This is just for a prompt/contest thing that Brownie's hosting:D
----------------------------------------------
Five minutes go. Going away. The clock is ticking.
I gaze out of the window with a sigh as we pull to a stop. It's quite a small place, isn't it?
But it's kind of cozy, with the warmth radiating off the yellow sunflowers bobbing in the wind, the grass swaying to the unknown rhythm.
It's Day 205 - a day to be concerned about, but right know I'm feeling anything but ambiguous.
There are only a few words left to be discovered in the scavenger hunt for me to find. I have to find them all today, though.
I twirl my broken cup around my finger, knowing that it can't be much use to me anymore in this condition. A shame, really.
I get out of the car, tipping my hat to the driver before she speeds away.
With me now stranded, I realize that it's no use in procrastinating any longer if I want to win this. Not that I have anything to procrastinate with.
I traipse through the yard, nearly coming to a halt as I spot an empty frame. My fingers itch to pick it up, but I show restraint as I straighten up again, knowing that it's not for me to touch. There's nothing inscribed on it's front side, unfortunately, as far as I can see.
When I finally reach the porch, lightbulbs somewhere above me flicker on, bright colors greeting my eyes.
I frown, puzzled, but push open the door to the small house anyways. I'm greeted by the dark.
A single piece of cake rests on the table across the room, set out.
I'm about to make my way over to the table to investigate, when they all pop out, nearly giving me a heart attack.
"Happy Birthday, Josy!" Everyone choruses in harmony, cheers erupting from everyone right afterwards. Someone whips out a lighter and lights the single candle on the piece of cake.
My cheeks warm, as I blink - wait, it's…it is! I'd completely forgotten.
My eyes fill to the brim with tears, happy tears, as I acknowledge the surprise by covering my mouth with my hand. It's the nicest thing anyone's ever done for my birthday. Ever.
When Evie, my good friend, brings me the single slice of cake, I close my eyes, wishing.
I wish I always have friends this amazing.
I blow out the candle with a graceful puff, wiping the tears from my face. "Thank you so much, everyone. This is the best thing everyone's ever done to celebrate my birthday."
Everyone smiles ear to ear, but I notice Evie's beam especially.
I sidle up to her with a grin. "Hey, Evie," I whisper in her ear, chuckling as she jumps a bit. "Thank you for this, but never lie to me again. I was nervous, and surely we could've put this off until after I'd won all of that money? Not that I'm ungrateful or anything…"
"Josy, silly, all of your opponents, all of your rivals, they're here," she says with a grin somehow wider than mine. "In fact…"
I follow her gaze to the neon birthday banner they'd set up for me, staring at it in confusion for a few seconds. Then it dawns on me, and my eyes widen. "No way," I breathe.
"No one else's realized yet," Evie says softly. "I wouldn't tell you, but I just think that the money would be the best birthday present from me you could get."
The last few words - they were right there in the banner. My name, my name was the third one.
My eyes sting with tears all over again at her words, as I shake my head frantically. "No, Evie, it's you being right here with me, setting this up, and making my birthday the best birthday ever."
I give her a hug, a firm hug. She's such a good friend - I'm hoping I never end up losing her friendship, as it itself is such a gift.
When we pull away, I give her a signature smirk. "But we both know I'm getting that money too."
She laughs, nodding. "We both are well aware of that fact, Jo." She turns towards the mingling audience, clapping her hands. "Is everyone ready for the fine dining?"
Wait, there's more?
A smile spreads across my face, and I shake my head, knowing that she can't just do something. She has to go all out.
I love the quality because I love Evie.
