there is no past and no future in this place. if you think about the past too much--think about the way things used to be, how you were, who you were with--you'll drive yourself insane. if you think about the future, you are wasting your precious time. there just isn't any benefit to plan ahead. there is only the present--those things immediately in front of you.
timeline 2050: global warming is beginning to become an unavoidable problem. ecologists employed by the WHO are seeing migratory waterfowl and bats create novel migration patterns across densely populated urban areas, as their previous territory is becoming less and less accessible. the WHO issues a health warning, predicting new dispersal of preexisting infectious diseases, and new infectious diseases altogether. this warning falls on deaf ears. June, 2052: strange riots erupt in South America. a strange kind of intense interpersonal violence within the crowds is particularly unique to these protests. travelers in developing countries are urged to return to their countries of origin, and many comply. July 01, 2052: a family, recently having fled from Caracas, Venezuela, is hospitalized in Vienna. they exhibit early stage rabies symptoms (fever, delirium, general sluggishness) and are kept under isolation after tissue samples were collected. it is unknown whether or not this family contracted rabies, but the superficial bite and scratch marks on their hands and arms suggest contact with an animal. July 03, 2052: all members of the nuclear family succumb to this mystery illness. upon collection and removal of their bodies, however, the father strangely reanimates and bites through the healthcare worker's containment suit. the father cannot be restrained until he suffers blunt force trauma to the head. August, 2052: multiple developed countries are reporting incidents of this disease. many developing countries are struggling greatly to keep aggressive, reanimated citizens at bay and maintain national order. September, 2052: the WHO announces that this novel Lyssavirus (relative species of the rabies virus) is incredibly hard to manipulate under laboratory settings. little is known about it, and hopes for a vaccine or cure have long since been out of the question. October, 2052: Austria's government collapses. many developed European countries are soon to follow. many countries in the tropical global south have long since fallen. November, 2052: after a valiant fight to maintain order and governance, the United States government collapses.
format all of this better lol

setting it is 2057. the world is restoring itself, slowly but surely--the temperature change isn't measurable or quantifiable by those who used to run the numbers every year, but it's getting colder. the sun is beginning to grow less intense as the ozone layer returns, as carbon emissions are now next to nothing. nature takes back urban spaces, with long tendrils of plant life and grasses beginning to scale the tallest of buildings.
there are still bodies and trash in the streets, but they're decomposing and dusty, mere shells of their former selves. not all household food has gone bad yet, that is, if you're lucky enough to find a pantry or safehouse that hasn't already been looted. most gas stations are clean out of fuel, but if you're far enough out of the beaten path and you find a pump, chances are, you'll get lucky.
there is no running water, unless you're independent or far-removed, like on a farm or secluded cabin. there is no power grid: the only way to get lights is if you have your own generator. there is no internet. radios only really work if other people are on them, but they're also too risky for most--they'll hear them.
what we know not much information has been disseminated due to the nature of the crisis and panic that ensued, but there are a few general guidelines known well by those who have survived this far:
- you can get sick from contact with infected saliva (probably bodily fluids in general, too) if it breaks through your skin and enters your bloodstream, enters your eyes, or your mouth. - infected saliva comes from infected people who have died and revived. nobody knows if infected people awaiting death can transmit the virus. - if you get sick, you will die. you will then reanimate at some point, hours or days later. - reanimated infected people (zombies, one may call them--their nomenclature depends on dialect) are aggressive, beyond any reason or communication, and dangerous. newer ones can sprint with the speed of a healthy human. older ones tend to amble and stumble about. as they age, their bodies decompose, and they become less apt at spreading the disease. - the only way to completely subdue a reanimate is to destroy the head. wounding them anywhere else may only slow them down. - they are definitely visual and auditory hunters. it is unknown whether or not they can smell healthy people.

people
a pair: these two are tightly bonded through a long time spent working together. they would go to the ends of the earth for each other. [ form ] [ form ]
a trio: these three are newer to each other, but have formed good relationships nonetheless. distrust still plays a role in the workings of this group. [ form ] [ form ] [ form ]
a loner: it's wise to respect a person who has made it through this alone. it's wiser to treat them with caution. [ form ]
