“Proud of you,” whispered Ten, as Fifty made it all the way up to the center of camp. “These cats will make things better. I...I promise.”
“Cowstar said in clans, we don’t choose our names,” said Ninety-Six, flicking his tail. “But that since we’re new, we can I we want. Didn’t Cowstar talk to you?”
As Thirteen made his way over, flopping all over the place like an overgrown coyote pup, it was doubtful that Six could’ve looked more embarrassed if she was trying.
“Thirteen...” she muttered between gritted teeth, as he took his place. “This is important. Can you just...take it seriously?”
Cowstar sat up a little straighter, letting everyone get positioned. “Alright,” she said, whiskers curling in happiness. “So, let’s get right to it - this is a joining of two clans, a welcoming of new members, and also, a naming ceremony. These cats have expressed to me their desire to take on Clan names to seal their place here, so...”
She beckoned to Ten first, who sat still and tall, pride radiating from her small body as she looked straight forward. “Ten. You have led these cats through unimaginable trials, despite your lack of experience with the outside world. For your bravery and your determination, I give you the name...Lionstrike.”

DEPUTY
She is destined to become leader of Roseclan and fulfill a prophecy that starclan will give Her. She will grow into a cat who will feel the urge to murder but she will never disobey the warrior code. She is loyal to her clan and would do anything to save them. As a kit she was different from the rest; she was always practicing her fighting skills and trying to be better than the rest. As an apprentice she was practicing even when she wasn't supposed to and even overhunting for the clan so other cats didn't have to do as much. She has grew into an extremely strong and swift cat and will continue to grow.
A light Silver-Blue She-cat with sapphire blue eyes. She is very slim and smallish for her age.

Fifty twitched an ear and managed a nod as he fought to catch his breath again. Leaving might be a problem, but hopefully the ceremony would take long enough for him to recover a little?
As Ten made her way up he raised his head and forced his thoughts away from his body so he could catch every word. Lionstrike....
It fit her, better than Cowstar could possibly know.
“Yeah, whatever.” Thirteen answered dismissively, his attention already wandering as Ten stepped up. “I’m totally serious. This is my serious face.”
There were a lot less of this Clan than he’d expected there to be, and most of them actually looked weaker than he was, which was surprising. Not that he believed that; his back still ached a little from Blazeclaw’s incredible skills, he’d just thought this was going to be like Home used to be. Loud and crowded and dark.
Seventh-Two glanced down at him, their ever-moving tail twitching and one ear forward, one back. They looked puzzled for a second, then blinked as though suddenly realizing something. “Oh! Oh. Yes. Cowstar told me all about that yes.” They said decidedly and looked forward again, watching the ceremony with the rapt attention of a kit.
“Rats.” They muttered suddenly. ‘That’s such a cool name.”

“Fifty,” she continued, turning her gaze to the sickly warrior on her other side. “Though I’ve heard cats say otherwise, it is foolish to think that there is any enemy as insidious and terrible as disease. You’ve fought something that you can’t see, that we can’t understand fully, and you’ve defeated it - your exhaustion and your coughing are nothing more than battle wounds, testifying to your strength of will. In light of your tenacity and your courage, I hereby give you the name...Brackenstep.”
“Bet yours’ll be cool too,” whispered Lionstrike, flicking an ear. “This cat knows what she’s doing.”

Brackenstep straightened up, raising his head in defiance of the way his chest felt tight and the air seemed to hesitate deep in his throat as he breathed.
Something flickered in his grayish eyes as Cowstar gave him his new name and his posture shifted forward, confidence seeping into the spot into the cavities his illness has worried away as he met her eyes and dipped his head, accepting the name.
“You think?” Seventy-Two tilted their head, hearing the next name given. “A warrior. I’m gonna be a warrior. We’re gonna be Clan cats...”

The ceremony continued, Cowstar bringing forward first Six, then Seventy-Two, then Thirteen, then, finally, Ninety-Six, all of them receiving names that the leader had chosen based on her information on the individuals, given to her mostly by their clanmates.
Six became Daisyleap, for her cheer, optimism, and energy.
Seventy-Two became Rabbitsong, for their mischievous, gregarious spirit.
Thirteen became Otterfrost, for his playful, yet laid-back nature, and his outgoing behavior towards even cats he’d never met.
And finally, Ninety-Six became Spiderpaw, for his soft, careful steps, his creativity, and for his enduring attention to the world around him.

Otterfrost was racing around and around the camp in a huge circle like an overgrown kit, his paws barely touching the ground as his long legs launched him forward at a speed he didn’t look like he should be able to keep up for as long as he was.
It was mostly excitement over his new status as a warrior, but it was also the feeling of the wind through his fur as he sped through it, the smell of the dust that puffed up behind him, and the fact that it was all his now. He had a new name to prove it.
Rabbitsong approached a Cowstar, their twitchy tail held in the air with the tip curled down like a question mark that matched the look in their blue eyes.
“Hey, do you have a minute?” They asked, pausing a respectful distance away, “I have a few questions, now that we’re officially one of you guys.”
“Congratulations!” Splashpelt approached his new apprentice, a genuine smile curving his expression. “I’m officially your mentor now, if you want me.”

Daisyleap, in comparison, was feeling rather nauseous about it all. What now? She didn’t know how to be a Clan cat. Would she have to fight other cats?
Would they kick her out if she didn’t pick things up fast enough? No, no way. Lionstrike wouldn’t let them, and anyway, that medicine cat seemed too nice to do something like that. Still, she didn’t want to end up useless.
“Of course,” said Cowstar, with a friendly flip of her tail. “This way - this looks like the leaders’ den, up here.”
The leaders’ den was up on a flat, rocky outcrop, inside a cave that was perched atop the flattened rock, overlooking the camp. It was a good spot - she had to hand t to whoever had lived here before.
Once inside - and once she’d taken a moment to revel in her new space - she turned, sitting down near the center of the floor. “I kind of expected you’d have questions. Fire away.”

“Hello.”
Hazelstreak approached one of the new cats....Daisyleap, now....who looked a bit more lost and worried than her clanmates did. She wasn’t sure what made her decide to interact with the she-cat, besides curiosity about exactly what had happened to her her group, but she went with her gut and offered the most welcoming expression she could summon up. “How are you doing with all this? It’s a lot, believe me I know.”
Rabbitsong peered around the space. They’d been in it many times before of course, but now with a seasoned clan leader sitting in the middle of it like a living legend, it felt different. They tilted their head slightly as they noticed the way the ground felt almost harder under their paws, at once more and less welcoming, then shook the thought away. That was ridiculous, they’d slept here before, it wasn’t any different now.
“How do Clans run things?” They asked, leaping straight into the questions buzzing through their head and meeting Cowstar’s eyes with their own piercing blue gaze. “There’s you, the leader, but who exactly are we supposed to be? What do we do? Do we have to do what we you tell us to, even if it’s something awful like killing someone? Also, what if we break the rules? Do you punish us? How? Oh, and what would happen if I killed you right now?”

Daisyleap was silent for a moment, staring past Hazelstreak as she tried to think of how she could possibly sum any of this up.
“I...don’t know,” she said, flicking the tip of her tricolored tail. “I guess it’s just really different. It’s been just Ten - I mean, Lionstrike - and the rest of us for so long, and now...well, no offense, but I kind of feel like a stranger in my own home.”
Cowstar’s whiskers twitched, and she relaxed a little as she realized they were more nervous than she was about all this.
“Well, first of all, a leader’s job isn’t to be a dictator,” she said slowly, shifting her paws so she was sitting more comfortably. “My job is to protect all of you, and to make choices that I think will keep you safe and happy. Any of you are welcome to question those choices at any time. We don’t do exiles here, and there are few rules to break, but if they are broken, the consequences will be what I and my deputy consider to be appropriate - an apprentice who slacks off his training to go find catmint, for example, might be stuck cleaning dens for a few days. And a cat who was to kill me, well...”
She paused, thoughtful.
“That’s never happened to us before. But we don’t believe in execution, if that’s what you’re asking.”

Hazelstreak didn’t reply right away as she considered the best way to answer.
“None taken.” She assured the other she-cat when she finally spoke, her tone thoughtful. “I mean, in a way, I suppose you are a stranger here right now. You’re a stranger to the life of a clan cat, and more specifically, to the life of a RoseClan cat.”
She hesitated again. Her voice carried a slightly different note to it when she spoke again, a little quieter and a little lower. “My parents weren’t from RoseClan originally either. My dad was a kittypet and my mom was a loner, and they only joined up after I was born. So if you’re wondering whether you belong here, that’s up to you, because we’ll accept you if you decide you do.”
She didn’t talk about that much. She wasn’t sure what made her do it now...she’d been thinking about the past a lot lately. Sometimes she tried to figure out how she got here, and sometimes she just...remembered it, like she was now.
Rabbitsong’s tail looped over their back like a husky’s, their large ears pricked forward to catch everything the leader said.
“That’s really never happened before?” They said as soon as she’d finished speaking, eyes and tone both sharp with curiosity. “Wow. Have you never had a leader bad enough you had to kill them?”
Another pause. “So how do deputies work? Could I become a deputy, or do you have to be born a clan cat? And what happens when the leader dies?”

Daisyleap straightened up a little, bolstered by the Clan cat’s words. “Yeah...you’re right,” she said firmly, though her ear position still gave away her apprehension. “I...yeah. Thanks.”
Cowstar listened patiently to the cat’s questions, realizing they had a lot of potential as a scout. They were going to need another one, ideally two now that they were trying to settle - she was going to start recruiting soon. She’d have to keep Rabbitsong in mind.
“A neighboring clan did have that problem,” she said slowly, shifting her paws as she tried to figure out how much she should divulge about their past with MoonClan. In case anyone from there showed up, she didn’t want there to be any gossip going around. “But they handled it in their own way. It’s never happened to us. And the deputy system is this - the deputy chooses their leader when the previous leader either dies, resigns, or is made to step down. That deputy can either choose themselves, or a different cat to be leader - if they were to choose themself, that would make it their responsibility to choose a deputy. And of course, any of you have as equal of a shot at being deputy as we do - you’re one of us now.”

Hazelstreak dipped her head, hiding her own small smile as the stranger’s reply warmed her. “Of course. You won’t have mentors since Cowstar made you warriors instead of apprentices, but if you want me to teach you anything like hunting or fighting, I would be happy to.”
Rabbitsong’s ear twitched, but otherwise, they might have been carved from ice.
A neighboring Clan? So there was more than one of these groups, and apparently enough of them for the leader to not be too shocked by living near another one. But from the way she talked about them, it was clear the two groups were completely separate, not at all like their own merging into RoseClan.
She also seemed hesitant to discuss their interactions, which made Rabbitsong suspect there was a lot more to the story then she let on. Interesting...and something to poke around about with some of the looser tongues, perhaps.
“Alright, one more question, and I’ll stop bugging you.” They continued, shelving the information neatly in their brain for the time being. “What happened to you guys? For being a strong, capable Clan, when we found you we probably could have beaten you in a fight, frankly.”

“Oh, that would be great!” said Daisyleap, brightening up instantly. “I was worried I’d kind of be a drag to you guys - Ten - I mean, Lionstrike - takes like this stuff like a cockroach to a bowl of food, but I’m just a kittypet, really.”
“That’s a fair question,” said Cowstar, giving them a nod. “Especially since you’re relying on us now. To make a long story short, we were attacked by dogs. Most of us were killed in the attack, and those of us who survived were displaced from our decades-old home and forced to wander in search of a new, safer place to stay. That search eventually took us here, but to be honest with you, not a moment too soon. I’m not sure how much longer we would’ve survived.”

Hazelstreak’s whiskers twitched. Daisyleap was nothing if not enthusiastic - a trait that would help her bridge the gap between herself and Clan life quicker.
“You might surprise yourself.” The warrior replied seriously. “Whether it comes ‘naturally’ to you or not, there’s no reason that you should be any less of a warrior than Lionstrike if you dedicate yourself to it.”
She tilted her head, indicating the depleted fresh-kill pile with a flick of her left ear. “Hunting, for example, takes skill and practice, not born talent. If you want, we could go now.”
Rabbitsong twitched visibly at the word “dog”, and their tail lashed, their claws sinking deep into the earth beneath them.
Then they let out a breath and focused, first on their claws relaxing into their sheaths, and on up under they managed to peel their ears off of their skull. The whole process took a matter of seconds, but it almost looked painful for them.
“I’m sorry.” They said quietly, then moved on, their brightly curious tone gradually returning. “I know I said that was it but what about that other Clan that lived near you? Did the dogs get them, too? Did they try to help you?”

Cowstar’s whiskers twitched. “I think that’s a story for another day. You did say ‘one more question’ didn’t you?”
She had noticed their rather extreme reaction to the word ‘dog’ - apparently, RoseClan wasn’t the only one with secrets.
Daisyleap’s eyes widened, and she straightened up even more, tail giving a lash of excitement. “Okay!! Yeah, I...that’d be great!”

Epilogue, Rain’s Part
(Across camp)
Cowstar sat next to Splashpelt, admiring the view of their new camp.
“I think we made it,” she said quietly, and heaved a small sigh, closing her eyes for what felt like the first time in weeks. “I...I really think we did. And we couldn’t have, without you. You...weren’t ready, when Creekfang died, and I’m sorry that all happened so quickly. But you’ve saved lives - you’re as much a legend as she was. I think she’d be proud of you.”
Blazeclaw had just taken a step towards Hazelstreak, tail lifted in greeting, when Adderleaf came around the corner, joining the two of them.
His whiskers arched in a weak smile, and he raised his own patchy tail. “Hey, guys.”
A leafy patch of dressing and bandages still covered his right eye, but his face no longer seemed totally drained of life. He’d been getting his strength back, bit by bit, but even so, this was the first time he’d been out of the medicine den.
The leaves near the edge of camp were rustling lightly, moving in the breeze but also crushed underfoot by not one, but two, cats.
The first of the two stepped into camp, tail high, walking with a crooked, yet practiced gait on three legs. He looked well - tall and broader since his time away, but slim.
“And so, then I told her that - “
He stopped short, so fast that the white cat behind him almost ran straight into him and had to back off fast, hissing a few choice curses under her breath.
“By the Moon...” muttered the tom, voice hushed with disbelief as his eyes fell on the cats - some familiar, some new to him - who inhabited this camp they’d stumbled upon.
Then, he ran. He ran and ran and ran through the camp, frantically scanning each face for the one he wanted to see. She was here...somewhere...she had to be.
She had to be.

Epilogue, Hawk’s Part
Splashpelt sat still next to his leader, gazing at the camp spread out in front of him. Cats moved through it like water through a river, giving it a life that made him think of home.
He closed his eyes for a moment, a small smile touching his mouth. “I like to think so. That she’d be proud that is, not that I’m a legend.” He replied, opening his eyes to give her a sideways look. “We couldn’t have made it without you, Cowstar. Thanks for sticking around.”
Hazelstreak caught sight of Blazeclaw a moment before she saw Adderleaf, and so her mouth hung open in the shape of a greeting that never reached her tongue,
She joined them, her two best friends, and it felt like something had finally slipped back into place that had been broken for a long time. The three of them, older now and with more scars maybe, but still together.
Still together.
There was a commotion behind her and she blinked, tensing as the moment broke with the thought of dogs and enemies swarming, and then her green eyes found him and every muscle in her body seemed to freeze her in place. Only her eyes moved, following him, refusing to look away for fear that he would be gone again when she looked back.
He was dead. She hadn’t let herself believe for a minute otherwise, she knew how the world worked. How cruel it was to anyone who told it ”no. This is mine. You can’t take this from me”
And he was running through the camp eyes frantic, searching...for what?
“Talon.” It was real as soon as she said it, and then she ran at him and leapt, her paws hitting his shoulder with enough force to knock him over. “Talon! Talon! Talon!”
She tried to think of so,thing else to say but his name was enough and she was laughing, pressing every inch of her fur into his until she could hear his heartbeat, quick as and sure as her own.

Nightpaw ran.
Not at first. At first he just moved, out of the camp and away from the eyes on his back. His paws carried him away from the sounds and the memories, one step after the other.
Then he was trotting, the wet earth slipping under his small feet. He didn’t know where he was going and he refused to think of the faces behind him. The world was big, wasn’t it? Surely there was enough room for him and the memories both, to coexist without touching.
Then he was running, his breathes deepening as his training kicked in. Ironically, the training he’d been given for the place he refused to allow in his mind. There had to be space enough to lose himself, to go so far and so fast that he would no longer be Nightpaw. He was simply be.
He focused on the earth under the rhythm of his movement, the air pulling insistently at his ears and tail. Running was a lot like flying, really. The only difference was where you fought the battle to keep moving, struggled to breath, and felt like you were nothing but the pounding beat in your chest.
He let his thought go for the first time since everything changed. He felt light as he went faster, lighter without his mind, and leapt instead of ran. Is this how birds felt? If it was, he vowed never to eat another one as long as he lived, never to rob a creature that free of its wings. He wished he was one of them, with nothing but the air to surround him, free of the earth and the leaves and the memories clinging to his fur like something poisoned rain.
But he wasn’t.
So he ran.

WHUMP.
And he did run...straight into another cat, who went head over heels, crashing into the nearest tree trunk.
“Agh....” he huffed, slowly getting to his feet and shaking his head, trying to see who he’d crashed into. “Firefly, what - “
Then he froze, eyes trained on the cat in front of him - a cat about his age, but more muscular. Better trained.
He cursed under his breath and began to back away, eyes trained on the stranger as he feared the worse. He’d been found.
“Okay, just...settle down. We can think about this,” he said to Nightpaw, taking another step back. Where were the others...

Ightpaw gasped as he collided with another body, one less solid than his own.
Which resulted in the other kit going flying, while Nightpaw only stumbled back a bit, thrown off balance.
“Woah, hey, take it easy.” He said quickly as the other kit backed off, tensed and clearly ready to be attacked. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t watching where I was going, I was just...”
Yeah. All that.
“Doesn’t matter. Are you ok?”

Sootpaw paused, confused, as he wasn’t immediately set upon by the cat, who was clearly a warrior-in-training.

“Nightpaw.” The apprentice said it without thinking about it, but for some reason, the word stung his throat. He licked his lips and tried again, more determined now. “I’m Nightpaw of RoseClan, warrior-training. Uh...who are you? Are you all alone here?”
“Soot?” A tiny black cat with large brown eyes emerged from the leaves, blinking in clear confusion as she looked between her friend and a stranger. “What are you doing? Who’s that?”

A sigh of relief escaped the fuzzy cat as Nightpaw introduced himself. It wasn’t the Queen after all. It was...somehow...a whole new clan.
“I’m - “
He paused as his friend came around the corner, slinking to his side and throwing the stranger a well-earned look of caution. “I dunno yet,” he whispered, then turned back to Nightpaw, straightening up a little. “This is Firefly. And I’m Soot. Yeah, we’re...it’s the three of us, us two and one more. That’s it.”

Nightpaw’s eyes widened a little as another cat came around the corner, giving the first one - Soot - yet another reason to be afraid.
He caught the flash of relief in Soot’s eyes as he explained where he was from, and wondered why. Maybe there was a loner group around that had caused his trouble?
“In that case, no offense, but you guys don’t really look like you’re doing very well.” He said carefully, hoping not to offend. But he had to point it out: they were thinner than they should be and he could tell, by their scars, that their life hadn’t been kind so far. “And my leader would love to meet you. If you wanted to see what a Clan looks like?”
Firefly glanced up at Soot, her left eyes bright with some emotion that was hard to place. Her right eye, as always, was nothing behind the deep slash running through it.
“Is it safe?” She whispered, eyeing the muscular stranger as she spoke. He looked older because of that, but she thought that if he was thinner he would be about the size Of Catch. “He doesn’t look like he wants to kill me...”
A sudden weight fell on Nightpaw’s shoulder and he went down with a startled cry, then rolled and kicked, training kicking in the moment the threat and him hit the ground. He lashed out with both back legs and heard a loud “oof” as the ball of orange was tossed away.
Catch hit the ground and rolled, then got to his feet slowly, mud streaked through his fur. He scowled at the stranger. “How did you do that?” He demanded. “I surprised you, you should have gotten pinned down.”

“Catch, wait! It’s okay, he’s...I don’t think he’s trying to hurt us. Nightpaw, I’m sorry about that - he was supposed to ambush anyone who cornered me, just in case....”
He paused.
“Well, yeah. Just in case.”
He glanced down at Firefly, the invisible weight returning to his shoulders as he saw the expression on her face. Nightpaw was right. They weren’t doing well. And he was responsible for these two, as the former warrior...he couldn’t turn down an offer like this.
He gave Firefly an encouraging glance - it’ll be okay! - then turned back to Nightpaw. “I...okay. We’ll take you up on your offer. But you better not be lying. I can fight...and for real,” he added, with a cursory glance at Catch’s streaky fur.

“Don’t worry about it, that’s smart. He caught me off guard.” Nightpaw got to his feet and offered Catch an apologetic smile, in spite of the new bruise on his shoulder. “I’m being trained to handle stuff like that, which is why I reacting so quick. You’re right Soot, you have to be ready just in case.”
A pang went through his as he glanced again at Firefly, her wide eyes watching him with something in between caution and interest. She looked, almost eerily, like a smaller Thornpaw...of course, that could have just been him.
“Okay!” He agreed eagerly, blue eyes flicking back up to Soot. He hadn’t expected them to go for it so quickly, but maybe they were more desperate that he’d thought. “I’m not lying, I swear. C’mon, it isn’t far.”
Probably. How far had he run? Time had sort of slipped away from him, and he noticed for the first time how far across the sky the sun had traveled. Oh well...
He took off, trotted in the direction of home. Fast, but not too fast, he’d rather not take breaks if he could avoid it.
Firefly smiled, encouraged by Soot’s look. “Okay.” She repeated, and took off after the Clan cat, her gait faster to make up for her shorter legs and her tail pointed straight up at the sky.
“I can fight for real.” Catch muttered, shooting a sour look at Soot. Just because he was born in Fancy Land....
“Wait, seriously? We’re just going with him?” He continued, raising his eyebrow as Firefly took off with no further hesitation. “What happened to ‘we’re all alone’ and ‘we can’t trust anyone’, huh? You were really serious about that.”

“We can’t trust anyone,” said Sootpaw seriously, following a ways behind Nightpaw as he began to lead them away to who knows where. “I still say that. But look at us. Do you really think...”
He paused, glancing back at Firefly to make sure she was keeping up.
“Do you really think we’re gonna make it much longer on our own? When was the last time you ate?”

“I don’t eat much.” Catch muttered. He knew Soot was right, but...couldn’t they figure it out by themselves? He didn’t like admitting failure, and that’s a lot what this felt like.
He sighed, giving in with a frustrated huff. “Yeah, fine, whatever. We can just leave if we want anyway, right?”

When the three of them finally arrived back at camp, Blazeclaw and Rainpaw were both waiting at the front entrance for them. Rainpaw’s face softened a little as he saw his brother, and then, without a word, he slipped back into camp, disappearing into the night.
Blazeclaw’s face didn’t soften at all, however. Her ears were angled straight forward, and the tip of her tail was flicking back and forth, back and forth, over and over as she watched his approach.
“Nightpaw,” she said sternly, as he came within talking range. “We have rules about apprentices leaving camp by themselves. Especially when we haven’t established a mentor system yet. What were you - “
Then she broke off, eyes widening as she spotted the three stragglers. “Who...who are these?”
Not giving Nightpaw a chance to explain, Sootpaw pushed forward, determined. “Pleased to meet you,” he said, ears tipped politely backwards in a reflection of the manners he’d been trained in. “My name is Soot, and this is Firefly and Catch. Your apprentice rescued us, and offered us sanctuary here, but we’re happy to leave if we’re not welcome. The last thing we want is to cause you trouble.”
