Long ago, giants roamed this land. Vast, great, and terrible, they gave birth to the sea, the land, the plants and the animals. They blessed each of their creations with features that made them wonderful and unique. But they favored just one, beasts that were made in their image, and they were called Cats. The giants were pleased with themselves, and felt they could live in peace with all of their creations in this world. But what happened next they had not foreseen. Their other creations began fighting and killing their most beloved works, the cats. Many creatures were jealous of the cats, seeing them as rivals, threats, nuisances, and even prey. The giants wanted to protect the cats, but did not wish to harm their other creations. They came up with a plan to protect their cats, and to limit their access to the world that would harm and destroy them. The giants created a safe place, a land of forests and meadows, of rivers and beaches, of bright, sunny days and cool, dark nights, and with few dangers. Here, the cats would be safe. There was just only one thing left to do. One by one, each giant laid on the border of the place they had created, walling it with their own bodies from the rest of the world. And now, they sleep until they know their creations will be able to live in peace. They have already slept for so long that their bodies have become one with the earth itself, covered in stone and dirt. But still, they sleep on. They sleep on, overlooking the great forests, the meadows, the rivers, the beaches, and the ocean that lay beyond. They will protect the heartland and all of the cats until the world is safe.

At least, that is what the old stories tell you. Despite the tales and beliefs passed down for generations, many dangers lie waiting in the heartland. Other creatures who want to take our land, our prey, and our lives. Sometimes it appears death is merely one step away. So step carefully through the Windingwood, tread quickly through the Broken Heath and grass meadows, remain steadfast while climbing the great mountains, and never swim too far off of the salt-smelling beaches. The shadows are watching. And they welcome you.

This roleplay takes place in a place known as the Heartland, which has its own lore, stories and landscapes. This roleplay takes place in a time known as the primal era, near the very beginning of the heartlandโs existence. There are no borders, there are no clans, and there are no laws. The cats themselves are loosely woven together by the old tales, most still believe the stories of giants, some try to see the truth in them, and others believe the tales are simply for kits. No matter what their views may be, there is still danger, there is still fighting, and there is still death. But in this lifetime, there is no warrior code or StarClan to save them now.

โ advancedness. This roleplay is semi-advanced to advanced, meaning at least five lines and fluent grammar. Donโt worry if you spell one or two words wrong, or make a simple grammar mistake, no one will hold it against you! Donโt be afraid to use google or to ask about spelling a word, and thereโs even helpful sites that can help you think of words you canโt remember. The five line minimum is flexible, as we arenโt always full of muse and able to write a lot in a reply, but weโd prefer if you did follow that rule most of the time, or as often as you can.
โ activity. This is the lifeblood of all roleplays, so you probably already know how important this is. Activity is the thing that defines this roleplay's lifespan, since people will need to be actively posting for it to stay relevant and strong. However, I do realize people have lives outside of the forums, and the forums does not take priority other real life obligations. So I will be as flexible as possible with this rule, asking normal members to post a roleplay reply four times a week, and mods/admins to post five times a week. If you're going to be absent or aren't able to be here for a period of time, please let us know and we will put you on hold and free up any characters.
โ characters & realism. One of the mottos of this roleplay will be 'keep it real', since realism is such an important factor. No cat always has a successful hunt, or emerges from battle with barely a scratch. Imperfections are welcomed, and wanted. Everyone makes mistakes and no character is free from that rule. That doesn't mean your character can't have an easy kill once in a while, or get a lucky strike in a scuffle, just don't forget that everything doesn't have to be perfect! When it comes to character designs, it's also preferable that they look like a real cat would. Looking up references to help describe them is ideal if you aren't used to how cat genetics work. Fun fact: albino cats commonly have violet eyes! However, we do need to keep it real in survival aspects, as well. Even though we welcome things such as mental and physical differences, they must be played out realistically, and the fact is that a cat who is blind or deaf is not likely to have a long lifespan or be alive in general in the wilderness. Other disabilities like having a twisted foot (much like Deadfoot or even Cinderpelt in the books) can be worked around and adapted into a cat's life. Remember, in the Heartland, nature has no mercy.
โ no god-modding, power-playing, etc. Of course, this is usually a given in any roleplay. It is very not allowed to control anyone's character without permission. It's common roleplay etiquette to allow the other player to control their character's reactions and actions alike, just as it is yours to control your own. I don't believe there is a proper title for something like this, but under no circumstances may a member control and enact a major plot device or event without discussion and proper agreement of the whole group, especially the owner. I still tell the story of how one of my first Clans came to ruin because a member decided to make a tornado go through the territory and kill other member's characters without consulting anyone when I had left for a few hours. This is very important! I wholeheartedly welcome plot and event suggestions, and as a group we may discuss them and even make them official. But please don't try to cause a major event or plot point without asking first.
โ heartland staff. I will be accepting people I know I can trust to be active and fair to become moderators and admins of this roleplay. They will be able to enforce rules, apply warnings, accept characters and continue the roleplay's events if I'm ever absent. Please do not ask to be a mod or admin. I will choose and ask people who I know can handle it and I can trust to be active enough.
โ this is a safe-space. This roleplay is completely open to lgbt+ characters, characters who display disabilities or mental disorders (as long as they are done accurately and tastefully, I say this as a person who has anxiety, depression and ptsd and have characters who express my personal symptoms in respectful manners.) If you do not respect or support lgbt+, please remove yourself from this page, as I do not think this is the roleplay for you.
โ no spamming, advertising or drama. These things aren't really in the same category, but I figured they wouldn't be enough to make rules of their own. Spamming is obvious, don't spam the page or bump it a lot, it gets old fast and can be pretty annoying. If no one is online or replying, just wait! Advertising doesn't belong on any of these pages, asking someone to return to another clan or roleplay is fine, but please try not to ask people to join your other roleplay or post a lot of links for your socials here. Drama is a big one, if you have beef with someone, take it elsewhere. We don't tolerate any negativity or bad blood and we definitely don't want any flame wars starting that will end up getting the page deleted. That being said, please just try to have fun, and don't feed trolls if they pop up!
โ That's it! You made it through the rules, congrats! The last and most important rule is to have fun! This roleplay is meant for creativity to run wild and for us all to get along and go through some crazy adventures with our characters. I hope I can make this a great place for everyone involved, thanks for reading and I hope you stick around to join us!

[map goes here]
The Heartland is a sheltered valley, the Sleeping Giants bordering the territory to the west, and spreading to the north until they drop into narrow pathways and steel cliffs along the Ocean. To the north, you find the Foothills leading up to the rocky crags and crooked nooks of the mountains. These foothills are dotted with trees that grow thicker as you travel to the south, especially towards the southwest. These towering conifers are known as the Coldwoods, being swampy and prone to frost. If you continue lower, towards the southeast, you'll find the Broken Heath. It is said that the earth cracked when one of the giants fell to rest, and that land is flat and covered in tussock grass and hills. Occasional cracks line the earth, some small and shallow enough to cross, others leading into steep ravines that would surely mean death if one was to get too close. The grassy meadows are closely connected to the Broken Heath, dotted with flowers and continuing to the south until they border the beaches of Moon's Roost. Named after the way the land caresses the ocean in the shape of a crescent moon, the pale sand is said to sparkle when light of the full moon hits it. Across a river known as the Giant's Tail, the southwest meadows begin to bleed into an aspen forest known as the Palewoods. As the trees grow thicker to the west, they fully break into a large, thick deciduous forest called the Windingwood. The Windingwood is lush, known for how tightly knit the trees can be at the heart, and how moss and undergrowth is plentiful there.

Currently, the weather is crisp and cool. Frost still occasionally dusts the grass, but for the most part the days are a comfortable temperature. Leaves and flowers have begun to return. Rain is slightly more common, but the days of snow are over for now. More animals have started emerging from their dens, preparing for the coming bounty of plentyleaf.
