The Club Fair
He was always sad to see summer go, but this year in particular, the parting was notably sad. He'd had a great couple of months; He'd passed his driving test, he'd gotten a job, he'd hung out with his friends, he'd gone to parties, and he'd spent most of his time with Macie. Now, all he had to look forward to was school - no parties, no late nights in the woods, and no girlfriend. But just whose fault was that, hm?
He didn't like the way he had ended things with Macie, but right now, what could be done? Besides, was it even that big a deal? They'd had a summer romance, like in the movies, and they'd broken up a week ago, at the edge of Autumn, just like in the movies. They were teenagers, they weren't meant to take things seriously, right? That's what he told himself, instead of thinking about how hurt she'd looked when he'd ended things. They'd gotten together right before school broke for summer, at one of those big parties in the fancy houses the popular kids throw every now again. Although Wally considered himself, and knew he was considered by others to be, somewhat popular, he didn't exactly hang with the right crowd to make the final cut into the school's elite. The Cryptid Club Kids were weird. But he liked weird. That's why he'd gotten with Macie.
He never wanted to hurt her but he just didn't feel anything towards her. Not like he was meant to, anyway. An uncomfortable feeling washed over him as he headed down the packed halls, a thought on the edge of his mind he wanted to ignore. Shoving those thoughts to the side, he tried to just focus on the school day. Things had been awkward the last few days, no denying that. When they'd started dating, it was great because then they could spend all summer with their friends and still be romantic, but now that they'd stopped, there was a rift in the group. People were annoyed at Wally and he didn't blame them; he would be annoyed too if someone had dumped his friend and not given her any reason at all as to why. And it wasn't just the Club either, there were Macie's three brothers too. Wally really did not want to get them any angrier then they already were.
Hoping Stevie wouldn't kill him on sight, Wally pushed his way through the crowd of freshmen gathered at the doors of the hall and looked from stall to stall for his own Cryptid Club. He could remember being a freshman but he didn't remember being so small, they were like little babies. His own sister, Adele, was now a freshman and was here somewhere, (being the gremlin that she is, she was probably torturing some poor club leader). He gave a little wave to his captain as he passed the baseball stall but didn't stop, eventually making it over to the spookiest stall in the school.
"Hey Stevie," He waved, trying his best to sound casual, "Stall's looking nice." He shifted his backpack off one shoulder and slung it gently to the ground, "Any interest from anybody new yet?"

Macie had just gotten out of her class when her phone buzzed with a text. Looking down to see Stevie's name on the screen, she stepped aside and read the text.
You going to come today?
She hesitated for a moment. She did want to go, even if it was just to support her friend. She wasn't sure if anyone else would show up and she didn't want to leave Stevie to deal with the crowd herself. There was only one thing stopping her.
Wally.
She knew there was no guarantee that her ex would show up, but she wanted to avoid him for now. She hadn't talked to him or texted him or snapchatted him or called him or even liked any of his pictures on social media since the breakup. No, the first couple days had been spent locked in her room. She hadn't even got a simple explanation for the breakup. Not even one of those cheesy 'it's not you, it's me' things. Nothing.
She'd only began participating in life again when the school year began and she had avoided Wally with every chance she got. She didn't even know what she'd say to the boy if they did come face to face and it scared her. She wasn't usually one that was lost for words.
Realizing she was taking too long to answer such a simple question, Macie finally made up her mind and replied with a simple 'on my way' and decided that she'd just hope Wally wasn't coming. Even if he did, Stevie would be there and Macie wouldn't be alone.
She pushed back into the sea of students and made her way to her locker. After sticking her stuff in there (carrying a backpack and three books through a sea of freshman was not fun), she headed down to the club fair.
There was chaos as she entered. Freshmen all wandering around. Desperate club leaders trying to get more members. She even spotted Wesley at the table for the football team, his scrawny body almost appearing smaller than some of the freshmen as he began shoving pamphlets at a boy that had slowed down to ask about tryouts. She pushed through the chaos and lit up when she saw Stevie sitting at the booth for their club. Then her eyes landed on Wally and she seemed to shut down for a moment. She couldn't turn back after she'd already told Stevie she'd be there, so she just walked past Wally and busied herself with straightening some papers.
A sickening feeling grew in her stomach as she thought about their breakup again, but she just tried to push it back. Just because Wally was here didn't mean she had to talk to him. Still, she noticed his hand from the corner of her eye and remembered how it had felt wrapped around her hand. She stiffened slightly, but still didn't acknowledge her ex as she looked out over the crowd.

S T E V I E
The Ruler
Stevie had just finished talking to a freshman group when she spotted Wally entering the gym. Tucking extra fliers under her arm, the club leader bit her lip. She liked Wally, he was an okay guy and a great member of the club. But he'd also been Macie's boyfriend until he unexpectedly dumped her. She'd spent hours talking with Mace about the breakup, but she'd never heard Wally's side of things. Part of her worried that she'd be betraying her friend by talking to him. Still, she forced a smile across her face as he approached.
"Well I'm glad you like it," she replied waving her hand in the air. "It definitely wasn't thrown together last minute or anything." She let herself laugh a little. After all, it was her duty as a club leader to make each member feel welcome. Plus, truthfully she never believed Macie had told the whole story. There had to be at least some reason for him to end it. "We've had a couple of freshman pass by, but I don't know." She wrinkled her nose, continuing, "It's kinda hard to tell who's actually interested in the club, and who's just trying to see how crazy we are." She shrugged, "We might get one or two new bloods this year, but probably no more."
"So what's new with..." her voice trailed off as her phone buzzed in her back pocket. "One moment," she squeaked, grabbing it as fast as she could. "on my way."
Shit. Shit. Shit. This is not going to go well. Running a hand through her hair, the junior forced herself not to panic. "Sorry," she said with a faint laugh. "So what's up with you? How was summer?" She swallowed, wishing she was better at hiding her emotions.
Naturally, it was at that moment Macie walked through the door. Stevie didn't know why she had just assumed that if she stayed calm, her friend wouldn't show up. She winced as the other girl walked straight past her ex and started fiddling with papers.
"Hey Mace," she called over he shoulder. "I'm surprised you came." Only Stevie would try to make a situation less awkward by talking more. "Are you working a shift tonight?"
Sometimes she really hated herself. She really just couldn't shut up. She couldn't leave the exs to be awkward and silent, they had to be awkward and trying to have a rationale conversation. She gave herself a mental facepalm. This whole thing had been a lot easier when she wasn't student leader. She could've just spent all her time with Macie and ignore Wally. She could've ignored the entire drama for all she cared. But no. Of course her one friend had to break up with her boyfriend who was also in the club. Jesus, she thought to herself. It's like no one thought about how these things would affect me. She rolled her eyes, which was probably confusing to the two other parties, but forced herself to keep quiet. Surely she'd given them enough to bicker about.
Still, she couldn't help but wish to be anywhere but a crowded gym for this confrontation. Maybe if they get into a fight it'll attract new joiners. part of her thought. The other was still praying to whatever god existed that things would settle easily and they'd all be free to continue on throughout the day peacefully. She wasn't sure which part was more crazy.

Stevie was like the only person that Macie would talk to about the breakup. Maybe it wasn't fair to the other junior. After all, she was the club leader and couldn't exactly exclude Wally simply because Macie and Wally didn't get along at the moment. At the same time, it had felt right to talk to her. She knew Wally more than anyone else Macie was close to.
Maybe Macie had just been hoping that Stevie would come up with some explanation as to why Wally had dumped her out of nowhere.
Maybe that was what had bothered her the most. Not that it was so sudden. Well, that had sucked, but maybe that wasn't the main reason. Maybe it was simply because she had thought everything was going good. She had thought Wally was falling for her as much as she was falling for him. Maybe it was simply because something had been going right for once and it had been taken away without an explanation. He didn't tell her that it was because he was too busy for a girlfriend or because she was too clingy. He didn't lie or even give a vague excuse. No, it had just been a 'we're through', an 'it's over'. Any typical breakup line.
Just no explanation.
So, Macie, of course, had overthought it. She had tried to come up with any little reason he would break up with her. Most of them just made her feel worse about herself and the whole situation in general.
That's why she'd been so full of dread when she saw Wally's familiar face at their stand. Still, she had her chin held high when she walked past him. She wasn't going to mope around and look like a heartbroken idiot around him. She didn't want him to see how much he'd hurt her with that.
But she liked Stevie. She'd talk to Stevie.
She looked up when Stevie spoke to her, careful to avoid looking at Wally. She didn't know how she'd react when she actually had to confront her ex. Angry? Cold, but polite? Hurt? She didn't want to find out And focused solely on Stevie. "Of course I'd come to support you," she said to her friend.
Just like Stevie had supported her through the breakup.
"I am working," she said, continuing to shuffle the stack of papers. They looked perfectly fine, but she needed something to occupy her hands and mind with. It was also her first shift since the breakup. She'd only been scheduled for one other shift and she had called in sick because she'd been a mess. Tonight she had no reason to call in, even if she didn't want to go. People there knew about Wally. She didn't know what would be worse - getting the sympathetic apologies or having to tell people he dumped her. She had no idea how much her coworkers knew.
"Are you?" Her shifts were always better when Stevie was there. Almost high school job was dreadful, but having a friend made it much more tolerable.
Her eyes flicked towards Wally for a moment, but there was no change in her expression or words for him. Instead, she looked back towards Stevie. This club fair would be a whole lot harder to get through with Wally there, but she had to do it. She couldn't leave simply because her ex was there. That would just look bad.
Her mind was racing as she tried to figure out how to play this situation, but she was talking a lot less than usual. If this had been only two weeks ago, she'd be laughing at this point. She'd be sharing funny stories with her arm around Wally and just... being happy. But now she could feel the tension in the booth. She felt bad for shoving Stevie in the middle of this, but she wasn't ready to face Wally on her own.

oh god, here comes Macie
"It definitely wasn't thrown together last minute or anything."
He laughed at Stevie's joke, nodding along, "Yeah, I know how that feels. I'm not ready to be back here, school's just started and I'm already behind on homework." As Stevie explained that there were no newcomers yet, Wally picked up on of the fliers himself and turned it over, reading and listening. "Meh, they don't know what they're missing. Sure, Chess Club looks more prestigious on a college application, but think of the toll it would take on your soul, as compared to our super cool and hip and trendy club."
As Stevie checked her phone, Wally glanced to the side, really just on the look out for Macie. She would probably be here, of course, but he would at least like a warning instead of her sneaking up on him. "Summer was good!" He snapped back to reality when Stevie spoke, "Always is. I'm sorry to see it go, honestly. I'm too young and innocent to be going back to High School, I need at least another month off." All things considered, this wasn't going so bad. He honestly hadn't been sure as to how Stevie would react to his presence and, as per usual, he had been guarded and ready for the worst. He had nearly a whole foot on her height-wise, but Wally was a lover, not a fighter. If worst came to absolute worst, his go-to plan had been to run and hide out in the Baseball Stall and let his captain defend him from the wrath of the Cryptid Club.
And of course, right around now when things are going good, things started to go not-so-good. At least Stevie was good enough to warn him as Macie came up behind him and approached the stall. He stiffened a little, but forced himself to relax. Macie wasn't going to stab him in the neck with a Stanley knife, after all. No, the little voice inside his head told him, that's the job for her three big brothers, you dumbass. How do you speak to the girl you dumped? Like you normally do? But what if this makes her confused because she doesn't know why you're acting like everything is normal? Do you act rude or distant? That just sounds like something a jerk would do, and Wally was really trying to not be a jerk. But if he acted too polite, then she might-
OK, he was overthinking this and it wasn't helping anyone.
He tried to politely listen to their awkward conversation, totally ignoring the huge elephant in the room, absentmindedly playing with his hands. He looked at the ceiling, at the floor, at the leaflets, at the chairs behind the stall, pretty much everywhere except at Macie. Eventually, as he was flicking his eyes behind the tablecloth and Stevie's hands, he caught Macie's eyes as she too looked up at him briefly. She looked nice, but he knew saying this would only add oil to the fire. Instead, he flashed a quick, awkward, smile at her on instinct and immediately hated himself for doing so.
In an attempt to seem as nonthreatening and as normal as possible, he awkwardly tried to join the conversation, "Is the dinner still busy around this time of year..?" He'd been in there a lot the last couple of months, either walking Macie to her shift or picking her up afterwards, though truth be told, he didn't eat there much. His mother didn't like food that was, what she so lovingly called, 'too American' and struggled with salty or sweet meals, so they mainly ate at home, or at a very selective couple of restaurants. Maybe it was for the best that the dinner wasn't a local eating spot for him, because he may have just chased himself out of it by dumping one of the waitresses.
