TigerLily gave me the idea for this one, inspired by the Shadow!Lion, Wind!Holly and River!Jay AU. I also plan to write a similar AU where called The Four where they aren’t related.
Tawnypelt laid still in her nest, listening to the quiet rustles and snores of her denmates around her, she stood and rose quietly, making sure not disturb Rowanclaw as she made her way out of the den.
She paused as she glanced around camp, she guessed she had an hour or so before cats started to wake up and get ready for the Dawn Patrol. She fluffed up her fur as she crept across the snow-covered clearly towards the barrier and she poked her head out of the camp entrance, startling Ivytail, who jumped up and rounded on her in surprise.
”What are you doing?” She hissed, her fur fluffed up.
“I couldn’t go back to sleep, so I was going to get an early start on hunting.” She lied, worry pooling in her belly. A moon ago, Brambleclaw had approached her at the Gathering and whispered that he needed her help, Leafpool was expecting kits - she had hissed, rather loudly, in surprise at that drawing attention from some Riverclan cats - and he was asking her to foster one of the kittens.
Tawnypelt hadn’t given it a second thought before she agreed, her brother could always count on her for help, and she knows he’d do the same.
Ivytail narrowed her eyes as before she shrugged and went sat back down, accepting her answer. Tawnypelt mentally sighed in relief before trotting away from her. Once she was safely out of sight, she broke in a trot, headed towards the Lake.
Brambleclaw said Squrrielflight and Leafpool would be waiting on the Island.
Tawnypelt skirted the Lake and headed towards the Greenleaf Twoleg place, the moon casting eerie shadows across the snow as she traveled. She paused past the den, to catch her breath. The quiet sound of waves echoed in her ears, and she wondered, briefly, what would happen if she got caught crossing Riverclan Territory. She shook her head to banish that thought before it gained more ground and dashed forward to the fence on the other side of the Twoleg nest, and scaled the small rise beyond it.
"Being in this much open space makes me nervous." She mumbled to herself, she didn't know how Riverclan and Windclan could stand being so exposed like this, she thought to herself as she overlooked the territory before. She could smell the Riverclan scent markers from here and it put her on edge.
She moved forward slowly, skirting the edge of the lake, keeping her eyes peeled for other cats as she made her way over the hills, towards the stream where the fallen log rested that led that would take her to the island.
Suddenly, a scent of another cat hit her nose and shadow fell in front of her, Tawnypelt's heart leaped into her throat and she flattened herself to the ground with a hiss.
The she-cat jumped backward in slight surprise, before shushing her and whispering, "Relax, Tawnypelt! It's just me, Mothwing."
Tawnypelt hesitated before speaking, "What are you doing out here?"
"Well, I could ask you the same thing, this isn't Shadowclan territory."
Tawnypelt bristled, mind racing on how to get out this mess. Suddenly Mothwing smiled and continued speaking, "I'm just teasing you, Tawnypelt. You're here to meet Leafpool, right? I thought you'd come this way, so I was waiting for you to show up."
Tawnypelt slowly relaxed, heartbeat slowing in her chest.
"That was cruel, Mothwing."
The golden tabby smiled and let out a quiet laugh before nodding her head towards the stream -
"Follow me, I think Nightcloud is there already."
"Nightcloud?"
"Yes, I think Leafpool approached her? she is Crowfeather's mate now after all."
Tawnypelt hmmed in acknowledgment as she followed Mothwing closely, the trekking forward towards the stream as the wind picked up, sending a chill up Tawnypelt's spine. They waded across the stream easily and took a short moment to shake the frigid water off her paws.
The fallen tree leading towards the island was covered in a light dusting of snow, there was already paw prints across it, which Tawnypelt hoped was the Windclan Medicine cat, and not someone who else who had caught wind of their little rendezvous.
Tawnypelt nodded to Mothwing who hopped up on the log first, carefully picking her way across it. She jumped up soon after, the log cold and slippery between her paws, the water was quiet beneath her as she carefully followed in the paw prints of the others. She jumped off and together, the two she-cats clambered up the hill and pushed past the trees into the clearing below.
"Tawnypelt, Mothwing, you're here!" Leafpool called from her left, she sounded tired and sad.
Tawnypelt could understand why she was giving her kits away tonight, that can't be easy. She glanced around, meeting Squrrielflight's gaze and then Nightcloud's. She nodded to them both.
"Let's get this over with." Leafpool mewed solemnly, "Dawn's approaching and the kits are getting cold."
At the mention of them, two little heads peaked from around Squrrielflight's back, a small ginger tabby and a solid black kitten.
Nightcloud spoke up then, "I'll take the little black one, they look the most like Crowfeather." Whether she saw Leafpool's small flinch then, she didn't acknowledge it.
Squrrielflight nodded and nudged the young black kit towards her, "Go with Nightcloud, Hollykit, she'll take you home."
"Okay." The young kit mewed, though she looked skeptically at Nightcloud who introduced herself with a quiet 'hello' and a purr. Nightcloud picked up the young kitten by the scruff and as Nightcloud turned to leave Hollykit glanced back at them.
"Bye Lionkit, Jaykit."
'Jaykit?' Tawnypelt tilted her head and turned to look back a Squrrielflight, only to see a pair of unseeing blue eyes trained on her. 'He's blind.' She noted with a small bit of sympathy, Starclan had taken his sight.
Tawnypelt spoke up then, "I can take Lionkit, with a name like that he'll fit right into Shadowclan."
The young tom perked up at his name, and boldly walked toward before stating in as strong a voice as a kit could muster, "I can't leave, Jaykit! He needs me!"
Tawnypelt's heart broke just a little when Jaykit spoke up, "I don't need protection." His mewed with a sniff, turning to face the direction of Lionkit's voice.
Leafpool spoke up then, "I'm sure Jaykit will be fine in Riverclan, besides Shadowclan needs you far more than him right now."
"Really?"
"Really."
The young tom raised his chin like he been given a mission straight from Starclan itself before marching over to her with purpose, Tawnypelt couldn't help but chuckle just a little at his antics.
"Let's go, then!" he mewed and mad a dash like he was going to run straight to his new home all by himself before Tawnypelt swooped in and picked him up. He squeaked in surprise, and Tawnypelt dipped her head to Leafpool before turning back to where she came in to make the trek back to Shadowclan.
As she walked away she heard Jaykit ask behind her, "Whats Riverclan like?"
"Oh I think you'll like it Jaykit," Mothwing replied, but the rest of response was cut off as Tawnypelt passed the tree line.
The trip back to Shadowclan was even more nerve wracking than the trip from it, due to the fact she had a chatty kit with her now and she could hear the breaks begin to sing in the trees. So once she hit the familiar pines of her home, she breathed a sigh of relief. Tawnypelt dropped Lionkit and the young kit turned to look at her curiously.
"Now Lionkit," She began, "We're going to be at camp soon, so I need you to listen to what I say, okay?"
He nodded and she picked him and headed in the direction of camp, the barrier coming into view before her eyes not soon after, she took a deep breath and pushed her way past the barrier and into the camp.
The questions where on her almost instantly as she dropped Lionkit to the ground, the young tom backed behind her legs, bravado cowed by all the speaking cats.
Blackstar shouldered his way through the crowd, "Tawnypelt, what is the meaning of this?"
“I was out hunting and heard some noises by one of the Twoleg trails, and found him abandoned there. He wouldn’t have survived out there much longer.”
Blackstar mulled this over, staring down at the kit when Tallpoppy called out, “We can’t just throw him back into the cold, Blackstar!”
Tawnypelt raised her chin, “I’ll raise him as if he was my own, and Lionkit be an asset to Shadowclan.”
Blackstar dipped his head, ”Of that I have no doubt.”
Rowanclaw padded towards her and brushed his pelt against hers, “That makes us family, then.” He purred and the young tabbys eyes lit up.
“Lionkit! Lionkit!”
Tawnypelt laid still in her nest, listening to the quiet rustles and snores of her denmates around her, she stood and rose quietly, making sure not disturb Rowanclaw as she made her way out of the den.
