I'm struggling pretty bad with drawing facial hair. It either looks reallllly bad or doesn't blend with the rest of the drawing. I've tried doing it by example of other people's drawings but it turns out bad lmao. I've also tried looking up video and picture tutorials but all I can find are super realistic and I'm trying to draw it with a cartoonish style.
please I can't keep letting my characters in their late 20s+ have the baby face of a 14 year old lmao

Can I see examples of your art and your previous attempts? It's easier to figure out what's up if I can see it. Though I'm not all that great with facial hair myself, I might be able to give you a pointer or two

I actually don't have any recent finished pieces where I've drawn a beard so I sketched up some #1 is supposed to be stubble rather than a full beard. I think my biggest problem (For all of them) is in the style of lines I use to make the line art for it.

Oh I see, well, I think number 1 should be more follicles or just an all encompassing color block [I'll try to get some examples up between classes/after school. Since it's tubble rather than a beard, it shouldn't have such a definitive form imho number two looks a little off in my opinion because it's segmented. Like number three looks pretty decent [save for the fact it doesn't seem to connect up to the hair line?] But two's a little weird because you segmented the left side but u didn't do the same on the other side [which looks better due to lack of segmentation]
I hope that made sense? I'll try to get up images asap, but it might be awhile considering my schedule is from 1 - 7 ^^'

I actually don't have any recent finished pieces where I've drawn a beard so I sketched up some #1 is supposed to be stubble rather than a full beard. I think my biggest problem (For all of them) is in the style of lines I use to make the line art for it. Well I decided to go about this two ways. I drew on your drawing trying to show you how you might do it your way with some advice regarding what you originally were doing. First of all, for full beards or stubble, you'll want it to extend to where it'll connect with the hairline unless it's styled not to. The bottom of the facial hair should be equally fuzzy instead of just cut off. There's usually some hair follicles under the chin as well but usally on more cartoony styles it's okay not to delve into those and simplify it. The facial hair should always wrap around the chin. Segmentation looks really bad in drawing facial hair since the beard itself isn't segmented up and you shouldn't draw the beard extending over the lower lip. Also try to have both sides match up unless it's a really Really bad shave. A method of drawing stubble is demonstrated here. A lot of artists use it by adding a darker color mask over the skin layer and just erasing away the excess. It's pretty neat.
This is how I personally draw facial hair. It's a really quick thing so oof srry for how bad it looks Anyways I draw all the individual hairs and build it up to the different styles of hair I want rather than lining it. But that's a personal pref. As for how I draw stubble, I just stipple a ton of dots in the general shape of how a beard would grow out and then lower the opacity. I hope this helped!
Here's some examples of actual drawings I made utilizing my method if you'd just like to check it out

Oooo, okay! The noise I made when I saw your draw over of my stubble ksjdf I love it. I'll start testing the waters with using the individual lines to build it up rather than sectioning it and breaking it down. 0: Also I really like how the stubble looks in your last drawing. That's like,, exactly what I was trying to do with #1. Thank you for the help !! I have a folder on my computer where I save art tutorials for Easy Access(TM) do you mind if I add those to it?

Anyways, I'm glad you really loved that I drew over your artwork! I was trying very hard to mimic your own style so that maybe you could pursue something that is unique to you since I know a Lot of good artists who don't draw individual lines for facial hair! And yet at the same time there are quite a few who do! Let me try to find a few references for you now that I'm up so that you can see what you're leaning towards! But I'm very glad this was helpful! :D
For example Kooks uses individual lines to suggest the overall form of the facial hair. They're like a lot better than me and I love their work: wehavekookies.tumblr.com/tagged/otho%20umbrous This is a character of theirs that has a beard so I think he showcases the way they do things pretty well!
Firman's who art is to die for has a very distinctive blocked out style, so here they utilize shapes and blocked out figures which is more akin to a stylistic way of drawing facial hair: michaelfirman.tumblr.com/
Audio's commission work which demonstrates shaping out the beard as just a solid block: ayyaudio.tumblr.com/post/175243728217/icon-commission-for-stagz It's a shame they don't have a lot of artwork up so that's the only one on their page :c
Another examples of facial hair drawing the individual lines and [probably lowering that opacity or working lighter o r using a lighter color] by Cyn: cynicalbounce.tumblr.com/post/174389485502/portraits-done-in-the-last-few-months-tiefling
And some more outlined beards Racesolar who just has such a nice style: racesolar.tumblr.com/tagged/commission
Anyways I hope seeing all these various, amazing artists tackle facial hair in various ways helps you discover your own method that works out for you! :D
