ERIN Idnasi
owner of a small galactic empire
Weddings were magical. They were the start of a new chapter, the beginning of a new adventure full of excitement. Weddings brought together two people who loved one another and wanted to be with each other for the rest of their lives. Some people dreamed of the day they got married their entire life, while others only thought about it after meeting their soulmate. Weddings were special, a cause for celebration. For most, it was the happiest day of a person’s life.
But for ERIN, this was easily in the top five of worst days of her life. She had never wanted to be married. She didn’t want to spend the rest of her life with somebody, especially somebody she barely even knew. Kai wasn’t a bad guy, she had enjoyed the very few interactions she had had with him, but she didn’t have any attraction toward him, no interest in building a romantic partnership with him that could last decades. Potentially she could see them becoming friends, but there was nothing beyond that that she could envision. Yet here she was, minutes away from marrying him. This wasn’t her choice. It wasn’t even Kai’s choice. This had been pushed upon them because of some stupid ancestor, some stupid law that declared this to be so. ERIN hated it. If she could change all this then she would. If she could go back and stop this from happening, she wouldn’t think twice. But she couldn’t do that. There was no stopping this now. She was to be wed to Kaiyo Walvelon. In a perfect world she wouldn’t be here. She’d be holed up in her room, working on one of her stories or binging yet another show. In her perfect world she wouldn’t know anything regarding if the king was to be married or not, but this wasn’t her perfect world. This was a world made out of everything she hated, and for some reason she was the main focus of it all.
It was almost time for her to head out there. From where she was she could hear the overly loud music playing, yet for as loud as the music was, it still couldn’t completely drown out the voices of all the people that had gathered here today. Royal families from all over were in attendance. Reporters flooded the area in hopes of getting the best gossip and details from the wedding. A handful of lucky people who had no connections to the wedding beyond being citizens under Kai’s leadership had been allowed to attend the wedding, and those who hadn’t been lucky enough to receive an invitation were sure to be watching it in the comforts of their homes, broadcasted live. This was the wedding of the century, after all, and it was going to be the only thing anybody talked about for a long while yet.
ERIN wanted to throw up. Why were so many people getting enjoyment out of this? Why was it okay for the whole world to get so excited over today? ERIN wasn’t excited about this at all. She was sure Kai wasn’t excited in the slightest. Today was supposed to be their day though, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Everybody else was excited, but for the two that were supposed to be wed, this was like a death sentence.
The music grew louder. ERIN’s chest tightened. Kai must be out there now, walking down the aisle and making his way toward the altar. It would be her turn next. She’d be forced to go out there, to walk among a crowd of thousands. She wanted to not care, wanted to not feel like that would affect her in any way, but for as much as she put on an attitude of nonchalance, she couldn’t stand being the center of attention. It also didn’t help that she had been forced into an overly exaggerated wedding dress that looked like some sort of flashy swan had thrown up on. It was way over the top, too flowy and much too long - even if it had been custom made to fit her body perfectly, the ends of the dress still flowed like a river behind her, a silken stream of pure white. It was disgusting.
Before she even knew it, she was suddenly being ushered to step outside. Her heart hammered in her chest, the music and the chattering of people only growing louder. This was it. She was being forced to marry a man she would never love. Forced to marry a man because she, for some reason, had been chosen as the rightful heir to the throne. Her life was ruined, and she had ruined Kai’s. This marriage was doomed from the start, and ERIN wished that Kai realized she had never wanted to wrap him up into such a mess.
ERIN did everything she could to drown out the sounds blasting around her. While the crowd had gone quiet to observe her walk down the aisle, the music blared louder than before. She tried to focus on what was ahead of her instead of the music, instead of the people. Slowly her eyes drifted upward, forward, noticing Kai already standing by the altar. Her throat felt like sand.
It both felt like forever and only mere seconds before she reached her soon to be husband. ERIN glanced at him, searching for any signs of expression on his face. She did her best to remain neutral, to not act out or do anything that would cause this wedding to go on any longer than it should, and she was sure Kai was smart enough to do the same, but even then, she couldn’t help but look to see if he had anything on his mind other than the same sense of dread and unease she herself was feeling.
