Clan are most often sandy colors such as light brown and ginger, though they can sometimes be white, dark ginger, and dark brown. They are very rarely black or gray, however, and these pelt colors typically indicate mixed blood. Their eyes are most often a shade of blue or green, with amber and yellow being less common than in other populations, and orange practically unseen. Tabbies are in the minority, but most cats do have bold white markings on their pelts- rarely are cats a solid color.
Most cars are very short-haired, with sleek pelts. Cats with mid-length and slightly long fur do exist in the Clan, but are less common, as the longer the fur, they more difficult it is to swim, avoid overheating, and remove insects such as ticks. Cats with truly long fur are never seen in the Clan except with mixed blood. A unique trait of SaltClan is that many of its members are also hairless. However, though these cats overheat less, they must also be careful about sunburns, and thus cannot stay in direct sunlight as long as their Clanmates.
In terms of personalities, SaltClan cats tend to value cleverness above all else. The environment is harsh, and most enemies here cannot be fought with brute strength. Thus, intelligence is strategic thinking is needed to survive, not only in emergency situations, but also with day to day tasks like patrols and resource allocation. Cats are expected- always- to put the Clan before themselves, as if the Clan cannot depend on its members, it will not survive its environment. Punishments for breaking the warrior code or putting the Clan at risk are often harsh, though never outright cruel. Cats are expected to always work as a unit, and must learn to put aside their personal differences when out in the territory, no matter how severe their dislike of each other. Cats are taught to be obedient to authority and to obey their elders, but also not to do so blindly. Questioning leadership is not only accepted, but encouraged; however, outright disobedience is not. In the end, coordination is always the most important to a SaltClan cat. SaltClan cats are still quite individualistic despite their one for all mentality, and they still seek to distinguish themselves from the others. Ambition and pride is valued, but never to the extent that it is detrimental to the Clan. Cats gain glory by putting their Clan first, not by serving themselves.
That said, SaltClan has a rather unique tradition, the Placing of Paws, which happens when a cat becomes a warrior. There is a small sandstone cave in the forest, and it is here that the pawprints of every cat to earn their warrior name since- supposedly- the beginning of the Clan. Simple inks are made out of berries gathered in the forest, and a cat makes a pawprint on the wall of the cave before being given their name by the leader. The ceremony is less public than a typical warrior ceremony, as only a few cats attend: the leader, medicine cat, and the new warrior's mentor. This ceremony is sometimes referred to as a cat "leaving their paw behind," referring both to the pawprint, and to losing the 'paw' suffix in their name. It is considered far more of an accomplishment than a typical warrior ceremony.
Something unique about this, however, is the fact that it is more difficult for cats to earn their warrior names than in a regular Clan. Unlike in most Clans, where a cat earns their warrior name when they reach adulthood and a base level of skill, cats in SaltClan only earn their warrior name once they have proven beyond doubt that they are capable, skilled, and loyal to the Clan above themselves. Cats who are too clumsy, selfish, or hot-headed might go indefinitely without ever "leaving behind their paw," some cats getting to be nearly 30 moons before they earn their warrior name. This is fairly uncommon, however, as most cats either earn their warrior name sometime around or prior to 20 moons old (though being an apprentice until as old as 25 moons is also fairly common), or else are killed off due to a lack of skill or an excess of temper. Apprentices older than about 16 moons are generally treated more like warriors anyways, with their mentors only very loosely involved in their lives, and being mostly independant (though they still lack some privaleges). It is also frowned upon for adult apprentices to formally take mates, or have kits, as they have not proven that they are worthy of passing their traits to a new generation.
The last thing of note about SaltClan is the fact that it has two medicine cats, each potentially with an apprentice, for a potential total of four. This is because of the diseases and disasters of this territory, which may cut a cat's life short at any moment. It is too risky to only have one trained medicine cat at a time, as if something happens to them, the Clan has absolutely no way to regain that lost knowledge.

Roleplay Rules
The rules of this roleplay are pretty simple and straightforward, and mostly common sense. Obviously, all forum rules apply. Keep the vulgarity, gore, and all that stuff at a reasonable level (like half of us are adults here, or close to it, so I'm not gonna say don't be vulgar/gory at all, ever. But like, keep it reasonable). Don't troll, don't kit-steal, try to get along with everyone (at face value at least), don't use/control other peoples' characters unless they specifically give you permission, don't steal, etc. etc.
As for characters, keep them realistic, in appearance, personality, experiences, and all that. That goes without saying. Please try to adhere to the appearance standards of the Clan you're joining- though they don't have to fit all the stereotypes, there are some things that are required, unless your cat has outside blood, which should be limited to a few characters at most. As for personalities, give them a balance of good and bad traits. Though you don't really see a whole lot of Mary-Sues anymore, what I do see a lot of are extremely emo characters who have had only bad things happen to them, are always outcasts, are always depressed, etc. etc. Don't make your character perfect, but also don't make them over-the-top gloomy and imperfect. It's annoying, and no one is gonna want to do anything with that character. Of course, some characters will have bad things happen to them, sometimes a lot of bad things. Some of them will be sad/depressed. Some will be outcasts to some degree. The key is that some will have some of these things happen. Not many will have all of these things happen. Keep it realistic, guys.
Literacy is also a very important aspect of this roleplay. This is not an advanced/literate roleplay, but I do expect everyone to be at least high-end semi-literate. That is, I expect pretty good grammar (it has to be easily legible at least; occasional mistakes are fine; however, I don't want major misspellings every sentence or with terrible punctuation all the way through, just as an example). You should be able to consistently be able to write a decent-sized paragraph (like, 3-5 sentences or so), with a little more or less here and there depending on the situation. And finally, you should be able to actually carry a plot and contribute to the story instead of just floating around trying to bait other people into interaction. On the flip side, though, please don't write a novel unless it's necessary; if your posts are consistently too long, people aren't going to be interested in reading them thoroughly. Similarly, though advanced words can enhance writing, if your average reader would need to go to a dictionary for every other word, you should probably tone it down a bit.
Next, activity. I'm not gonna make a strict "be on this often or I'll kick you" rule because that's silly; overall activity comes and goes. Some days or weeks will be more active than others. I just expect you to be on enough to stay involved and your characters to stay relevant. When people start to forget your character exists, or when the roleplay as a whole starts to lag, is when I'm gonna start putting out warnings. Of course, people who hold high ranks, such as leader, deputy, and medicine cat, I will expect to be more available. Not necessarily constantly, but frequently enough to resolve any plots which may require you. If you are unable to do this, you will have to relinquish that rank. If it's only a temporary matter (such as not being able to be on for a few days), you may assign someone else to use your high-ranking character ONLY for the sake of resolving plots needing them (for example, if a cat gets hurt and needs the medicine cat, the step-in can roleplay the medicine cat for the brief interaction of treating the patient, so that events aren't bottlenecked by your real-life unavailability). Hopefully it won't come to this, though.
And finally, chatting. Obviously, I expect you to separate our out of character talk from your in-character talk using brackets, parentheses, or some kind of similar symbol. I expect you to play nice with one another. And though I do hope that you will become friends over the course of this roleplay, I would like it if you would keep chatting on this page to a minimum. For long, continuing, and drawn-out conversations, please take it to PM or another thread. I've seen way too many good roleplays killed off by pages and pages of chatter with no roleplay- don't let that happen. I don't want to see more than 3 or maybe 4 consecutive posts with no roleplaying on them.

The Warrior Code
Defend your Clan, even with your life. You may have friendships with cats from outside the Clan, but your loyalty must remain to your Clan, as one day you may meet them in battle.
Elders, queens, and kits must be fed before apprentices and warriors. Unless they have permission, apprentices may not eat until they have hunted to feed the elders. If any warrior or apprentice is sick or injured, they may eat while the elders, queens, and kits are eating.
Prey is killed only to be eaten. Give thanks to StarClan for its life.
A kit must be at least six moons old to become an apprentice.
Newly appointed warriors will keep a silent vigil for one night after receiving their warrior name.
A cat cannot be made deputy without having mentored at least one apprentice.
The deputy will become Clan leader when the leader dies, retires or is exiled.
After the death or retirement of the deputy, the new deputy must be chosen before moonhigh.
Boundaries must be checked and marked daily. Challenge all trespassing cats.
No warrior can neglect a kit in pain or danger, even if the kit is from a outside the Clan.
The word of the Clan leader is the warrior code.
An honorable warrior does not need to kill other cats to win their battles, unless they are outside the warrior code or if it is necessary for self-defense.
A warrior rejects the soft life of a kittypet.

Territory & Camp
SaltClan makes its home in an area most reminiscent of central or south Florida, and is therefore the flora and fauna is that which could be found in subtropical, coastal Florida. SaltClan lives along the coast, with most of its territory made up of beach and dunes, with a small amount of sandy forest.
Most of SaltClan's territory is beach, which makes up the west side of the territory. There is a wide stretch of beach- varying from about a tree-length to two or three- between the water and the dunes. Here, cats can hunt crabs and chase minnows in the shallows, as well as hunt the variety of wading birds that forage for food in the sand. However, cats must be wary of twolegs and their dogs, especially on warm and sunny days. Birds of prey such as ospreys or owls will also hunt here, and sharks, stingrays, and jellyfish may lurk in the water. Cats must also be careful not to be pulled away by the tide or undertow.
Beyond the beach is sparse foliage, mostly low-growing palms fronds, ferns, shrubs, and grasses. A few places are more open, with sandy meadows filled with grass and wildflowers, many of which are thorny. Ground rodents like mice and rabbits are abundant here, as are birds and their nests, and herbs that grow in the open. However, snakes are also very common here, and cats much be very careful when moving through the underbrush so as not to disturb them. Large predators like coyotes, foxes, and boars also traverse this landscape, and birds of prey may attack from the air.
Past the dunes, the landscape turns to dense forest of pines and oaks, with low marshes filled with cypress. SaltClan only hunts in the fringes of this landscape, as it presents other dangers entirely, which they are often not prepared to face. However, cats do venture here, mostly for the sake of fresh water. Squirrels, songbirds, and forest prey is also abundant here. However, cats must be cautious of snakes, spiders, and- when near the water- gators. Baby gators can make good prey, but cats must also make sure the mother is nowhere to be found. It is past the marshes in this forest where the Pawcall Cave can be found.
There is also a twolegplace which forms the northern border of the Clan's territory. Just off the beach itself, massive houses sit, with large yards, pools, and stairs directly down to the beach. This is the most common place to encounter twolegs and dogs, and the Clan cats typically steer clear of this border as much as possible. Farther away from the sea itself, the houses become a bit smaller, with slightly larger yards, though they are certainly still of a more luxurious style. Kittypets and alley cats are fairly common around this area, as many of the twolegs provide food for strays.
SaltClan's camp is located in a circle of sandstone rocks in the dunes, a bit closer to the forest than the sea. Most cats sleep in shallow acloves dug in the sand beneath the rocks, or in the dense foliage around them. The Clan does not have designated dens for the warriors, apprentices, leader, or elders; however, the leader and the elders are typically given the warmest, most comfortable dens. The medicine den is set a bit away from the rest, in a cluster of azalea bushes where the branches have been woven together to form a well-insulated den. The medicine cats sleep in a different den from their patients, so as not to catch their sicknesses, and their herbs are stored in divets dug over time with rocks and claws into the soft sandstone boulder that makes up one wall of the medicine cats' den. The nursery is also a designated den, a reasonably deep and well-protected burrow under the roots of a gnarled and low-growing thorn bush. It is only large enough for two or three queens with relatively large litters of young kits to sleep in comfortably, before getting a bit crowded.
