Waddup I don't know about y'all but I have some time off and I'm kinda freaking bored
Anyway, I had this idea to do a faerie roleplay. I'm really just in the mood for dark, vivid fantasy. The idea is not yet super fleshed out, but I thought I would post here and hopefully get some people to help with the concept.
Story ideas:
- a royal family as well as nobles, complex relationships within those groups. alliances, romances, arranged marriages, siblings, enemies, the whole nine yards
- a villainous force or maybe a plague that is striking the forest? I'm picturing trees oozing sap and dead birds dropping from the sky, along those lines
- faeries ride birds?
- it would be fun to come up with specific elements of what the faeries are like. possible ideas would be that perhaps there are certain types of faerie, like ones with butterfly/moth wings vs ones with wasp/beetle wings? perhaps certain types have different powers or live in specific parts of the forest like the canopy or the swamp or even underground. maybe there are evil tribes and generally good tribes?
General things to note:
- this will be a semi advanced to advanced roleplay, so keep that in mind if you are interested
- it won't be a small group (by design), but characters will hopefully fill complex roles that we can come up with while planning
I think that's about it. Again, this is not something I have totally fleshed out in my own brain. So please, feel free to spitball
Updated ideas:
Plot
A plague has struck the forest. Animals are falling sick. Swaths of forest are withering and oozing sickly sap. Most troubling of all is that the most magically powerful of the fae are suddenly losing their abilities. There is seemingly no explanation for the plague. As is to be expected, it has caused panic and fear among all the tribes. In an effort to find the root of the problem, the king assembles a team of fae to follow the leads toward the mysterious evil force.
What the four tribes don't know, is that their forest has been invaded. A new type of fae is now living among them, disguised as their own. These fae travel from land to land, causing destruction in whatever forest they land in. Their powers including stealing life force from animals, causing disease among living things, and even draining the powers of other fae. Their aim is to destroy the forest, giving way to a new cycle of life. They have judged the forest as needing to die in order to be reborn. And they are willing to destroy everything in order to accomplish their goal.
Faeries
There are four different type of fae. This generally relates to the natural habitat of the given group. Not only does "race" determine appearance, but it determines types of magical abilities. Of course there is a lot of variation within the races as well as between them. The hierarchy within a tribe is generally determined by the strength of a fae's power. All faeries look more or less like humans. The largest differences, of course, are in their height (the average height is about five or six inches) and the added addition of wings. Smaller variations include pointier ears, larger and more slanted eyes, and longer limbs. Fae, especially Higher Fae, can have more extreme coloring than humans. Examples include pink or lavender eyes, or completely black or white skin, or hair in brighter more unique colors. Lesser fae are considered more human looking, with coloring more in the neutrals. Here are the types of fae:
Flower: The "Flower Folk" are generally considered the most flamboyant and excessively beautiful of all the fae. They are born with colorful wings that camouflage them in the flowering meadows they call home. Their powers are within the realm of illusions and charms. They can trick the eye, toy with light, and sometimes disguise their own appearance. Flower folk are regarded as manipulative, vain, and self-important by the other tribes. Regardless, they have controlled the Wooden Throne for seven of the last ten dynasties. They can easily be identified by their appearances. Their wings are multi-colored. Their skin tones range from ivory white to the black of night. Either, however, aid in their striking looks completed by bright eyes and clever grins. They share their wings with butterflies, bees, and dragonflies.
Tree: Though a little more plain than the Flower Folk, the Tree Fae are quite powerful. They are the most militaristic and physically capable of the tribes. They like in the canopy, high in the branches of the tallest trees. Their numbers have long since pledged their allegiance to the crown as guards and knights. They are stereotyped as arrogant, courageous, and simple minded. Of course none of the assessments by other tribes are accurate for every fae. The faeries of the trees share their wings with wasps, moths, grasshoppers, etc. Powers are typically physical, like extreme strength and agility and so on.
Marsh/Swamp: These fae are attracted to water, living in reeds or under river rocks. They are considered the more inventive and mechanically gifted of all the faeries. They are heavily involved in trade of goods and are the only fae who regularly travel by water as well as by air. They are known to ride in boats and also travel on the backs of turtles or even alligators. Their appearances have evolved to disguise them in the marsh, and their palettes usually sit within yellows, ambers, greens, and blues. They share their wings with dragonflies, caddisflies, stoneflies, etc. Powers are within the realm of transfiguration, material manipulation, etc.
Earth: The earth fae are the most disenfranchised and oppressed of the fae. Despite having the same capacity for magic, they are regarded lesser for no particular reason. Other tribes might claim they are lowly, lazy, or criminal. They live partially underground, often creating comes in the roots of trees. They are known to ride mammals that roam the undergrowth. Their color palettes usually fall into the reds, greens, and neutrals. Their wings are shared with beetles, moths, etc. Powers are within the realm of curses and even telepathy and mind control.
