Plot belongs to ValkoinenLeuka , just posting it here for reference ^-^ Old Promises: A young heir is presented with an arcane creature, captured by a hunting party that came across it by accident. The creature confides in the heir that it can’t remain in captivity and that if it's freed, the heir will never know danger and they will always have a powerful ally to call upon. The heir frees the creature, and as they grow, they write the encounter off as a dream or childish imaginings. Then later, when it comes time to act on their title, danger strikes, and the creature moves to fulfill its promise. Characters: Mikael "Mika" Cyence Mikael "Mika" Cyence - 24 - Mika stands barely 5'5" with dark freckled skin and shoulder-length black hair. He has bright blue eyes, and he's had to wear glasses to see properly since he was a child but even now he often forgets them until he sits down to read or study. His attire changes frequently depending on the situation and the company he expects to be around. If he has the liberty to dress how he pleases, odds are he’ll choose something simple that won’t get ruined by a little dirt or sand. No matter how he’s expected to dress, he shows a preference for blues, lavender, and soft pinks. Mika is a noticeably nervous man. As the youngest child in the family, he was previously sheltered from the dangers and knowledge of what it cost to act as a region’s ruler. As the years went on and family began disappearing, he came to the unfortunate understanding that those who’d vanished would not return. Despite his nerves and anxiety, he manages to remain a fairly patient and gentle person.
Outis Outis - Unknown Age - Outis is a creature meant for the darkest forests of the world. The only human thing about him is his face and arms, which are ordinarily keep hidden under a mask of bark and a cloak of moss. The most many people see of his human features are his unnatural amber eyes. Sharp, twisted horns rise above caracal-like ears, though one has a long scratch down the side. Outis stands on two cat-like haunches covered in sleek, black fur. He tends to avoid contact at all costs but won't hesitate to make an appearance if someone he deems worthy of his attention wanders through his territory. He survives mostly on the land, eating both meats and berries as a human would, though he uses his ability to craft illusions and induce pain to help him hunt. There are rumors that Outis consumes other's pain to strengthen his own magical abilities, though those who see the creature are never able to clarify anything.

Alright, found it just fine. I'll get a sheet up tonight, and also important question, do you want to start out with the young heir meeting and soon freeing the creature and then skip a few years to their next meeting, or should we start with the creature already returning to fulfill the promise?

Sounds good. I'll hopefully have my sheet up in a few hours depending on when I can finish a report.
Hmm... I think starting out with their first meeting will be best?

That looks great! I just added my character to the main post. Let me know if anything is unclear, I don't use arcane creatures often xD

(Since I poofed last night, I can start xD. If you don't mind me asking, what time zone are you in? I'm in Mountain)
Outis knew something was wrong the moment the birds stopped singing. Though it was high noon and the filtered sunlight streamed through the thick green canopy above, the forest was still. Outis wasn't one to easily grow skittish but he was wise enough to know when he needed to move. Using his moss covering, he slowly started creeping among the brush. Humans. The entire place was starting to reek of their rancid, unbathed stench.
Hunters weren't unusual, though Outis rarely allowed them to get this close. He couldn't even detect where the smell was originating from in the still air. A faint rustle forced him to stop. They were nearby but his weak sight revealed nothing. It wasn't until the creatures were on him that he could recognize the harsh, decorative red bracer of the royal hunter. The man reeked like pure bile to Outis' senses, staining him permanently of the creatures he'd killed in the past. In desperation, Outis threw a horrid illusion towards the closest man, sending him to his knees.
But there were too many. A single, powerful dart sent the world black. Outis was impervious to everything as the party dragged them to wherever they had come from.

Mika realized too late that he'd left his glasses beside his bed that morning when he and his siblings were summoned to the throne room. It wasn't like they had seats of power on their parents' council yet, they held no authority at the throne at this age, but he dreaded being late to respond and he forsook his glasses to reach the throne room with the rest of his siblings. They were all lined in a row from eldest to youngest, with Mika dead last next to one of his father's generals. At this point, he had only learned a small handful of faces amongst his parents' council, so he didn't know the name or importance of this man in particular.
He looked briefly to his older brother next to him, about to ask why they were all here, but his attention was quickly taken to the doors as they were pulled open by the guards. He recognized the royal hunter quickly and realized that something large and bloody would likely follow. He wanted to leave. He never liked what the royal hunter presented to them, and he always made such a big show about how great it was he put an arrow between a beast's eyes or how he'd taken the head of some monster. He gave a desperate look to his eldest brother at the other end of the line and to his mother in hopes one would see and give him permission to leave.
No such luck, he was ignored in favor of the hunter's speech. Mika tried to ignore the man's words and look away, afraid he might have something already dead in his hands. The brother next to him saw this and pinched him to put him to attention. Now he noticed him, sure. He lifted his head and stood straight, relieved that the hunter looked clean and he wasn't just holding his trophy up like he had a few times before. He hadn't been listening until he heard the hunter say the word "alive."
The hunter waved his hand back toward the door and Mika's eyes followed instinctively. With the guards still holding the doors open, the hunter's team brought the cart forward into the throne room. How they'd gotten permission to do this, Mika couldn't imagine. But he didn't care about that aright now. There was a cage on the cart, and something big inside. He could hear the clinking of chains as the cart moved, but from however the creature was laying, he couldn't see how it was restrained.
What was it? It looked so bizarre to him. He could see horns, fur, hair, and skin, but nothing was too clear without his glasses. He could feel his brother at his side turning tense and he realized whatever thing was in that cage couldn't be good.

Outis drowsily started to stir during the Hunter's dreary monologue. The small metal cage was barely large enough to hold him as he laid humiliated, on display for the world to see. The audacity.... He could remember the days when humans feared his kind, treating them with the utmost respect. Their dwindling unbelief had caused contentions, sending Outis out to the quietest parts of his forest.
The cart lurched into motion, sending Outis scrambling for purchase. The human stench only grew as he was dragged into a larger, more extravagant room. Blinking against the flickering lights, Outis lifted his head enough to stare sharply at the Hunter. The man would suffer for this disgrace, he'd make sure of it. He told him as much in the harsh, long-forgotten language of the arcane before shifted his attention to the other humans in the room. Many of them held the same rancid smell as the Hunter, evidence of the pain they've caused. And they were all staring at him.
Outis tried to drag himself to his feet. The wooziness in his head still hadn't cleared but he wasn't going to lay like one of their trained dogs. The chains and the cage barely allowed him to straighten into a sitting position but it was better. He fixed his gaze again on a human, picking one of the smaller, defenseless creatures at the head of the room in a silent threat.

Mika couldn't hear what the hunter was saying now, he was too focused on the thing in the cage. He probably wasn't missing much, just the hunter stroking his own ego as he showed off the beast. He watched it sit up and try to move about. He could swear it was looking toward him, he could feel what had to be a bitter, resentful gaze on him and he took a step back instinctively. The general to his side caught he movement and quietly scolded him to stand at attention. This was enough to get the attention of his brothers, but thankfully not too many others. They would tease him over this for weeks, he was sure of it.
He heard his father's voice fill the silence when the hunter finally stopped floating and he looked toward the twin thrones where his parent sat. His mother didn't seem to like the beast either, with her nose wrinkled and her eyes narrowed. That was the look she gave certain ambassadors she disliked. But his father didn't seem bothered by the creature, and instead he praised the hunter's skill and courage. Maybe this sort of flattery was why the hunter kept bringing terrible things back to the castle.
Mika frowned. Well he thought he'd only frowned because apparently the look on his face caught the general's attention again and he received a sharp nudge for it with a hissed warning to behave himself.
His father went on, uninterrupted. "Keep it caged until it's properly broken. Until then, it stays in the cells under the barracks. Keep it under a rotating watch."
Wait? They were keeping the beast? No, why would they try something like that? This wasn't a pet, this was something wild and dangerous. They wouldn't lock a dragon in the cells, why try it on something else that seemed just as deadly and spiteful?
Now finally after so many warnings, his father seemed to take notice of the look of horror on Mika's face. He didn't look too pleased either. Not from what Mika could tell at this distance, anyway. With his face angled at Mika now rather than the beast, he continued speaking.
"The creature will serve as a training aspect for my youngest until it's bested and slain, as his brothers and sisters trained before him."
This made his heart catch in his throat. His siblings had all trained against lesser beasts, things that could be muzzled and restrained easily. Even if it had been ages since a living beast had been brought in for the training rites, he didn't want to be anywhere near this thing.

Outis has been enough humans to make out most of the conversation and he wasn't enjoying a single word that spilled out from the Hunter but he kept his cold gaze fixed. He flicked an ear when the human shifted, knowing that he was having the effect he wanted. Even if he had power over one person in this room, he was at an advantage. Interestingly enough, the human was reprimanded for the small movement. How dare they try to control fear in his presence when they should all be cowering before him.
He grew so lost in his annoyance that Outis barely noticed that silence had filled the room until it was broken by one of the leaders praising the horrendous actions of the Hunter. His cloak could barely hide the bristling fur along his spine. Adulation was poison and here the humans were, pouring it out among each other and drinking merrily.
They were just as vile as he remembered. As they smelled.
The tension in his muscles only grew as the leader announced his ruling. No, he'd never conceded to being a pet. He let out a growl as the Hunter signaled to his men to do as their leader as asked, the noise surprisingly human-like but filled with just as much violence as mountain lion's cry.
He was ready to use what little power remained in his blood to bring half the court howling to its knees but the Hunter's sweeping, smug bow towards his leader snapped him back to focus. How satisfying would it be to slip out beneath his nose? The human would be humiliated in front of his leader. Outis forced himself to calm and resumed his glaring as the cart staggered towards the doors.
Nightfall would come and he would be free once more.
He kept reminding himself so as the hunters dragged him to the barracks, where they lowered his cage out of the cart and left him in the darkness of the cell.

Between his father’s statement about the training rites and the glare from the beast in the cage that he could still feel on him, Mika couldn’t stop himself from starting to fall back again. The general caught him again, but he pulled against his grip this time. He couldn’t be here for this. Whatever was in that cage… he knew it wasn’t just some simple garden-variety animal. His siblings hadn’t trained against anything like that. He wasn’t sure why his father was acting like this was in the same field.
He turned back toward the door. He wasn’t going to stay here. The creature was being taken out of the room anyway, this gathering was over now, right? There was nothing to gather about with it gone. He walked out into the hall toward his room.
It was locked away in the cell. In it’s cage. That was secure, right? It couldn’t do anything caged in like that.
He needed to actually see it. He needed his glasses, and to actually see what this thing was. There had to be an answer. Though the thought of that hateful look still made him anxious. He didn’t really want to have to face it again. But he still felt like he needed answers here.
It took him a fair walk to get up to his own chambers and retrieve the glasses from his bedside table. He was sure he’d get a summon back to the throne room soon enough, and he’d get an earful for his behavior. He might as well wait on that and then see if he could get over to the barracks to see the beast.
He’d waited i his quarters for almost an hour, but no summon came. He wasn’t sure why, but this seemed like enough time to wait for things to settled down a little bit at the barracks. He left his room with his glasses on his face this time and he began walking toward the soldiers’ training ground. He knew what doors to go through, and technically the guards couldn’t deny him access to the area, even if he was only a child.
Sure enough, as he reached the edge of the soldiers’ training grounds and got closer to the barracks, one of the captains approached him.
“Young Mikael, what are you doing out here?” He asked.
“I’m meant to see the beast in the cell.” Mika answered. He was still admittedly nervous, but he was doing his best not to show it.
The captain was quiet for a split second as he considered that. Whatever he was thinking, he ended up giving Mika a nod. “Very well, I’ll walk you there.”
Mika had started to nod in response, but the captain just led him into the building, through the halls and down the stairs to the cells. These weren’t proper prison cells, just for temporary holding, so there wasn’t anyone down here aside from the creature they’d imprisoned. The captain stopped in the hall, letting Mika move ahead to the last cell on the row.

Outis grew more restless as the evening grew later. He belonged out under the moonlight, alone with his wanderings. He had managed to doze off for a few minutes, which helped clear his head of the groggy after-effects of the dart. Good. He needed to think.
The chains rattled against the metal cage as he tested their strength. He was strong, but not strong enough to rip through whatever material these strange constraints were made of. The Hunter was experienced. Outis would have to use his own years to outsmart the man. At least until he could take care of him for once and for all.
The air started to stink again as the humans approached. Though the odor wasn't as tainted by vile deeds, the sweet fear was strong. Good. Finally the respect he deserved. Outis shifted to face the cell door and pulled his cloak around himself. He'd wait, examine, then strike.
Admittedly, he wasn't expecting the smaller human to come into his blurry feline-view but not even a blink betrayed his surprise. He let out a rumbling warning growl, just to test the creature's nerves. The human was a weak link. A well protected one, at that. Outis could work with that. He just needed enough energy....

As Mika approached the cell, he could feel his hands starting to shake. To keep them still, he just held one hand in the other and let them sit in front of him as he stood. He’d seen his mother take this stance sometimes when she seemed nervous, and it usually seemed to work for her.
Now the only trouble would be actually looking at the creature in front of him. He had his glasses, he could see it clearly. But he almost didn’t want to look up. He could feel the thing’s eyes on him, and he was just stuck in place. Whether it was a spell, an instinct, or just a bad panic response, he had no idea.
He looked back at the captain who’d walked with him. The man was waiting for him, arms crossed and watching impatiently. He wasn’t sure what to do or say with him here, and he looked back at the ground in front of his feet.
He tried to lift his head again, and he could only get his gaze near the creature. It looked bigger than he’d thought, but from what he could make out, the actual beast was obscured by moss and wood. It had clothes? Well, he shouldn’t be too surprised at that, but for some reason, it seemed a little odd to think of clothing made from anything other than normal fabrics.
He wanted to speak, to say something, but he couldn’t think of what he should say at first. He could feel the captain turning even more impatient, and after a few minutes longer, he could hear the man’s footsteps as he found a place to sit. He was still within earshot, but now out of sight.
“Do… do you have a name?” He asked quietly.

Ignoring the weaker human for a moment, Outis examined his companion. The creature was twitchy, impatient. Someone who could be easily distracted if needed.
Filing away that useful bit of information for later, he watched the smaller human examine him. Outis huffed but was glad for his cloak. He wasn't meant to be gawked at. He should be worshiped and appreciated for the being he was. That's why he never cared for humans and their brazen egos. And here it was, trying to communicate with him in its tongue, no regards for the common language of its ancestors.
It took Outis a moment to recognize what the human was saying and to figure out the words he needed to use to respond. "My true name is lost to your kind. I was once known as Outis." His voice, though able to communicate in modern human, was filled with the savagery of beasts and pauses of older languages.

Even the creature's voice was enough to make Mika feel cold and anxious. It frightened him. He wasn't sure how to reply. Was he supposed to ask about the old name, or just use Outis? Was Outis the true name? He couldn't begin to guess.
"I... oh... alright, um, are you hungry? Have you eaten?" That was how people were supposed to be polite, right? This was typically how his mother greeted guests, though there was often a spread of food available when she said it. He wasn't even sure how to follow up if the beast was hungry?
What would it eat? His fear told him it probably wasn't too picky about what was and wasn't edible. It had the air of a hunter, and how the royal hunter had gotten the upper hand on this creature, Mika might never know. No matter how the man claimed he did it, he didn't think he'd ever believe him. All the stories that hunter insisted were true were too far-fetched, even for a child like Mika.

Outis snorted at the human's stammering. Not moving his unblinking eyes away, Outis replied testily, "Why don't you stick your hand inside and find out?" Even if he was starved, the human's terror alone would've been enough to sate his appetite. Though a few fingers would be a pleasant snack.
He didn't understand why the human was even there before him. To mock him? It was failing horribly. Perhaps it intended to attempt to carry out the leader's orders in an amusingly feeble display of idiocy. Outis slowly continued collecting the human's fear, savoring it as he waited for the right moment to weave something horrid. He was depleted by the earlier struggle, yes, but Outis would never allow himself to be completely helpless. A moment was all he needed....

Mika had almost for a brief second considered the creature's suggestion. He caught himself and couldn't help tucking his hands a little closer to his body as though willing them to stay still and out of the beast's reach.
"If you're hungry, I can have someone bring you something. J-just tell me what you can eat." Mika could only hope that Outis's hostilities were from both being caged and unfed. He understood the beast had every right to be angry and mean, but he really really wished he'd at least give him a straight answer. Well, if anything in the books he'd been reading was to be believed, it was that old beings from the woods almost never gave straight answers. But why was a yes or no so hard to give if he was being offered something to eat.
"Sir, that's quite enough." The guard said, drawing Mika's attention from Outis. "You've seen enough of the thing, you'll see plenty more of it at training."
Mika frowned and shook his head, a new fear taking hold of him. "I don't want to train against him. Just look at him. Look at me!" He festered between Outis and himself, hoping the guard would at least see how one-sided a fight with this creature would be.

Outis internally winced at the idea of a stenchy human trying to prepare him any food but couldn't resist making the most outlandish request he could come up with on the spot. "The nest of a forest owlet and frost salt from the northern seas." Both were near impossible to get, even by his standards, and have long been coveted dishes among human royalty. "If I was truly ravished, you wouldn't be lingering."
He shifted his attention to the guard's voice, hackles rising. Outis? A training toy? Disgraceful. In the few seconds of silence following the smaller human's response, Outis leaned forward, just slightly. In a quiet hiss, barely discernable, he offered, "You're wiser than you look. A human of words. Perhaps I can spare you, on one condition."

Mika frowned quietly as Outis started listing his preferred foods. He had no idea how to get ahold of such things. Cold salt and a pile of twigs that a bird had lived in? Why so specific and... well... it didn't sound tasty. Salty sticks... If he'd been a few years older, maybe he would have understood the value of the things the creature had requested, but at this point, he was only just understanding the costs of a few luxury items.
As the beast started talking to him again, starting to say something that sounded like it was going to lead to a contract of some kind, the guard stood upright and snapped at Outis, making Mika flinch back. "Shut up, beast, before I come take that stupid mask away and bust your head a few times." He hissed, putting a firm hand down on Mika's shoulder. "You've spent enough time down here as it is. I'll walk you out, come along."
Mika wasn't sure how to argue. He still hated that the creature would be locked in the cell and then later used for combat training. That was what the straw-filled dummies were for! He didn't need something that clearly belonged out in the woods for target practice.
The guard sighed as he felt Mika resist his guidance. "You've got nothing to worry about. The thing won't barely be able to stand by the time your training comes around." He promised.

Outis shifted in his caged as he tensed, ready to throw his energy at the guard if needed. He was being generous as it was; the human's filthy, stained soul was enough to try his patience. The smaller one at least had some respect. Ignoring the guard's threats, he continued, "I will come to your aid at the moment most dire if you linger without your companion. His presence is most torturous." Outis just needed a little more energy from the smaller human's worries before he could cast a believable illusion. Something that could help him silently make his way back to the stillness of his forest and away from the maddening chaos of the human world.
There was one time humans would always come to him for favors, begging for their desires. As the years passed and the creatures lost all sense of reasoning, Outis and the Ones like him turned their backs and reclaimed distant territories. Never would Outis have expected to covenant with the beings again but if what he understood was true, and that the Hunter was pursuing his kind, the situation would need a few exceptions. Besides, with a human as weak as that one, Outis would likely fulfill the contract within a day and be on his way.

(Hello and happy new year. )
Mika would have replied if given the chance, but the guard began pushing him toward the hall. "You've been down here long enough, your tutors will be waiting for you by now. Go on, move yourself along." He pushed the back of Mika's shoulder again, starting to guide him down the hall.
Despite the fact that Mika technically had authority over the captain of the guard, he was afraid to argue. What would he do if the guard told his father he'd been listening to the beast in the cell speak? What would his father do? It already seemed mad enough he'd ordered such a thing to be a tool for training. He didn't want to risk anything else for now. Instead he simply paid more attention as the guard lead him out of the barracks, tracking which doors lead to with halls. He'd find his way back on his own tonight, and he'd figure out what to do.

(Hello! Happy New Year to you too! I hope it's been good so far)
Outis watched the guard usher the smaller creature out, hackles raised and a low growl rumbling in his throat. Coward. Interrupting a civil conversation. If history proved anything, there's nothing humans disliked more than rationality. No matter; he didn't need a human's assistance getting out. He just needed the right moment, when attention grew lax.
He turned in his cage, trying to shift the chains into a more comfortable position. Already, the harsh metal was chafing his skin and pulling at his fur despite his attempts to stay still. He longed for the cool evening breeze and the settling of the forest as creatures, magical and nonmagical alike, prepared for the night. Patience. He needed patience. He was used to waiting eternities, a few hours would be nothing. Outis started to quietly test his bindings, looking for any weaknesses.

After being sent out of the barracks, Mika had been able to come to the conclusion that whatever was going on with this strange creature was wrong. More so than he probably realized, he knew. There were still plenty of things he didn't understand, and he at least knew that much. He also understood that nothing good would come of keeping that creature locked up in a cell.
He'd considered just asking his father to order the beast set free, but with the way his father spoke about the creature when the family gathered for dinner, he already knew what his answer would be. He'd seen the look on his mother's face in the throne room, she was disgusted by the creature, and she didn't think highly of it. She wouldn't offer any real compassion to it, nor would she go against his father's wishes. He'd just have to figure it out himself.
Mika waited until after the family had retired to their rooms for the evening. It wasn't exactly late enough for them to go to sleep, but by now the only light through was from candles and torches. The walk from the main castle to the barracks in the dark was unsettling, especially considering that if such a beast had been found in the woods he wondered where else they might dwell.
He found his way to the building, though he had to move slower than usual. It wasn't hard to figure out where the guards were by the sound of their armor clanking with their movements, it was only a matter of avoiding them and staying quiet. Soon enough he found himself down in the hall outside of the cells once again. Again he was only reminded how unnerving the glow from within the mask's eyeslots could be.

The cage. Even the bars were tainted by terror, the purest kind of fear, presumably left by whatever poor being had been trapped in them before. Though something else lurked beneath the metal, intertwined within the metal rods. Outis shifted his weight, trying to get a better feel of the material.
He recoiled back, sharp claws screeching against the cage, as he managed to twist his bare palm onto the metal. The cursed creatures had somehow Marked them with the ancient language, making the metal's very essence vile. It was no wonder Outis struggled to gather his strength. He was barred by some infernal, archaic hex that no human should ever have access to.
What had they thrown him into?
Calm. He needed to remain calm. He'd have his forest soon. Outis took a deep, huffy breath only to catch scent of the smaller human. He snapped his attention up towards the door. "Returning so soon? Have you given much thought to our little deal?"

Mika bit his lip when the creature brought up the deal. Honestly he wasn't completely certain what that deal meant, but he did know he didn't want the beast to be trapped here under the barracks. He was also plenty aware that Outis wasn't exactly happy about the situation in the first place, and Mika was wary of his wrath. Not to mention there was a very good chance his father would eventually find out that someone had let the beast out of the cage, and he'd been the only one who'd been adverse to keeping Outis here. He was almost more afraid of what his father could do.
"I did, a bit." Mika answered quietly. "And I want to let you out of here. But I'm scared someone's going to get hurt if I do." He admitted, looking away from Outis. Whatever it was that made him so uneasy about holding eye contact with him was back. "Would it be okay if I asked for something a little more on your side of the deal? If I walk you out to the gate, will you promise me you won't come after my family? Or anyone else in the castle? I know what the hunter did was wrong but no one else should get hurt because he wanted my father's attention."

"Clever creature," Outis said, practically purring. He shifted from his crouch to sit in a more relaxed manner. The humans usually relaxed when he did, much to their folly. But this one was worried he would be a harm so Outis needed to play his cards carefully if he wanted out tonight. "If you free me from these bonds, I will not harm any human as we go to the gate. In exchange, I will aid you in a moment dire." Normally he would drive a harder bargain, filled with more loopholes than the few he created, but the cage was maddening. It would be the first thing to go as soon as the creature let him loose.
Trying to distract the creature from the deal's fine print, Outis added, "Why are you associated with a human as foul as the Hunter, with hands stained darker than a moonless night. Can you not smell his sins?" Outis tilted his head slightly, feigning interest.
Stupid. Groveling before a human again was absolutely stupid. But short of touching the hexed bars of the cage, there was no possible way for him to get enough energy to force his way out. He could try to terrify the little creature but the human seemed cooperative for now. That method would serve as a last resort, should the creature refuse the deal.

Mika couldn’t help feeling a bit more assured he’d made the right choice at Outis’s praise. He didn’t seem quite as tense in his shoulders at least, and he grew more certain that the creature could not lie to him about their agreement. He nodded along as Outis rephrased their bargain.
He was about to tell the creature that he could agree to this, but Outis’s questions about the hunter made him frown. “I’m sorry, I don’t know what you mean by his smell. I don’t really like what he does, but he’s a part of the court and I don’t have any say who’s in the court. But I can get the key and let you out on those terms.” He said, already starting to go down the hall. He knew where the guards kept the keys, and there didn't seem to be many patrols on this level of the barracks at this hour.
