S T E V I E
The Ruler
Stevie watched in awkward silence as both boys scanned her flyer. She hoped it was clear enough. It was a stupid thing to stress about, but if there was one thing she was self-conscious about, it was her artwork. She’d spent ages on some stupid website, until she was satisfied with the design. She wanted to jump up and down, when the first boy didn’t question anything. She was so excited, she’d almost missed his response. Almost.
“Yeah, they are,” she replied, perhaps a little deflated. She wasn’t sure what she’d been expecting. Maybe she had tricked herself into thinking that someone really awesome would show up to their booth, like someone who’d seen a cryptid in person. That would’ve been rad, she thought wide-eyed. Too bad most people don’t encounter monsters on a daily basis.
She was drawn out of her thoughts as the boy-James she learned, continued. “Well, it’s nice to meet you James, I’m sure you’ll love it here at Firesbrooke.” She paused, trying to remove the bitter taste in her mouth. Since when did she sound so preppy? “The small-town thing is a bit jarring to adjust to, but we’re a pretty chill people.”
She let the other boy join in, listening as intently as she could. “Yeah, we’re a pretty small group- not a lot of people like believing in cryptids I guess.” She waved her hand dramatically, hoping her sarcasm would be picked up. “And yeah, Stevie Hackett,” she answered, hammering his name- Lucien, into her head. God she had forgotten how stressful names could be. “Kinda strange that you’re both new here,” she spoke, addressing no one in particular. “It’s nice to see that people are still coming into town, it means the community won’t like, die out or anything.” She couldn’t help but laugh at Asa’s excitement over a skeleton- or Lucien’s reply. “Come on Asa, do you know how common it is to find human remains in the woods?” She made sure she made eye contact, and rolled her eyes at him. “Like it’s the number one body dumping grounds for murderers.”
She felt someone brush past her, and looked up to see Macie leaving. She gave a half-hearted wave at her departure, a frown crossing her lips. Stevie figured that the other girl was still a bit weirded out by Wally, and regardless, probably wanted a couple hours to herself before her shift. Still, she was sad to she her go.
“But monster remains would be cool,” she continued, giving her head a slight shake. “Although it would be hard to identify them without proper genetic testing,” she added, a smile once again returning to her lips.
“So where are you guys staying?” She asked, once again returning her attention to James and Lucien. “I wasn’t raised here either, so maybe I can help you out if you need to know where stuff is?” She hoped she wouldn’t offend the boys with this question. She knew some people could be very prideful when it came to accepting help. Hell, she’d been one of those people in the beginning, though the two years of never actually knowing where shit was had quickly vanquished that attitude.
(Just a little update since . is going on a brief hiatus due to personal issues. We're just going to say that Macie left, probably because of Wally. )

Asa Cohen "we are the dreamers of dreams."
Okay, so the skeleton suggestion didn't get such a great response, but he found amusement in it nonetheless. A murder case. He liked the sound of that. Mysteries were mysteries, ultimately! He rocked back on his heels and maintained his lazy grin, moved from Wally to sit cross-legged on the floor and tilted his head back, studying the two newcomers through narrowed eyes.
"I do know how common it is, but like, listen," he rested his elbows on his thighs, leaning forward by doing so. "Imagine being the first to discover a body, and like...it has gashes. In its bones. And like, it's clearly a monster attack - like a...a..." for a moment, Asa paused as his brain tried to derail his thought process. Not today. "Like a werewolf. Because then, then, then I'll know that there are werewolves, and then I'll know that all I gotta do to become a werewolf is to go out on a full moon. Which I do anyway but like, it'll make it more hopeful."
He was rambling now, and he knew it - so he zipped it, the muscle in his jaw noticeably tightening as he restrained himself from saying anything else.
Asa's gaze flicked between James and Lucien, before he twisted his torso to look up at Stevie. If he cared that he was on the floor and thus far down from anyone else, he didn't show it. It was his token raised eyebrow and the mischievous expression that remained on his face, nothing more and nothing less. His gaze briefly trailed after Macie as she left, and while curiosity was a flaw that could not be beaten nor stolen from him, he didn't ask any questions. Instead, he looked to the newcomer duo again.
"I'm Asa, by the way. Stevie can't introduce me because, like a strong, independent man, I have to introduce myself. It's a cold, uncaring world out there," he put a hand over his chest and tilted his head, "you should definitely join us to look for skeletons. Like, no offense, but I'm the best to hang out with and the only way you can hang out with me is by hanging out with the Cryptid Club. That's why you see so many people flocking. But alas, I'm an exclusive."
Again with the rambling, he thought to himself. His mouth had a mind of its own. Whether it was a nervous habit or just how he was had yet to be seen, because he was very good at hiding the more negative sides to him. Asa's mind was a complex place, and with such a positive expression lingering on his face at all times, he was kind of a closed book. Open in theory, closed in reality. Like a book with teeth. He liked the thought of that. It would go on a list of "things to make". Maybe it could be mechanical. And bite teachers.
Damn, his brain really didn't want to focus on the people in front of him today, huh?
Asa wasn't a scatter-brain, as such. He just had a lot of things going on in his mind. Almost too many things. It was like putting a dog in a room filled with its favourite treats, but also there was fire. Like, a lot of fire, presumably between the treats.
Look - the point was, Asa was not good at focusing, and he wouldn't even pretend that he was.

James - “The Rebel” James smiled slightly as he shook Stevie's hand firmly. The physical interaction seemed strange - it had been so long - and he couldn't help but subconsciously hope that his hands weren't cold. As Lucien spoke James raised his brows slightly. He was half-surprised, half-relieved that he wasn’t the only new kid to wander aimlessly through Hell High's hallways. The conversation around him shifted slightly, and an air of assurance seemed to swirl around him. Lucien's own words echoed his thoughts - he felt more comfortable in smaller groups. As Macie left James felt his eyes drawn over to her. She seemed uncomfortable, and James had noticed an unspoken tension between her and someone else before he had come over to the booth. He looked back to Stevie so as to not appear nosy. James tensed impulsively at her next words, “So where are you guys staying?” The sentence echoed throughout his head and brought him back to conversation. How had they gotten to that? It seemed out of the blue and invasive even. The flyer in his hands bent slightly as his grip tightened. No, he reminded himself. You're simply a new kid in a small town, calm down. He narrowly missed her next words before responding. “My dad and I, we have a trailer home out by-” James stumbled slightly, “near the edge of the woods.” He decided not to elaborate, even though he realized that literally the entire town was surrounded by forest. He didn’t want to talk about anything revolving around his dad, and he hoped that he didn't seem visibly uncomfortable. “And thanks, I'll remember to ask you for any… directional advice.” After James finished his composure returned and he tore his gaze away to look at Asa- thankful for the change of subject. James forced himself to listen to Asa while negative thoughts pierced his focus. Thoughts about his father… The more Asa spoke, the more convinced James was that these people actually believed in cryptids. It didn’t bother him much, but the idea of these myths actually existing seemed… far-fetched, to say the least. James was more interested in the murder-mystery aspect of the club - if they even do that. Small towns always intrigued James. Because everyone knew everyone, the chance of you knowing the victim and murderer was high. News would spread like wildfire and rumors plagued the schools. Out of all of the towns James had inhabited, Firesbrooke seemed the most likely place for this to happen. His mind wandered as he began to think more about a rumor that he had heard in hushed whispers throughout the halls. Haunted. That was the word that the students used- some jokingly, most dead serious. There was certainly a lot to uncover here at Hell High. Perhaps that was what brought James over to the Cryptid Club in the first place. Whatever it was, James was sure he wanted to join. He flipped the flyer over, looking for a price but not finding one. “I’m Asa, by the way,” Those words snapped James back into the conversation. He listened intently at Asa’s next words. “Skeleton hunting, sounds fun,” James said, not quite understanding why he was embracing their… beliefs. “What’s the second semester, monster hunting?” He asked, chuckling slightly at the thought. “Sooo, would you kill a cryptid if you found one?” If they even exist.
[ yay to being back home and on my chromebook! ]
