Cherrystar and Beaverstreak were discussing the recent rise in twoleg sightings. On the other side of the mountains was a small area filled with them. However it was rare for them to come this deep into the mountains. Despite all this there had been more signs of them being around. "I would like to send some cats to see how far they are coming up the mountain." Cherrystar mused, tail flicking thoughtfully. She turned to her sister and said "Beaverstreak please gather some cats and check it out. As long as they don't get close to Mountains Peak we should be fine."
Rosepatch was nearby and hearing that he slowly got up and walked moved among the branches. It wasn't that he didn't want to go... actually that was exactly why. Today he was feeling particularly lazy and didn't want to go hiking through the forest to see where the twolegs were. Finding a new place by the warriors den he settled back down.
Dewpaw paced around the elders den. He had been listening to Spidervine tell tales from his warrior days, and now that that was over he was bored once again. Sighing he jumped up onto a branch, perhaps something interesting was happening near the warriors and apprentices dens. It had been peaceful so far today.

Redshade padded by the elder's den, not surprised to see an apprentice like Dewpaw there at this time of day. He had been planning to visit his mother, Antsting, but figured she had probably gotten her ear talked off to by Spidervine so he decided against it. He simply greeted Dewpaw with a flick of his tail, acknowledging him, beforeperking his ears as he heard Beaverstreak discussing a patrol regarding the recent twoleg issues

Totally passed out, thanks for waiting!)
Beaverstreak noticed his entrance and waved her tail for him to come over. Once he was in ear shot she said "Care to come with me on a patrol?" she tilted her head as she asked this and waited for a reply. Of course she could just say he was coming, but if he didn't want to who was she to force him. Cherrystar was the leader around here.

"Of course" he stated. He wasn't one to turn down a warrior duty, and felt he needed to get out of the camp anyway. The recent twoleg disturbances had been a source of stress for Cherraclan, yet it wasn't unheard of.

Today felt off to Otterpaw. Not that anything, in particular, had taken place. She'd simply woke up later than she would've liked to. The apprentice emerged from the den and stretched, followed by a yawn she then took a seat just outside the Apprentice's den. Letting herself wake up a little bit before doing much of anything at all.

So I put Beaverstreak as her mentor, is that good with you?)
Beaverstreak nodded and spotted Otterpaw not far off. She walked over and said "Come with us. We are going to patrol the borders." the young apprentice looked like she could use some waking up. Beaverstreak looked around for one or two more cats, not that they needed that many but if they could she'd rather be safe than sorry.

(yeah that's cool.)
Otterpaw sleepily turns to her mentor "m...hm..oh!" the mention of patrol sure woke Otterpaw up fast. "Sure thing!" She stretches once more then stands and lingers around waiting to follow her mentor. While waiting, Otterpaw wonders what they are going to patrol for, if it's not just a regular check-up, that is. For a moment she considers asking Beaverstreak but thinks that's probably a stupid question.

Redshade glanced at Otterpaw. She was clearly half asleep still. With a small huff he turned back to Beaverstreak. "What part of the territory will we patrolling?"

"We'll be going towards the mountains point. Cherrystar wants us to make sure the twolegs aren't getting too close." the area was sacred to the clan and having twolegs get near it was something none of the cats wanted "She said that she only wanted us to look and avoid interaction if at all possible." Beaverstrike padded down a long tangle of roots that led to the forest floor where she started the walk up a well worn path. It was an easy walk and they should be there soon enough.

Redshade nodded and followed the she-cat, all the while keeping his eyes straight ahead. The twoleg incident had been on his mind a lot, and wondering why exactly they were entering deeper into the territory than usual. He had never seen a twoleg hunt a mouse or anything before, so what was it that drew them in? Shaking the thought away, Redshade put his eyes back on the group itself

Otterpaw follows them silently. Beaverstreak had answered her question about why they were going on a patrol so she didn't really have much else to ask or say. Otterpaw thinks about the twolegs and her mind ventures off into the different turnouts this patrol may have. While some are pretty unnerving, she still enjoys a sort of daydreaming up the ideas of what could happen. She's only half focused on where she is actually going, she will probably blame that on the daydreaming or half-awakeness later.

As the got closer to Mountains Point, Beaverstreak stepped off the well beaten path and towards the left. This was the area twolegs had been seen. As they got closer she could pick up on the faint scent they carried with them. Finally arriving at the lower part of the mountain they saw trampled undergrowth and snapped branches, but no twolegs in sight. Beaverstreak sniffed the air again and her tail puffed up slightly. There was the faint scent of dog. Turning to her apprentice she asked "I want you to tell me what you smell. Anything and everything."

(I'm kind of going off the idea Otterpaw's never smelt a dog before so she probably wouldn't know the exact smell.)
Otterpaw takes a moment to recognize Beaverstreak is addressing her. She halts the scenario wandering to sniff the surrounding air. She can only smell the usual things like wood and the tree leaves or the general forest smell at first. Otterpaw knows those probably aren't the scents her mentor is asking for so she tries again and eventually realizes a faint scent. Something different than the typical scents that she is accustomed too. " hm... I smell something different that's for sure. But I can't quite tell you what that is."

"That's what a dog smells like." Beaverstreak informed "Learn the scent well. Humans will often bring them up into the mountain. They are foolish creatures so as long as you don't let them spot you, you should be fine." she looked around the small clearing. "What else can you pick up?" she asked. In the clearing there were items left by the humans. Most important though was how high they had gotten. It seems there were no steps up a large ledge that the cats could scale, but would be hard for the humans.

She nods to beaverstreak. Otterpaw pondered for a moment, taking another sniff of her surrounding air and observing the area. "I can smell the twolegs. Or, atleast the left over scent of their passing here." she spots a few scattered items in the area and then thinks about where the humans could have gone from here. "I see a few things they may have left behind but not much else. They must have gone back the way they came or continued on a different route."

Redshade had never had an apprentice before, so he figured this was at least a good time to listen and observe how Beaverstreak worked with an apprentice like Otterpaw. He had to admit, he was impressed with Beaverstreak's patience with the young she-cat, as well as Otterpaw herself. Otterpaw was picking up on things fast, which could only be a good thing in Redshade's eyes. "Is this the closest the twolegs have gotten?" he finally asked.

Beaverstreak nodded and said "It seems they haven't tried to scale this ledge yet, but I wouldn't put it past them..." she stared at the broken undergrowth for a moment more before she said "Ok, Cherrystar will want to hear of this we should head back." as she spoke there was a rustle of undergrowth farther down the mountain. From the bushes emerged a twoleg closely followed by a large dog. The dog was walking around freely and sniffing the ground. It's tail was wagging.

Otterpaws ears pin backward and she freezes up. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she thinks that the dog won't see her if she's still. Another part of her knows that she should calm down, everyone will most likely make it out alive and safe. After all, Otterpaw is with two trained warriors so she should trust that everything will be okay.

The dog looked up as their scent was carried down to it. It's tail stilled and suddenly it barked, running towards them. Beaverstreak gritted her teeth and turned to the ledge they had climbed down "Climb the ledge." she ordered, looking to the warrior and her apprentice. The dog was dashing towards them, still barking.

Otterpaw couldn't find the will to move. She really couldn't. Something inside her, whether it be fear or instinct wouldn't let her move. She worried for her mentor too, was Beaverstreak going to join them on the climb up the ledge? Would they actually make it out of this? She stood for moments before finally she willed herself to de-tense and move as the dog gained closer. Otterpaw made a dash for the ledge, never taking a second glance. She promised herself she wouldn't until she was safe on the higher ground.

Beaverstreak only moved when her apprentice jumped into action. She clambered up the ledge, stopping to look back for Otterpaw. The dog had started to jump at the wall, snapping at them as they climbed. Beaverstreak snarled at the dog swinging her tail and drawing it's attention. What kind of warrior would she be if her apprentice got injured. The dog claws at the ledge, loosening some dirt and rocks.

As she climbs, Otterpaw slips a few times, but nothing fatal or too troubling. She heaves herself over the ledge and onto the ground. As she catches her breath she peers over the ledge to see if anyone needed help and to make sure the dog hopefully couldn't climb upward.

Beaverstreak kicked some rocks down into the dogs face and the mutt shook it's head, moving back from the ledge. Beaverstreak used this break in attention to scale the rest of the wall and end up on the top. Once all three of them were up shes said "Quickly, let's get out of here."

Otterpaw nods to her mentor and idles for a moment just to make sure her breath is all caught up before starting up a quick half-walking pace. She's trying to shake off the terror she's just faced, even if this was just a small encounter and no-one was injured, the dog was still terrified for her life even after the event.
