Amberwing's ear twitched, and she glanced around, sniffing lightly but only smelling crisp air and wet plants. "I think I heard a bird." She murmured softly to Nettlefang, her tail waving up in the air to quietly get Frostpaw's attention. Prey was hard to find in snow like this, so even a single bird would be a good catch.

"As you all might have realized," Shaleclaw began, trying to remain as stoic as possible despite the sadness pooling in his eyes. "Our beloved leader, Icestar, has passed away." He could still see the traces of sickness in his Clanmates' faces, along with their fear for the future. Swallowing uncomfortably, he was aware that it was his duty now to calm those fears. Shaleclaw suddenly realized that many of these cats had not even been born when Icestar had become leader, and losing him now must feel as if the camp had been destroyed overnight. He raised his voice, forcing it not to shake. "Icestar isn't gone, you know. He's already watching over us from StarClan," Shaleclaw went on. "Once this blizzard passes, Herbwhisker and I will travel to the Star Tree so I can receive my nine lives. In the meantime, we shall hold a vigil for Icestar."

“Neither of you two are any help either, I hope you know.” Crowfeather said, before going quiet at Amberwing’s motion, not wanting to scare away her possible catch. Silently, the tom pulled Snailpaw back up onto his feet by the scruff of his neck.

Snailpaw almost hissed in surprise, but remembered the bird Amberwing heard and let Crowheart pick him back up. He looked at Beetlepaw pointedly, then lifted his muzzle to try and scent for something, ears pricked.

Shaleclaw scrambled down the ledge and made his way to the center of the hollow, where Icestar's body had been placed. He stood at the old leader's head and, staring into the grey sky, wondered if Icestar was looking down at them. "Icestar was a noble leader," he meowed. "Let us give thanks to StarClan for his life. He was deeply devoted to his Clan, and his memory shall never fade from the forest." Shaleclaw bowed his head, his tail trembling.

"Okay." Mothpaw hesitated, as if she forgot how to use her legs for a moment, but the little she-cat stood and walked close to her mentor as they went to the meeting hollow. She stared up at Shaleclaw up on the rock, feeling strange to see another cat beside Icestar, but at the same time she thought he looked good up there. Maybe he was meant to be leader afterall.
"Watch your step, Snailpaw. It's easy to slip in the snow, we've all done it, which is why you should be cautious of you're surroundings in leaf-bare." Finchclaw meowed. His voice was quiet, partly because he was still burdened by the recent death and partly out of respect for his clanmate's current attempted hunt.

Frostpaw looked over at Amberwing and froze, legs wide as she stood on top of the snow. Hearing the bird, she dropped low, stalking through the snow towards the sound, pleased she blended in with the snow so well. It was a male cardinal, bright red against the snow. It couldn't see her, she didn't stick out like him where he was pecking at the base of an evergreen where the snow was thin. Glancing over her shoulder, she realized how far she'd gotten from the others of the group, but turned her attention back to the bird. Moving slowly, she got close enough to leap, pouncing and killing the bird quickly before it could even squawk. The apprentice quietly carried her catch back to the group, eyes sparkling as she dropped the prey. "It was a stupid bird, bright red against the snow."

"Good work, Frostpaw!" Amberwing praised, purring lightly. "It's a good sign to find prey this close to camp." Nettlefang leaned down to give it a sniff herself, then nodded curtly to Frost paw. "Nicely done."

Frostpaw purred to her mentor and went to bury her prey in a safe spot, avoiding the edges of trees. Finding a secure and soft place, she buried the cardinal and returned, white and silver fur brown with mud as she left a couple muddy pawprints behind her.
Silverheart nuzzled her apprentice gently, closing her eyes for a second before she got to her paws tiredly and went to rest next to Icestar's body, pressing her nose against his fur. She mumbled her thanks and praised him for being such a wonderful leader and that she was proud of him.

"Now, let's see if we can find anything else." Amberwing nodded. "Make sure to keep your eyes wide open and listen closely. Scents are hard to find and track in snow, so while you should pay attention to them, your other senses with greatly help while hunting."

Crowheart stepped away from the two apprentices, trying to catch the sight, sound or smell of any nearby prey. The awareness was more so to provide a tip to his apprentice then for his own hunt. His dark pelt gave him quite the disadvantage in leaf-bare, and he was still determined to make up his absense to Beetlepaw. A few tips for hunting before the snow got too rough should be a good start.
