Bloodrose Echo shrugged. "If you stop fearing the river, it would no longer be a raging stream that could drown you. It would be a body of water you share mutual respect with." Sort of. Not really. But still. Listening to Foxpaw, he smiled slightly. "Twolegs eat all kinds of things. They eat ants. Snails. Even roaches. None of those are exactly beautiful, and they're super small, but they taste good." He tilted his head. "It must just like eating cats. Sees them as a treat maybe." An ear twitched. "Or maybe it's something you clan cats brought on yourselves. Don't you have some weird story about the moon or something? Maybe the monster is trying to punish you."

She frowned as she listened, her head tilting. ‘Luna didn’t want to give up a cat every moon because it’s wrong, and Solaris was hurting a lot of cats, and she wanted to stop him.’ Right? She thought she’d got the gist of the story right. She’d never really listened as a kit when her mother and the elders would recite it. She’d been too busy practicing to be a warrior. Pouncing on mossballs had been far more important. ‘I think?’ She nervously added on. ‘And why would he want to punish cats who can barely even remember what actually happened, anyways? It’s an old story, and I’m only twelve moons. It’s not like I’ve done anything wrong to deserve getting eaten.’ Right? I mean, there was that one time she’d knocked Wolfbite over whilst playing, but that hardly constituted as a reason to get eaten by a monster. ‘Besides, everyone is too afraid of him to be not afraid of him.’ She reasoned. Perfectly good reasoning, in her opinion. She wasn’t wrong. ‘So it’s not like they could just sit there and ask nicely.’

BloodroseEcho grit his teeth. They always thought it was about the stupid sacrifices. They never wondered if it could actually be personal. "Maybe. Ask one your old farts to tell you the... story again, and try to look at all angles." He laughed softly at what Foxpaw said after. "Well, tell me when you stop fearing your river. When you stop being too afraid of something you shouldn't be afraid of." Though you should always be wary of a monster. "Ask nicely, perhaps not, but who knows. You're sitting here with someone you know next to nothing about, so it can't be too hard, but what would I know? I'm no different than you."

Foxpaw was silent for a very long time, seemingly lost in thought, the tip of her tail twitching. ‘I’m afraid of the river because I can’t swim, and I’ve nearly drowned twice.’ She slowly began. ‘Why would I be afraid of a monster that I’ve never met, or a stranger who hasn’t moved to do me any harm?’ She turned to look at him, a much wiser look in emerald eyes than before. She tried to recall the story properly, but she just... couldn’t think of any other reason. A slight frown furrowed her brows. ‘And how can I see the story from another angle if it is only told from one side?’ She asked, getting to her paws, nose twitching as she looked around, ensuring they were still alone. BloodroseEcho tilted his head. "You've been raised to hunt animals your entire life. Been taught how to be a killer of rabbits, mice, or whatever else you feel like eating. How do you think that rabbit feels? Maybe the mouse had some babies it needed to tend to? But it seems you don't care, because you were only taught one side of the story, I suppose." He had an amused look again, watching her carefully. "Don't worry. No one's going to find me, unless I want them to." His head then tilted up a little, looking toward the redwood he had just been in. "If you're observant, blood always has two shades to it. Two stories. Pay attention a little more, Foxpaw."

She frowned deeply again. ‘We eat them because we need to or we’ll starve. But that doesn’t make sense, because as I said before, there are things much bigger in here than us.’ She flattened her ears against her head, clearly getting confused and frustrated as she tried to get her head around it. She really, really wanted to just march right up to his cave and holler at him to explain everything. She paused at what he said, curiously looking at him. ‘What do you mean? About nobody finding you unless you want them to? Nobody is THAT good at hiding.’ Smokey Feather

BloodroseEcho purred in amusement. "Just because there are, doesn't mean they have to be eaten. If you all ganged up a badger, you could eat him, but do you try? No, because you do not want to eat badger." When Foxpaw questioned him, he blinked. "Well, how would you know if they're that good? You wouldn't be able to find them!" He laughed to himself. "I know this land better than you, Foxpaw. Plus, I like to think I'm part chameleon. I can hide just about anywhere and not be seen by none other than the sharpest eye. That, and I've found tons of good hidey holes."

‘Badgers are predators.’ She stressfully meowed, her tail low to the ground. ‘And they’re twice our size. One mouse is more than enough for one cat, which is why we eat them. Rabbits can feed two or three cats.’ She was growing frustrated again. What the heck was a chameleon? More words she didn’t understand. But now she was stressed, and trying to remember their fresh kill pile. Did she need to catch any more? After a moments thought, she decided no- she didn’t. They’d caught plenty enough earlier on their patrol. She looked at the Tom, wearing an upset expression, her ears flat to her head and her fluffy tail resting on the ground. Smokey Feather

Cherrysplash couldn't help but giggle at Junipertail's reaction to her news. "Yes really," she purred, puffing her chest with satisfaction. She flickered her tail, thinking about the hunt. "It was difficult to say at least," she retorted with a wrinkle of her nose, thinking about back to it. It was tiresome to catch a rabbit. "Rabbits are fast," she mused, pausing a moment, "I had track it first and then I gave a chase, although I had to be a little smarter than the rabbit," she smiled. Rabbits liked to run in zig-zag lines to avoid predators.

BloodroseEcho scoffed. "You're a predator too, but look at you. Eaten up by something else. If you are hungry, you're to eat, no matter what it is. You won't care if you're hungry enough, so why care now?" He had an almost annoyed expression of his own, but he didn't look overly concerned. "Pardon my... educated philosophy, I suppose. I get around much more than feral cave-dwellers." He snickered softly. "You should try talking to houseca-... kittypets. Rogues, maybe. You've got half-shut eyes right now. Open them up all the way, and you'll see much more."

She tiredly looked at him as he spoke, clearly too upset now to offer up any more argument. ‘I have to go home.’ She mumbled, turning away from him, one ear trained on his position in case he tried anything funny whilst her back was turned. She began to head back in the direction of camp, no longer trotting, trailing her paws slightly. Smokey Feather

BloodroseEcho rolled his eyes. "You clearly don't have to be there anytime soon if you were out here alone in the first place, looking for rabbits you likely won't catch." She'd walked a short distance away, but he was right beside her without making a sound. "Plus, you'd leave me out here all alone? What if I get snatched up by your monster?" His ears perked some. "We should stay together. We can keep each other safe."

Foxpaw jumped a little with surprise, hesitantly looking up at him. He’d done fine on his own so far, and had just been bragging about how well he could hide, but her own moral code stated she shouldn’t be rude and turn down his company. She straightened up slightly. ‘Okay.’ She sighed. She did have some time to kill, so she supposed she could spend a little of it with him. ‘Do you want to go somewhere? Or were you wanting to just walk with me?’

BloodroseEcho shrugged again. "I don't know. I've been lonely for quite some time, so I think just anywhere. So long as we don't go to your camp. I don't like clan cats. Or most of them, anyway." He looked down for a moment. Then, he asked "Why is it so important that you become a... warrior? Aren't you ever curious of what's outside these dusty old trees and dirty mice?"

She curiously looked at him, feeling a little bit bad that he was lonely. She then frowned at his question, and looked away. ‘Because I love my clan and the cats in it.’ She hesitantly said. ‘I do love to explore! But I like to have a home to come back to at the end of the day. Whilst I can still explore, and fight to protect my clan, I will! And when I’m too old to do either, they’ll look after me in turn.’ Smokey Feather

BloodroseEcho blinked once, slowly. "I suppose I should expect nothing different from one of you." Smaller, weaker creatures tended to flock in numbers, and they knew nothing different due to being as such for so long. "Even after all this time." He laughed to himself. "Maybe I should find a new... clan. Though my standards of one are... long dead. Practices long since forgotten, I suppose. I just don't feel like changing myself to match the new ones. Especially for what I've witnessed over the moons."

She turned to look up at him, tilting her head, something akin to sympathy in her eyes. ‘You had a clan?’ She curiously asked, blinking slowly. ‘What were they like? What... practices did you have?’ Smokey Feather

BloodroseEcho flicked an ear. "I did. We've... disbanded though. They're nothing important really. Not anymore. Just what I'd known for my kithood really, up until I was about the age of... what do you call them... senior warriors. Thirty or so moons." He smiled gently. "Our practices are a story for another day, little one. A story to be heard by mature ears, but it is indeed a grand one that lasted even beyond our disbanding." He then straightened up. "Enough of that for now though. How about you tell me what you enjoy about your clan the most?"

She listened intently, before frowning slightly and looking away, tail twitching slowly as she walked. ‘I like it when there’s a new litter of kittens born, because they’re really really tiny, and squirmy and wriggly. And even though I can’t play with them yet, because they’re small, it’s fun because I know I’m going to be able to watch them grow up like the younger warriors got to watch me.’ She paused, thinking again. ‘And I like to spend time with the elders. Especially wolfbite, because he saved my life. Even though they can be boring sometimes and not make sense, they’re gentle and really appreciate my company. The other warriors are normally too busy to give me any time.’ She paused, looking down at her paws. ‘I like my mentor. He’s been really kind and encouraging with me, even when I know I’m being annoying, and he’s never lost faith that I’ll get over my fear of water, even though I haven’t yet.’ Smokey Feather

BloodroseEcho listened quietly, yellow eyes studying Foxpaw with a neutral expression. "Sounds like you come from a clan that prides itself on family. Loyalty, perhaps." After all, blood did not necessarily mean family. "Almost makes me want to see it. Almost." He still couldn't care less in all honesty, but curiosity was curiosity, he supposed. "Maybe you'll get to watch some of your own flesh grow up, though I hear that desire runs thin in this forest."

Foxpaw stuck out her little pink tongue, wrinkling her nose. ‘Noooo. I’m too young to even consider that.’ She replied, sounding very grossed out. She jumped around in front of him, her head tilted. ‘Why’re you in this forest, then? I’ve never seen you around before, but you seem to know a lot.’ Smokey Feather

BloodroseEcho chuckled gently. She just had to wait. When asked why he was there, he shrugged. "I'm not too sure, really. I just find myself gravitating here. Perhaps I like to study the clan cats more than I like to admit." He tilted his head. "You all have the most intriguing lives, I suppose, compared to kittypets and rogues. I watch from my hidey holes. I watch. I listen. I learn. Plus, the prey here is tasty. I like the trout and rabbits." He then looked amused. "You're very curious of someone you've just met."

Linnetpaw grinned at Thunderheart as he shifted on his paws. "It is going to be glorious," he meowed with a small laugh, his gaze flickering up to the tree-tops above them. Maybe he could convince Mudpaw to join him, it would be fun somewhat dangerous family activity. Linnetpaw's smile crept into a playful smirk as his gaze traced his mentor to the river, "Oh really?" he huffed. He padded closer to the water, peering down into the murky depths with a curious flicker in his gaze, "I am not sure if the fish are still willing to be caught," he thought with rueful shrug of his shoulders. He shot his mentor a swift glance before looking back into the water, "I would be a champion for revealing your devious plot," he laughed softly. He wondered what it was going to be like being a warrior, he figured it was same as it was now but Thunderheart wouldn't be with him 24/7 anymore.

‘Well that’s because we’ve just met!’ She replied, blinking up at him. ‘I’d have nothing to ask about if I knew you already. I don’t know you at all!’ She stood again, continuing to walk. ‘I can’t catch fish, because I can’t swim.’ She said, sounding sad. ‘I do like it though. Duskstorm is really really good at catching fish, because they’re fast but he’s faster. He’s good at catching rabbits, too.’ Smokey Feather
