Cordelia had told her partner, Marcus, that she was going to take a little bit of a break. He was a decent guy and training with him was going well but she just needed a little bit of a break. She'd been training for the games at home but it was still a big deal and she needed to just get out of her own head for a little while.
Which was why she had gone and picked up a trident, the weapon of her home district. Even holding one made her think of her home. She stood and cleared her head as she practised with the weapon, the metal flashing in the air as it twirled in her hands. It moved like an extension of her arm. Cordelia was excellent with a trident, but of course she was nowhere near as good with any other weapons. She was getting the hang of spears so far in training but she could only hope she got her hands on a trident in the Games. She'd only feel truly comfortable if she was using a familiar weapon.

Cordelia heard a whooshing sound and heard a voice yelling for her to watch out. The blonde dodged to the side and watched as an axe flew past her at, admittedly, quite an impressive speed. She whirled around to see who was at fault for what happened, her eyes fixing on a blond boy. She was pretty sure she knew who he was.
"Yo, District 1," she said with a raised eyebrow as she approached the boy "you trying to get ahead of the game or something? Watch where you're throwing stuff."
He was a career like her, right? Surely he must understand that weapons are sharp and you shouldn't throw them at people you don't want to kill.

So, no apology? Yeah, she'd been rude, but in all fairness, she had almost died. Never mind, what had she expected anyway? The Games was no place for kindness or understanding.
"Okay, well that I will apologise for," Cordelia said, "I got too focussed on my practising, needed something to take my mind off things."
He could see her sizing her up, shamelessly trying to figure her out. Well, she supposed there was no point being subtle about it in this kind of situation. One of them could end up killing the other. Which was why she sized him up too.

Alexander crossed his arm over his chest and stayed near the edge of the training room. He eyed the other competitors as he sized up who would be a threat and who would be easy to kill. Granted, anyone could end up as the Victor. Although, seeing a few of them fail at the training stations did give him some confidence.

Wow, this boy was really desperate to figure out if she was a threat in the arena. Interesting. Was he already maybe a little threatened and he needed to observe her training to figure out how good she was?
That was okay, she’d show him. She laid her trident down; the one she held was for melee and not for throwing. And then she went to select herself a new weapon. Throwing knives? No, careers liked those too much, she’d fade into the background if she used those. Bow and arrow? Not impressive enough. All that was left was a spear, which she had been practising with before. She’d gotten used to it now, adjusted the way she held it to accommodate the difference in weight between it and a trident. And she was pretty happy with how she was doing now.
So she went with the spear to stand in the space Hagan had left her and focused once again, preparing to throw. She moved into the right stance, fixed her eyes on the target, and she was ready. As she threw, she pretended the spear was a trident, moving like an extension of her arm. And she grinned with glee as landed at the centre of the target. Clearly her career training, and her training with Marcus, were paying off.
“Alright,” she said as she retrieved her weapon, “let’s see how you do when I’m not in your way.”

“Pretty much,” she said with a chuckle “not even the careers really have good odds, because most of the time they survive until the end and one of them backstabs the rest of them and wins. But that’s the whole point of the Games, I guess. The districts would just rebel if they just straight-up executed 24 random kids every year. And that’s all this is, really, if you think about it. A big, showy execution for a crime committed 100 years ago.”
But they would have to participate just like everybody else and not make waves. Everyone knew the Games were awful, but the Capitol were vicious to anyone who said so. Plus they were probably listening to Cordelia and Marcus now. She hadn’t said anything really bad about the Capitol yet, she didn’t think, but she might have if their conversation had continued. And that wouldn’t have been good for her or Marcus.
When he held up the spear, the girl nodded.
“Yeah, I probably could. I’d just have to practise a bit with it to get used to the weight difference. What about this makeshift bow? Could you use that? With a few arrows of course.” Marcus tilted his head as he thought about what she said. "Maybe it would be good for the districts to rebel. Although I guess that's what got us into this whole mess..." He trailed off. He shouldn't be talking about this type of stuff in the training area. Who knew who was listening. And the last thing he wanted was to tick off the game makers. Turning his attention back to their makeshift weapons, he smiled proudly as Cordelia said she could probably use his spear. When she showed him the bow she had made, he laughed and shrugged, "Well, seeing as I haven't had much practice with a normal bow, I figure I could probably get used to anything and not know the difference."

Ash frowned slightly at his reaction to her news. She knew that nobody would want a sibling in the games. She didn’t want sympathy, but maybe even just sharing that little bit would help her partnership with Jaxon. At his question, she shrugged and looked over at her brother. “I hope so. I think... I think Joel will be willing to help us, but I have no idea about his partner,” she said. Later she could talk to Joel. See how his partner was and if he was willing to work with her and Jax. Jax thought for a moment, then followed her line of sight to where her brother was. Clearly, Joel was a formidable tribute. Perhaps it would be worth their while to team up with he and his partner, at least for a while. "Do you want to go meet them? Maybe we could work together, at least, for a little while that is." The idea was risky, but he figured they had less of a chance of crossing each other since siblings were involved.
