The Gemma Doyle Series by Libba Bray The writing style of the book was beautiful, but the main character felt unlikable to me and the ending made the whole series feel like a waste of time. At the end, the main love interest turns into a tree. A tree. And the reasoning for it felt very unrealistic to me. not that i want to give the author any credit for it, nor do i know anything about the series at all, but it could be a play on the old story of the nymph Daphne being turned into a laurel tree by Gaia to avoid the advances of Apollo.

Most likely it is mythologically inspired, but after rereading it, it just feels out of place? I felt like the ending was rushed and the character's sacrifice was kind of undeserving. The love interest, Kartik, sacrifices himself to an evil, magical tree in order to save the main char Gemma. Gemma never did anything for him throughout the book series that should have made him want to give up his life for her. She's petty, unkind and rude throughout the whole series.
Of course that's just my opinion. I know there are a lot of people that really liked the books.
