"Here be monsters..."
Lucien navigated the halls of the school, a weary look on his face. Beeep. Students streamlined around him, clearing a path for him. No one seemed to want to come near him. He scrunched his nose at them, ran his fingers through his hair, and focused on getting to his next class. Beeep. There was the class bell, he didn't want to be late. Everyone noticed the late kid. Beeep. No one wanted to come near him, apparently, but they sure seemed to like to stare, Lucien noticed. Transitioning from weary to unnerved, Lucien looked down at his shirt. Had he dropped breakfast on himself? He couldn't remember eating breakfast. Beeep.
Lucien was snatched from his thoughts when the students closed in on him, gliding across the floor towards him, surrounding him, smothering him, shoving him to the ground. He tried to push at the bodies, but his hands went through them, and their essence clogged his lungs. Beeep. His hands found purchase on something, Lucien thanked lady luck for that. He heaved himself up, gasping for breath.
Beeep. Lucien shot up from his pillow, feeling like he was coming out of a haze as he blinked sleep from his eyes. Relief flooded his chest, the school scene had been nothing more than a dream. As his senses sharpened, he admittedly felt a little stupid for being so scared. It was just a dream. They were always just dreams, but it always took him some time to snap back to reality. Beeep.
Right. His alarm. The obstreperous machine wailed at him from his bedside table, flashing the time in red numbers. Lucien swung an arm at it, nearly clearing off the whole surface, but pulled up short when he saw the time. [ #:## ]. Crap. Crap. Lucien was late, and the realization hit him like a slap across the face. He shot out of his bed as if the bed were filled with hot coals, pulling a sweatshirt over his head. Glancing in the mirror hanging on the back of his closet door, he tugged a comb through his wavy hair. At least, he tried to. The teeth caught in his hair, which must have knotted itself while he was tossing and turning in his bed. The odd-eyed boy in the mirror frowned at him, Lucien gave the teen a glare of his own. Cheeky. He thought to himself, before feeling foolish once again for fighting with himself again.
As Lucien practically fell down ladder connecting his loft level to the main level, he promised himself he'd go to bed earlier next time. He knew it wouldn't help, but at this point he wasn't sure what to do. Pretending he still wasn't going to bed early enough made him feel a little less out of control, silly as it was. See, the problem didn't lie within Lucien's ability to fall asleep, he could fall asleep even while a roof was collapsing on him. It was the fact that when he fell asleep, Lucien's dreams chased him through the night, giving him a restless, light sleep, comparable to the unpleasant skin over hot milk. Sometimes the monsters in his head outsold the monsters in his homes, which was a truth Lucien had come to accept. That night, Lucien would stay up as long as possible, until his eyelids dropped and his mind darkened.
Swinging himself around the pole of the banister into the kitchen, Lucien called a through the wall to his (probably) sleeping guardians. "Harper, Via, I'm running late! I'm taking the Harley!" Going over to the fridge, he pulled a prewritten sick note off a magnet-held paper pad- Harper, like Lucien, wouldn't wake with the sun if she had any say in it. He shoved his feet into a pair of boots, grabbed an apple off the kitchen table, and slung his bag onto his back before scrambling down the stairs into In Bloom. After making sure everything was locked up proper, he jogged out to the bike eating the apple in what could be a world record time. The apple was tossed into the composter from the bike, knocking the lid shut as it hit the back of the bin. If anything, Lucien had good aim. He jammed a black helmet onto his head, and within seconds he'd coasted out of the driveway and was riding the streets to his school.
Lucien enjoyed very few pleasures more than riding his bike. The ride was always (mostly) smooth, and the wind pricked at his skin in a way that made him alive and breathless. He'd never have ridden a bike if his guardians had two cars, but they only had a jeep that was used to cart the two around. Lucien hadn't known how liberating it would feel, despite it being dangerous. When he pulled up to the school, he parked his bike in the student lot and jogged through the doors, trying to smooth his helmet hair. The flush on his face would make him a plausible student for illness, he thought, as he checked in at the office and dropped off his note. He felt a relief when the attendance lady didn't call him on sleeping late. He knew they probably wouldn't, but still, one less obstacle to tackle this morning. He made a mental note to learn her name as he pushed through the double doors into the main school area.
Classes flew by, and Lucien sat through them absent-mindedly, drawing doodles on his pages all the while. Faces, swords, monsters, Lucien had the ability to draw pretty much whatever came into his mind. Drawing was his escape, and had been ever since he was little. Whole worlds could spawn from his pencil, and Lucien was content to ignore the teachers talking about syllabuses in favor of drawing a forest spirit with empty eyes and an ethereal energy. The bell signal for seventh period chimed, and Lucien vaguely remembered Harper telling him to go to the club fair today. Something about branching out and making friends with common interest or whatever. As he navigated the crowded halls, occasionally his nose wrinkling or his face grimacing just the slightest when people made hard contact, he tried to find his way to the gymnasium by the signs on the walls. He tried not to be too conspicuous about it, he was a junior for pete's sake, most would expect him to have a clue as to what he was doing. However, most of the summer Lucien had spent within the walls of In Bloom, and the floors above it. He hadn't bothered to make friends, it hadn't occurred to him that they would be a good asset to have in a new school. Now he was wishing he'd made an attempt to hold small talk with the girl in front of him in the line for coffee, or the guy buying a textbook from the bookstore. He tried to blow the should've from his mind, there was nothing he could do now. Besides, he hated small talk with strangers. Something about it felt forced, and superficial, but then again, Lucien was no stranger to social pleasantries to maintain an image.
The gym was crowded, and Lucien hated crowds. They had a way of smothering him, and the constant sudden contact with others freaked him out. He hadn't grown up with positive physicality, so he often shied from touch. His senses became overloaded all too often, and then it became even harder to let his face rise into the practiced grin, and easier to allow himself to drop his guard in order to smooth the wrinkles in his mind. He decided to go to the booth with the smallest crowd, hoping to find some kind of rest from the large crowd. He found it in the form of a table titled the Cryptid Club. The people at the table were engaged in a conversation, but seemed to be feeling some sort of awkwardness. Lucien began to rethink going to this booth, worried he would be an unwelcome interruption, or he wouldn't be able to join the dynamic smoothly. People were always harder to mirror when they were uncomfortable, as they didn't always show themselves clearly, whether fearing judgement or not wanting to give something away. It seemed he was too late to abort his mission, he'd already made it clear he was in their specific direction, and if one of them noticed he was headed their way, it'd look strange to veer off suddenly. For the slightest moment, his eyes flashed with panic, but as quick as it had come, the look was gone, and replaced with a slightly disinterested look. This he'd managed to perfect, to not look desperate, but also to not look demeaning to those he encountered. One would often settle with reading him as indifferent, but not rudely so.
For the moment, Lucien busied himself with finding something on the table that could help him glide into the conversation, or at least give him a smooth entrance. His eyes settled on the flyers, and he let his mouth quirk up just the slightest. Almost too easy. As he neared the table, he paused, taking the table in through the people standing between Lucien and the Cryptid Club. "Excuse me, but could one of you pass me a flyer?"

[ thanks for that but I'm honestly okay with just making sure that it's formatted well by actually using my chromebook. It's just really hard right now b/c my school blocks this website and the only laptop/computer I have is a school issued one ;~;. Anyway I'm able to bypass it but it makes my chromebook pretty slow. This is just motivating me to learn some code! ]

[ I don't like writing near as much as I do reading xc. This is my first true literate-based roleplay so I struggled a lot writing James's intro. I remember transferring his intro into docs last night thinking that it was enough words only to find out it was 230(I never write that much). Anyway though I'm really hoping to advance myself as a writer so if anyone has critiques they would be greatly appreciated!
And yeah Monday works for me! ]
