[[ I decided to experiment a bit and write a little prologue or preview to a story I'm very tempted to write. It's inspired by true events, and experience. I wanted to see what people may think before I post it The working title of the story would be 'Seeking Divinity' and feature a feline cast, including the main character known as Faven. ]]
There must be more. This cannot be all that life is, or is meant to be. They promised more. And I am going to find it.
Chilled mist swirled around my forepaws, a thick blanket of fog hovering above the flat ground before me. The world around me was dark, no source of light seemed to shine anywhere. Except I could see. Almost as if my eyes were producing their own light. Not that it did me any good. There wasn’t really much to see here, wherever I was. Even the smells seemed to be muted. I could smell the heavy dampness of the air and the oddly dry soil giving beneath my toes, but nothing else. Nothing. My ears pricked as I heard sudden faint whispers. They must have been far away, or were speaking pure gibberish. Perhaps a tongue I had not heard before. It was much too quiet to understand, but they seemed to be growing louder. Closer? I couldn’t be sure. Tentatively, I decided to take a step forward. The ground seemed solid beneath my feet, despite the soil being unnaturally soft and pliable. Almost as if I was walking in a dried up riverbed. It felt strange, but not unpleasant. So I kept walking. The voices didn’t seem to grow louder the more I walked, but there was something else. Something odd. I couldn’t quite put it into words, but it felt as if the world was changing before me. The light. A light had suddenly begun to shine in the distance. Faint, but there. I began walking faster. Then I ran. The light seemed to grow. Yes! Yes! A way out! I hadn’t even put thought into where I was or where this light led to, or where it even came from. I was too wrapped up in escaping. Surely, this would lead to somewhere. Anywhere other than this dark place. As my body quickly sped towards the mysterious glow that was steadily growing, the voices grew louder as well. They roared unintelligible things into my ears. I winced and slowed down, the volume causing pain. I had to keep going. My entire being screamed at me to follow the light. So I listened. I kept towards the light, hours seemed to pass as my legs grew unsteady and my paws sore. The voices had begun rising and falling in waves, they would grow quiet as when they began and then build up into the painful howls once more. Always in a language I could never understand, and part of me felt as if I would never want to know what they were saying. Suddenly, it appeared I had reached the light I had been chasing for so long. It enveloped my vision, stark whiteness invaded my entire line of sight. It was almost painful to stare, but stayed constant even if I blinked. The world seemed to warp around me, and my eyes burst open as I scrambled to a half-sitting position. I gasped in air that I had lost, filling my lungs with relief as I looked frantically around me. My reality slammed into me like an oversized dog. Then I felt my entire body deflate, feeling as if it would sink into itself. My mind suddenly longed for the world it had created while I slept. And I dreaded the inevitable.
