Thanks again to TigerLily for the inspo
I really like how this one came out, and I might update Tawnypelt’s chapter to flow a little bit like this one. Maybe. Which this chapter finished I’ve got 50% of this fic done.
Question - What should Hollykit's Power be?
Nightcloud burst over the hill, her paws kicking up snow as she chased after a rabbit. She breathed heavily, annoyance make her frown, this rabbit was quick. It darted suddenly to the right, causing Nightcloud to have to skid to a stop, but before she could give chase again it had scampered across the border into Thunderclan territory.
”Foxdung!” She spat, sitting down to catch her breath.
Suddenly the bushes the rabbit had dispeared into rustled and out stepped a cat she desperately didn’t want to see right now, her escaped rabbit in her jaws.
”Leafpool, what do you want?”
The plump - that was new - tabby walked slowly over to her, and dropped the rabbit at Nightcloud’s paws. Nightcloud’s fur ruffled but before she speak, Leafpool interupted her.
”I’m sorry,” She began, “I don’t have any right to ask this you, but will you at least hear me out?”
Nightcloud held back that sharp no that was perched on the tip of her tongue, curiousity stopping her in the moment or perhaps it was Leafpools sad expression. Good a small part of her hissed, she dserved it.
”I’ll be straight forward with you - “ here she took a deep, shaky breath “I’m expecting kits and I want you to rise one.”
Nightcloud stared at her for a few heartbeats then frowned then that frown turned into a snarl, “Absolutely not.” She hissed, lashing her tail, she picked up her rabbit and turned away, stalking back to Windclan camp. Pretending the devastated look on Leafpools face did not bother her, just a little bit.
But it did and in the days that followed Nightcloud couldn’t get the thought out of her head.
There was nothing loved more than being a mother, and as she watched her son closely, she was aware of the anger towards Crowfeather and she didn’t really blame him. Perhaps having a sibling would soothe some of the anger that surged through his heart.
Though she also dispsed the thought of raising a kit of Leafpools. She couldn’t raise the very evidence that proved that Crowfeather loved that she-cat more than he loved her.
Could she?
A few days passed, and Nightcloud was restless. Her thoughts raced in her head and it was stressing her out. So much so that one day, Barkface came over to her as she was sitting near the nursery watching her son, Breezekit would be apprenticed soon however she was having trouble focusing anything that wasn’t Leafpool’s despressed face.
The old medicine cat cut right to the chase, “Do you think you’re expecting another litter?”
Nightcloud closed her eyes it seemed Barkface, though he had no idea he had, was forcing her to make her a choice. Saying no was the obvious choice, she should just forget the whole converstation with Leafpool had ever happened. However, just thinking that left a bad taste in her mouth. So Nightcloud steeled herself and made her choice.
”I think I just might be, Barkface.”
“Thats great news!”
Nightcloud stood up, “Do you want to tell Crowfeather for me? I’m going to take a walk while I still can.”
“Of course.”
She made her way to the barrier and slipped out, picking her way across the frozen ground. Once she was safely on the otherside of the hill, she made her way towards the stream where she had encountered Leafpool before.
It was just her luck that she spotted a Thunderclan patrol containing a familiar ginger and white she-cat. Nightcloud paused abruptly when Squirrelflight and the others spotted her, pausing in journey along the streams edge.
Her hackles raised as one of the toms turned and hissed at her, “Trying to sneak into our Territory?”
“Trying to pick a fight with a expecting mother? Thunderclan is truly slipping.”
“Say that aga-“
“Enough, Spiderleg, Nightcloud.” Squirrelflight interrupted, stepping in front of the tom before he could get into her space. “I’ll make sure she leaves, go catch up to Thornclaw and the others.”
Spiderleg hesitated before marching away with a hiss, when he disappeared from view, Squirrelflight jumped across the stream.
“Expecting? So are you going to raise one of Leafpools kits?”
“Yes.”
Relief washed over the other she-cats face, “That’s great news, she’s going to kit on the island so Tawnypelt and Mothwing can get there easily. Mothwing will let you know when its time.”
Nightcloud nodded and watched as Squirrelflight purred before disappearing back on her side of the border.
Over the next few weeks Nightcloud’s days where mostly unchanged, until Mothwing showed up.
It was nearing sundown when the Riverclan she-cat showed up, claiming that she was running short of a certain herb and maybe she was, but she also had stopped to whisper that Leafpool was at the island was was probably going to start kitting soon.
So Nightcloud went on the last hunting patrol of the night and snuck off when Ashfoot wasn’t looking.
She had thought her story through by now, she was hunting and it triggered her labor causing her to kit early. She would wait a few days then return with her new son or daughter and she could act like nothing out of the ordinary had ever happened.
She spent a few nights on her own before sneaking across the moor towards Riverclan territory, pausing to look around and make sure she didn’t run into anyone who wasn’t in on this little scheme.
She hugged the lake said, ears pricked as the log came into view along with a familiar silhouette.
“Mothwing?” She whispered, tense.
The she-cat turned her head at the sound of her name and Nightcloud relaxed before continuing, “Who are you waiting for?”
“You and Tawnypelt, well just her now since you’ve showed up.” She nodded her head at the island, “Hurry up, she should be here soon enough.”
Nightcloud nodded and scrambled her way across the log, feeling a little uneasy looking at the cold dark water below her. She jumped off soon enough though and padded past the trees surround the outside of the island and easily spotted Leafpool, two kits running around her paws in play.
At the sound her pawsteps the little black she-kit ran behind Squirrelflight jostling the blue tom she hadn’t noticed eariler. The ginger tom however puffed put his chest, but lost his bravodo when he noticed Tawnypelt and Mothwing not far behind her.
“Tawnypelt, Mothwing, you're here!" Leafpool called from her left, she sounded tired and sad
"Let's get this over with." Leafpool mewed solemnly, "Dawn's approaching and the kits are getting cold."
At the mention of them, two little heads peaked from around Squrrielflight's back and Nightcloud couldn’t help a sigh at how cute they were.
She spoke up then, "I'll take the little black one, she looks the most like Crowfeather."
Squrrielflight nodded and nudged the young black kit towards her, "Go with Nightcloud, Hollykit, she'll take you home."
"Okay." The young kit mewed, though she looked skeptically at Nightcloud who introduced herself with a quiet 'hello' and a purr. Nightcloud picked up the young kitten by the scruff and as Nightcloud turned to leave Hollykit glanced back at them.
“Bye Jaykit, Lionkit.”
She felt an ache in her chest at separating them, but Breezepaw would be a kind big brother – she hoped.
Luckily the walk to Windclan camp wasn’t long and she gently put the young she-cat down on the crest of a hill.
“Wow! These place goes on forever!” She cried, eyes wide.
Nightcloud had to laugh then she pointed at the camp, which they could see from the hill, and said “Race to camp!”
Hollykit gave a squeal and raced after her, tiny face scrunched in determination to beat her to camp. Nightcloud made sure to slow her stride to stay close to her, and so the young kit could win their little race.
Hollykit burst through the gorse barrier first, Nightcloud hot in her heels and the voices cried out instantly.
“Nightcloud!”
“Nightcloud’s back! And she’s had her kits!”
Breezepaw and Crowfeather where a step behind Barkface who sniffed over Hollykit first before checking over her.
“What happened?” Crowfeather fretted before Breezepaw could ask.
“I was out hunting and chasing a rabbit and before I knew it, Hollykit was born.”
“Just one?”
“Just the one.” Nightcloud turned to the newest addition to her family and told the only truth she had since walking into camp.
“Hollykit this is your father, Crowfeather and your brother Breezepaw.”
